Eyes down don't you gaze on others
Pay no mind to hopeful lovers
Promise to be faithful when you go go go go
    Don't be alarmed to discover
Siren's songs can pull you under
Promise to be faithful when you go go go go
On the seas of mass temptation
    Keep your course of moderation
Promise to be faithful when you go go go go
And if you prove a lying coward
Feel the wrath of higher powers
Promise to be faithful when you go go go go
    Fade
    Writhe, crash, peel
I'm feelin it, the feel of it, the wheel can turn, the wick is lit
I feel like something before I feel like nothing
Crawling through the clouds that morph into mouths
Agree to be swallowed, ignore being hollowed out
    Facilitate the power trip
I like to watch you deal with it
    Savor ever little bit
    Of knowledge you obtain
    Don't you hurt me again
Pride feed me pride I'm feending
My mind and my body won't be able to take the pain
You can never ever diss this dick
You can barely even write this shit
    I'd rather you were dead
    More, give it more conejo
Than lying cheating draining my patience away
    Feed it pieces
    Make it sleepy
Eyes down don't you gaze on others
Pay no mind to vicious lovers
    When you go
    I think you're perfect, I'm worth it
Yeah, I deserve to be a servant
    Act so blind to rediscover
Sirens songs can pull you under
    When you go
    I think you're perfect, I'm worth it
Yeah, I deserve to be a servant
    Say I'm worth it
    I'm your person
    So well versed in
    I'll immerse in you
    Filled with regret
    Alone, in the end
    Barely a man
    I ran from every decision
Not about to justify don't sympathize with my meltdown
I don't need a friend I'd rather keep it all to myself now
'Cause it's hard enough to follow up the fees of my self doubt
I had it all in the palm of my hand
Don't have the time to start over again
I had it all in the palm of my hand
Ran out of time now it's over again
Dive through the heart of a demon
Shine a light on my kingdom portrait
Fly straight over the pieces of you
Suck sludge straight through the straw I need you
    Fade
    Fade into the grave

Rediscovering a DGD song you listened to before but didn't fully immerse in is like the music equivalent of finding a twenty in your pocket.

THIS IS LEGIT THEIR BEST ALBUM
Tilian my dude goes fucking off the whole album truly showing what he's capable of conveying he's emotion, strength, and the ridiculous notes he's able to hit throughout.
Jon Fucking Mess was becoming just a screamer that gets parts to scream every now and then while Tilian was stealing the show on the last album which made kinda sad, but on this one I've never head banged so hard when he's parts came in because he just murdered every track he was in and showed why he's a staple in the band.
The instruments are fucking chaotic throughout the whole album. No song feels slow because they always just kick it up notch and you can't stop listening because it just sounds so fucking great.
Honestly they went above and beyond in this album while keeping it that DGD vibe. 10/10

    • @thepanda973
      @thepanda973 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Honestly on songs like Here Comes the Winner Tilian goes harder than ever did in Tides of Man. I can't get over how he does that. Then we have the rest of the band pushing themselves just as hard on this record.

    • @davidpottinger9511
      @davidpottinger9511 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Dude, I thought I was the only person who noticed it. A few songs on IG, Mess was the scream guy reserved for the breakdown in the middle of the song. That got me worried, and mainly disappointed. Thankfully, it's not the case here. ☺️

Love Maker Tillian really came into this album with passion and the intensity of molten magma. I feel like this is the album where he is finally 100% percent comfortable with DGD's style and it just flows, breaks, ebbs, come crashing back like a wave breaking on the shore, and is in perfect connection with what he envisions for the future.

Timothy Dexter Actually, that was a mutual decision between Tilian and their producer Kris Crummett. Before, Kris would have Tilian re-record if there was any grit in his vocals. They decided to let it go here, and boy did it pay off.

@Larry Lee Hansen If i recall correctly John writes his lyrics based on how it sounds when he screams it rather than having meaning.

This is not only my favorite Dance Gavin Dance song, but my favorite song in general. I feel every emotion and brutality this song was meant to portray. Giving your life to someone while being completely exposed and vulnerable. Trusting in them to never betray your trust and to always stay faithful. Or the trust has already been broken and you do your damnedest to try and forgive them. Which is a long road of repair and restoring. Then all of a sudden you feel like you're creating self induced irrational fears which makes the burden of building eachothers trust again all that much more agonizing and difficult. That shit will eat you up inside if the other person isn't actually deserving of the second chance. I speak from experience, if you couldn't tell. The things we will put ourselves through for the one's we love.

For me, this is the best song this band has ever written. I can think of
only one closing track that I like more than this one, and that one's
my favorite song of all, so there's an expression of how much I enjoy

Basically, I'm saying that this song is actual perfection. From calm to

    Amazing.

Just finished the album, so here's a small little rant.
I've noticed a trend of bands in this genre becoming more accessible, especially in recent years. I won't name names, but I've pretty much reached that general consensus. And that trend always disappointed me, because I liked the screams, the speed, the spontaneous, and the moshibility of the genre.
So then Dance Gavin Dance released Instant Gratification, which I DID like, but was sort of disappointed over because I felt they were following that trend, namely in songs like Death of a Strawberry and Legend. Even in songs like We Own The Night, Mess felt more like an accessory than a full member of the band (A chorus the two shared and which Tilian dominated, and then like 5 seconds at the end? On a single?).
At the end of the day, I wasn't highly anticipating this album because of those reasons. And then the album was released.
...What happened? I mean, THIS song is probably one of the slowest songs on the album (And feel free to skip to 1:25 when I say that). This album is the most in-your-face album I've EVER heard from DGD. It doesn't let off ONCE. Pure chaos, a crap ton of double kick and amazing licks. It's everything I've ever loved about DGD in one package.
Mothership might be pretty intimidating to people that liked the more poppier side of DGD, and it probably won't be DGD's most successful album because of that. For me though, it's all I've ever wanted and loved.
This is my favorite DGD album. I've loved every album they've released, and own every album they've released, but this one is easily my favorite. There's not a single song I dislike here. Thanks for releasing this, guys.

whats funny is that there isn't a single DGD song I don't like. A few songs off of WISIRO kind of blend together and sound the same, but I still love every one. They have never disappointed me at all. I wasn't a fan at first of happiness but then I realized the master piece that it was. I also didn't like the production of AS, but that too is an amazing album. Their goal is to release completely different album styles with each release, and they accomplish that every time.

Holy shit this song is powerful.
Take a minute to really pick apart the lyrics here; they paint a really dark picture.
I don't want to write a novel, but this *IS* going to be very, very long because the genius of this piece still blows me away.
This song is about a man that is near death (plagued with sickness and old age, staring down at suicide, whatever your interpretation is) and who has failed- across all fronts. Aside from the clear relationship imagery, the true genius here is that the lyrics tell the different sides of the same story all at the same time. We start in his youth; at this point in time, our man is somebody. Personally, my interpretation is that he is a businessman, happily married, moving up in the world.
However, this quickly changes by the time we get to Mess' verse, and his life changes as quickly as the pace of the song. He has given in to pressure, bought into his own hype, he thinks he can do no wrong. But his nice life starts to fall apart in the dramatic fashion you've all seen before, his world falling out from under him all at once ("Writhe, crash, peel/I feel like something before I feel like nothing"). Before long, his wife catches him cheating and this is the point where there's no recovering ("Crawling through the clouds that morph into mouths"). At this point reading further into things you can also extrapolate that this created problems for him at work too, especially Tillian's lines here- "And if you prove a lying coward/Feel the wrath of higher powers" and "Agree to be swallowed, ignore being hollowed out". Pressure at work. His performance is down, morals decayed and his life now revolves around trying to keep his job that is constantly threatened by his superiors.
Pushed into a corner, he lashes out. A new girlfriend, hurled into emotional abuse (Mess' "Facilitate the power trip" verse- projecting his anger at his situation onto the new woman to try and make her feel as he felt). Once Tillian comes back in we see what is almost a decent into madness and likely escalation into physical abuse as he projects his ex-wife onto the new woman, "Don't you hurt me again/Pride, feed me pride[...]You can never ever diss this dick[...]I'd rather you were dead!" You can also read into these lines a bit more and apply them to his career; anyone who's ever been in a similar situation would know that you can only just scrape by for so long. As he's cut loose from his job, this could be the catalyst that pushes him over the edge in his personal life (Once more, "Don't you hurt me again," losing his job right after he lost his wife). At the end of this verse he realizes the error of his actions, that he had crossed a line best left uncrossed and tries to get himself back on track. Unfortunately this doesn't work, as we see in the intro refrain that follows-
He tries to be trusting, as his ex-wife was (echoed by Tillian in the opening lines), but instead of portraying tenderness, we get intimidation, expressed by the change in the lyrics and tone ("Eyes down don't you gaze on others" changes from a plea to an order). Now the roles are reversed, and predictably, the new woman winds up with another man ("Act so blind to rediscover/Siren songs can pull you under"). Yet another situation most can identify with, desperation sinks in. He NEEDS the validation, either from work ("Yeah, I deserve to be a servant"), or from love ("I think you're perfect, I'm worth it").
After one last ditch effort ("SAY I'M WORTH IT/I'M YOUR PERSON"), and a break in the music that one can assume reflects time passed, we get to the revelation.
The calm before the finale is where he stops denying where his life has gone ("Filled with regret/Alone in the end") and accepts that what happened to him is no one's fault but his own, opting for the easy way out ("Barely a man/I ran from every decision"). The next fast paced verse is the sound of the magnitude of his situation finally setting in. He is old ("Don't have the time to start over again[...]Ran out of time, now it's over"). Past his prime. He has a history of bad choices that at best, will follow him. He is stuck with no career, a dead end job, alone, wasting away, and it is finally hitting him that there is NOTHING that he can do about it.
The anger from years past resurfaces, and is now directed at himself, you can almost hear the anguish in Tillian's final, tortured, 'again'. When Mess joins in, the despair this man feels is really driven home. The last verse is sort of Mess-ey (lol), but what I pull from it is that our guy is looking back at his younger self, this shining young man with the world in front of him, before snapping back to reality and realizing that his life is one big, sick joke before he finally gives up on it and resigns himself to death. Our Man of the Year, the irony echoed in the song title.
I may have just written a book for nothing, but the way that this song was composed really floored me. The music matches with the vibe and the lyrics *flawlessly*, and that fact that you can point the lyrics to so many different things without them losing their weight is astounding and REALLY tells a story.
If I'm correct in my interpretation and this was all intentional, and I'm not just imagining things, this is the finest songwriting I think I've ever seen.

Around a year and a few months ago, my friends introduced me to DGD and this genre of music. It started with Count Bassy and although I was thoroughly confused, I was enjoying listening to them every once in a while. A little over a month passed and I found myself looking forward to listening to the entirety of Artificial Selection when it would come on my playlist which was weird for because I don't necessarily like bands, I like songs from bands. This was the first band I had listened to where I listened to 99% of the songs on an album and enjoyed them. My taste in music reaches from bubbly, to alternative rock, to weird 80's shit, to rap, dubstep, etc, but this BAND quickly became my favorite GENRE of music. It wasn't until right before I saw them live for the first time earlier in 2019 at Warehouse Live in Houston, TX that I listened to Mothership for the first time. I remember listening to every song in a row from start to finish one afternoon while I was doing homework, and Man of the Year came on last and I have to admit, I knew from the first few seconds of Tilian's voice that it was going to be my favorite DGD song. The voices, the build, the Mess, EVERYTHING was perfect. Then, when I got to see them live, not only was I lucky enough to hear them close on Evaporate, but they also played Man of the Year. I had only been to one concert before that (Lorde lol) and I knew that sometimes bands songs can be "not as good" live, but Man of the Year could not have been executed more perfectly. I have been to around 5 more concerts since then of different bands and nothing has lived up to DGD. Glad to say that I immediately bought my tickets for their next performance at Warehouse Live on March 20th and I can't wait.
