A tip when going astern and trying to avoid prop walk. Put the helm over first in the direction you want to go then give a big strong burst in astern just 3 or 4 seconds then go into neutral. The boat should start to move astern and when you go into neutral the rudder keeps working as the momentum keeps you going astern but now there is no prop walk because you are in neutral. See how she is backing and give 3 second bursts and into neutral as necessary and she should go in the direction you intend. If that doesn’t work. Get a bow thruster!

I agree with John, your rudder was stalled (which to make matters worse increases prop walk).
Start off with helm centred, get a bit of way on and then gently turn the way you want the stern to go and then the rudder will 'grip'
But you did the right thing, by giving a blast of fwd with the rudder hard the other way to give abit of prop wash to kick the stern round.

Great advice, Guy! This is something we do get a bit stuck with, haven’t really got the hang of how to correct prop wash and end up going the long way around things. Will definitely try this backing out next time.

Hi Guys. Regarding your starter motor there's an inexpensive bit of kit for troubleshooting a cranking test.
Check out to Topdon BT200 analyser. It will also check the starter battery and alternator.
    Good luck, Rob

Getting to know how your boat handles takes time, sometimes a prop kick can work to your advantage. We had a severe prop kick on our last boat as others have said we would put it in reverse on low rev's with a mooring line still attached ready to slip when ready to leave this allows for some momentum in reverse before actually leaving the pontoon or quayside. I cannot go without complimenting Lauren of her culinary delights a wizard in the galley, for your next challenge is to produce similar surfing down the waves in a 2m swell😆. Good to see you out and about sailing downwind is always difficult in light winds polling out the Genoa if you have one is the better option than the main alone, sorry seems like everyone telling you what to do!!

Thanks so much for the comment and great advice! Always happy to hear tips and tricks as we’re learning all the time. Reversing is still something we need to spend some time on!
Ah thanks for the high praise of the cooking😋 Always surprising what can come out of such a small galley!

When going astern some times too much rudder almost causes the steering to stall ,but I don’t know your boat ,but might be worth a try 🤷‍♂️glad it’s not just me 🤣

Thanks for watching and for the helpful comment, we need all the advice we can get😅 Hoping to try a few of these tips next time, but we’re definitely a little nervous reversing, especially out of unfamiliar/new places!
      Fingers crossed for next time😂🙏🏼
