Just got it nice and accurate GPS and played 3rounds 40%battery life left. Can't wait until try the launch monitor thanks for helping me to decide on g80.
Good review... I own a G80 and for the value it’s a must... beside the radar features for practicing its worth it alone but as a gps device it’s perfect... gps accuracy is spot on comparing side by side with lasers... another great feature is previewing a course you’ve never played before.... I’ve played virtual rounds the day before going to a new course I’ve never played and it definitely helped the next day not going into a course blind... also cool to use the distance shot measuring as I actually played the round.... highly recommend this device...
.....I'm just catching up on starting to play Golf, and was contemplating the G80 as a device/guide to help my game from zero to okay. Jonathan, I think out of all the reviews this one quite easily is the best in providing an honest review. I too have subscribed to your channel because of this and to learn as much as I can. Cheers. Dan.
Heard rumors that one of the major companies is working on a small GPS position transmitter that fits onto the top of existing flagsticks. They also work on a universal software interface so that the position signal can be picked up by GPS watches, smartphone golf apps and GPS screens on electric trolleys to show the exact pin position on the green. That would be a fantastic feature!
Also, if it can provide reliable gapping numbers, it’s a must buy for the average golfer. If you throw path, aoa and face into the mix you will have a fantastic product
As having traded in my Swing Caddie and Sureshot GPS as I liked the idea of a device with course information and a launch monitor in one. I would have liked the manual to explain the basic radar principles not requiring the club that you are practicing with to be inputted into the G80 like required for the Swing Caddie. After watching Jonathans explanation and comparison I am now satisfied with my purchase and have compared it to the results I logged with my Swing Caddie and find they are in the ball park as I was able to calibrate my Swing Caddie with my favourite golf shops high tech launch monitor. Worth the investment.
Great video Jonathan. Really useful to me as a high handicapper. For my level of golf the differences between G80 and Trackman are irrelevant as this would give me an affordable means of obtaining personal statistics.
Been trying to find some type of launch monitor that doesn't cost another mortgage. I ordered the g80. I dont hold a handicap but usually shoot 10 over par depending on course. I need to nail down my iron yardage. Not expecting it to be the best but its more than I ever had.
I love mine. To be honest I use the gps course mapping and score keeping most. The launch monitor settings is nice when travelling. I use a r-10 more for obvious reason.
Nice review and that product looks great for the price. You didn't call out the main difference, the Garmin said "Purchase me and go home" the Track Man said "She Knows, 22k don't go home" also for a real fair comparison, you need to now go on the course "the Garmin said 80m to go to the hole and the Track Man said "what... I cant do that"
all the pro teachers are gonna be pissed when in a couple of years a garmin does every and more than a trackman for less than $1000, and they're still paying off the $20G trackman loan
My guess is this is a pure calculation of distance based on ball speed and launch angle disregarding spin. That could explain the driver hit where there was a 20 meter difference. If you factor in backspin, that could balloon the shot as it runs out of steam causing it to land at a sharper angle and then the backspin will further slow it down on the ground. If the g80 can't measure spin (I don't think it can since it doesn't seem to report it in any way.) then it was set with a static spin assumption.
Got one, works great as ballspeed is very accurate, as it not measuring spin extra carry wont always be accurate, but who cares for that price ballspeed being accurate is key anyway. Also gps device is best on market too. And got maps of holes etc
Thank you for the video. Could you do another video going into more depth on some of the other features of the G80, like the target games and virtual rounds? Thanks for your time.
Go to James Robinson golf, his video of I built a simulator in my back garden. He shows you more about the target practice and game simulator in his video. Hope this helps
Excellent common sense , unbiased review. The Garmin should never stand up against Trackman just on price ? Your review proves to me it would be an affordable, reasonably accurate option and excellent practice aid , also crushes Trackman as an on course gps 😂 ...... love the swing Jon 😍🏌🏻♂️👌🏻
Great review. This has really pushed me closer to buying one. I’m using Game Golf tags on my clubs to track my on-course distances but fancy some range monitoring and the target practice
@@billmalec You can set them up in the settings. I like that it shows clubhead speed on the industry standard unit, mph. When it comes to distance, most european countries use meters, so I prefer knowing the distance in meters, because all the courses near me are measured in meters
What flightscope product do you mean? There is the mevo, which shows pretty much the same smash as trackman. The main difference comes from the fact, that Trackman measures club speed from the center of mass of the clubhead. Some products like the GCQuad measure club speed from the toe of the club, which is moving faster than the middle part of the clubface (111 mph on GCQuad vs 107 mph on Trackman).
Very helpful. The only reason I would have bought this was for the carry distance. The discrepancy with Trackman is a bit too big. 4m out is a long way on a green.
Great comparison. I like the G80’s value in that it’s a device I can use on the course. Now, should I spend the money on lessons instead of the monitor. 🤷🏼♂️
Could you not use a range finder to determine which of the devices is more accurate, using the assistance of a person marking the ball position down the range?
@@JonathanTaylor63 Thanks for the reply. I noticed a couple of your practice swings were very close to the ball (atleast from our angle) and just wondered if it was picking those up as well.
I would love to see a reviewer hit into a large sandy bunker so the ball plugs on carry distance. Then have someone mark with a flagstick so you can laser scope in to confirm which is more accurate. Provided the scope was calibrated you would get exact numbers. I assume the manufacturers do this on test.
sowgelder i agree, was thinking that myself. Im sure its some kind of algorithm that comes up with the carry distance. Would love to see someone actually measure the exact carry distance and compare it to the trackman numbers.
It looks like the ball gradually gets further away from the G80, not sure what that does. The Trackman also uses a radar and it would not be a surprise if the two devices interfere with each other. Probable a better device to compare against would be an optical system. Still a very nice job of comparing devices.
I carry a cheaper GPS ( Swami) and Arccos App GPS on my old I-phone 6 ( didn't work on my Android) and also a Laser RF device. They all do a separate function with a overlap GPS role with the Arccos and Swami. The problems I have with GPS devices is that some minor golf courses are not supported ( not on the data base) The Swami does not give a image of the course at all and the Arccos can be a Google Earth image in shadow ( hard to see). The Arccos has the ability to move a cursor to measure to trees or hazards like the G80, but it is a shot tracker/ performance recorder too. My point is that one device cannot be relied upon for all courses. You could use the LRF to determine the % error in the G80s distance calculation and add that mentally to each club distance. That said, I will purchase the G80 when/ if the Swami dies.
Great review Jon! Wondering if you have any opinions on the Flight Scope Mevo. I would be really curious to see a comparison between the G80 / SC300 / Mevo
I noticed a big difference with range balls, with inferior distance compared to better balls. In the range, one needs a “range multiplier factor” to make up for the difference... Garmin needs to come up with a software update to provide to user a “range mode” to compensate for the slower ball speed for more accurate reading - or actually the reading is accurate but the practical conversion is not. In this particular range, the yardage is 80% of the real club flight. So fault is in the range balls, not in Garmin, but because of inferior golf balls, the practicality suffers a lot. Back to point below.
I believe the major difference is the product is marketed for the US so the yards are probably going to be more accurate than meters. It consistently rated a 3 m difference on each swing six on one but for the most part a 3 m difference I’d love to see the video done with yards
Do you know if using limited flight range balls over normal balls would make a difference in the readings with the G80? If not would it be possible for a video on it thanks👍🏼
Hey man great review, best so far imo on the G80. I just got mine and was wondering if there's a difference in lenght or speed when using rangeballs? I know some rangeballs here in Sweden go 15% shorter and tend do be softer. Great vid and keep up the good work!
Linus Nykvist I agree. There is a big difference using range balls. Carry and other measurements are 20%-30% lower. The measurement is correct, but doesn’t reflect the truth with range balls compared to better golf balls. Therefore poor range balls ruining the device’s benefits.
Big difference .... 20-50yds dif wedge-driver... take some beat up balls you have left in your bag and hit a couple when your at the range to get a better idea of your actual distance
If it is just a launch monitor that you want, I would take the SC300 for the extra Stats. If you don’t have a laser or gps watch then the G80 can do that as well.
Could the wind have made any difference in the readings. If the track man is using radar wouldn’t pick up distance if wind was in your face or behind you? Where as the g 80 wouldn’t account for weather.
Rob MG I think some of the yardage discrepancies could be down to the fact that trackman calculates spin and launch angle whereas the g80 does not and that of course affects the yardage. Still the g80 has done well for fraction of price
Nice review, thank you. I think some of the yardage discrepancies could be down to fact that trackman calculates spin and launch which obviously affects distance. It seems these launch monitors are best used on a turf mat so you can keep ball position consistent.
The G80 does a lot of the same stuff your watch does while the SC300 is just a launch monitor it gives you better stats(at the moment). I have found the G80 a little more reliable in that it picks up almost every shot but it will also get confused by practice swings more often.
Sven Hallauer I know I’m a bit late but I owned the Approach S60 and now have the g80 and if you have the money go for it it’s great as a rangefinder and a launch monitor I personally love the virtual round as I can practice a course and plot where I want to go and also get ready for a comp or just have fun on the distance game where you have to get as close as possible
Hi Jonathan. Great video. Nice to see a reliable comparison with TM. Could you please confirm if range balls will give lower ball speed and shorter distances? Assume as both TM and G80 use Doppler ball tech, they must, but would appreciate your confirmation please?

All the other Garmin products have perfect colors. This one... Well, let's just say that the screen looks like it's broken. Thats how bad it is. (Truly bad.) It´s a joke! Tm measures “later” than most devices. Flight scope measures earlier a smidge pre impact thus showing a higher club head speed

Would be good if the real distances measured get compared with the tracking results.
while lockdown still on progress, can i use this devise for target 5, 10, 15, 20 until 50 yard in my backyard, TQ
Radar really doesn't work well at low speeds so I would be sceptical about its performance at those distances.
Great video! We just reviewed the SC300 from Voice Caddie on our channel. Love these little launch monitors!
Excellent test and review. I will subscribe.
Welcome aboard!
Could you not use a range finder to determine which of the devices is more accurate, using the assistance of a person marking the ball position down the range?
Was thinking the same. Even measure it out with a long measuring tape is case range finder accuracy is in question.
Was there any feed back about your practice swings before your real swings infront of the device? it can tell the difference?
If I remember rightly it did not pick up my practice swings

Can you change clubs or how does it work? Does it automaticly detect that you use a driver or a wedge ?
If I remember correctly, you can manually change the clubs but the device cannot recognise a change of club.

No I am afraid not.
can it capture the speed of practice swing without hitting a ball?
No
