I strongly dislike the "you need to read X amount of books a year to be a true intelectual" kind of view. I read since I was 5 and the times I enjoyed reading the most were those where I had no pressure and was able to truly enjoy the stories that were being presented to me. Don't get me wrong, reading is amazing and greatly improves your writing, interpretation and thought process, but forcing others into fitting these standandards will probably just make reading feel like a chore.

I completely agree, a better life hack is to learn to love reading, and if you can’t then listen to audiobooks or something while you drive or do other tasks. Sure you won’t be as efficient but it’s better to be some what productive then not productive at all and if you end up liking one o the books you may focus on it of your own volition.

Depends on what interests you. If your like me and are quite picky with topics you might struggle, but I managed to break through that and I read like crazy. Personally Fantasy and Historical Fiction are fascinating to me. I love the magical side of Fantasy but I also like the telling of a story that actually happened from the perspective of a person. Biographies are also good for that.

    • @ymaaw3735
      @ymaaw3735 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Reading what you're interested in makes it hard to recommend a list of specific books for all to read. Once you know your interests, then you can ask for book recommendations per your interests. So, reflect on what you want to know, and then ask people who know something about it what their book recommendations are.

Educating yourself is great, but watching videos or lectures on your phone can be much more rewarding. Most books are outdated information and your phone has newer if you look up the right things. If he insinuates that reading anything, even fiction, will make you a CEO, then he has lost his marbles more than I thought. Also I doubt the 60 books a year CEO thing is real. Now i know that a lot of books are such trash that the fact that someone reads a lot means absolutely nothing. I don't want to shame anyone, i just think that importance of reading is very overestimated in modern world where books don't have any standards anymore. You can't even say it improves your grammar and spelling and vocabulary since language in many of them is so poor.

There are still many good books out there, you just have to take the time and consideration to find ones you like. Also, opinions come into play, for example you obviously adore classic literature, however I would rather be skinned with a potato peeler than read another bloody Shakespeare play, and that’s fine. If someone reads a lot, that means they are able to constantly find literature that they can enjoy and feel a connection with, and, at least in my opinion, that isn’t worthless.

Reading tips from an avid reader for people who REALLY want to read but fall into the procrastination pit and constantly feel demotivated:
1- Don’t pick up books that you think people will think you’re cool for reading, choose things that actually interest you.
2- Don’t plan on reading an entire ass chapter, begin reading, read as much as you don’t feel tired or if you do end up reaching the end of the chapter keep it to read later, helps keep yourself curious about what’ll happen next and prevents burnouts.
3- Understand that you WILL buy books that will make you bored and that you won’t like, so don’t force yourself to end the book, instead donate it or sell it to invest in one you’ll enjoy. If you force yourself to like it you’ll just end up associating reading with unpleasantry.
4- Keep the book you’re reading visible, and take it with you to public spaces.
5- Make a reading playlist. I recommend calm music, here’s my reading and calming Spotify playlist: open.spotify.com/playlist/5sxWqPGpuGihpAYkSeCZW5?si=ULAJuYEDT0a8VqRQTmAybg
    6- Delete Twitter.

"The average CEO does x" mindset is stopping people from becoming CEOs. Besides, reading became a meme at this point, so many idiots just think you need to read a fuckton of books to be an intellectual, while the miss the whole point of it.

"Read less, but better books. It's better to read 1 book that's amazing 10 times than 10 books that's okey 1 time."

If you end up reading 60 books a year then I would question the quality of those books you read.
Lets take Nietszche for example. It takes 5 minute to read a page to understand what he really says and if you mean to tell me that you finished his book in a day or two then you should know that it doesn’t counts as reading if you truly cannot understand what the book actually says.

My man OSHO and Swami Vivekananda both from india was the biggest ever reader of books..
OSHO's speciality in books: "he read 150K Genuine books throughout his life which includes the Religious texts of every religion, All kind of Spritual books, All kind of Philosophies, Novels, Autobiographies and Documentaries."
Vivekananda's specialities: "He also read thousands of books. Sometimes he isolate himself and then read books continuously for straight 3 days without eating food untill he faints.. His Photographic memory, Focus and brain was insanely Sharp that he can read 800 pages of book in few time and can memorize every single line from every single page. There are a lot of incidents happened with people who witnessed this."
(Both Osho and Vivekananda had a Great Recognition on international level and both left deep impact on people! They were also included in the list of biggest philosophers and spritual teachers ever existed..)

English teacher here: it's not the amount of books you read, but the frequency at which you read. 20-30 mins a day keeps your brain active and happy. Do it on your commute, in the car with an audiobook, before you go to bed, with your morning coffee. Just squeeze it in and make it a habit. Don't set a silly goal to be like someone else. Make it fun; not a chore.
He's 100% right about not finishing crap books though. I really hate that I have to force certain books on students for exams etc but it's also hard to please 30 people at once with a good pick that is also age appropriate and also on the government prescribed list of examinable reads!

If those hallowed CEOs that obviously are to be our example read mostly what we expect a CEO to read, this means they don’t read books of high quality. Ya know, 60 self help/economics type of books isn’t the same as one, I don’t know, from Brontë for example.

Always finish wat you started. Even if the book is bad. If you dont finish now finish it later. Also dont just read books. Discuss what you read with someone even if its on an online forum. Self reflection by journal writing your thoughts and opinions on the book.

Problem with reading that many books is that 99% of people would only retain a small fraction of the information in each of the books, you might get the overall concept but not enough to apply the knowledge in your life. Better to pick less books and reread them multiple times in a year so you actually absorb most of the information.
