I love the finish quality of a hand forged object. Unlike a piece of perfection popped from a mould, it speaks to the person who made it, the material and the process. It captures time ingenuity and effort.
I find it fascinating how the sound of the metal being hammered changes with the temperature of the material. It seems like the cooler a piece is, the more of a high pitched ring it has when struck. But the hotter it is, it seems like the sound of the strike is a more deadened thud. Especially when you have a fresh heat hammering on the horn of the anvil. Those hotter, deadened thud noises I find so soothing and relaxing. If I was a little kid at a forge, I'd be able to curl up next to something warm and fall asleep to those sounds so easily. This stuff is super cool to watch man thanks for sharing this

I worked for a jeweler in a small tourist town in Ohio in my 20’s. I learned so much and had the opportunity to design and fabricate pieces. To this day it is the only task I have ever done where I could look at the clock while working and realize 3 or 4 hours had disappeared with out my knowledge ❤

To watch craftsmen of many varied disciplines over the internet. Watching over the shoulder of a skilled or master of their trade. If only my grandpa had lived maybe 10 years more. He would have lost his mind seeing the vast and deep volumes of content to gleen insight from, to learn new skills, to perfect a skill one might already be fostering. If only the world could uncork it's butthole a bit, we'd see the beauty in it But those profit margins, I guess, gotta keep being increased, so it seems.
Thank you for your video. I love all the old crafts , I served my apprenticeship as a seamstress and making bobbin lace. Sadly there is no employment requirement for it and that craft is now dying out. My school metal work teacher, back in the day, said I would never be a good black smith because I couldn’t hit gently 😅. I’m a red head so hitting and gentle don’t naturally go hand and hand for me. 😂

Perfect timing on this post! I'm going to a Celtic Festival next weekend, and was thinking about making some triskelion pendants for it. I was wondering; are your tongs wide enough to fit both pieces for the forge weld, or do you have grooves forged into them to keep the rods from slipping?
