Mariah's mom was a professional opera singer and a vocal coach who taught her how to sing. Plus her grandma on her Dad's side was a pastor I believe so that's where some of her gospel influences come from.
actually mariah didn’t learn to sing from her mother, they would get together and do vocal exercises but mariah has said that she didn’t stick to it because she had her own style and her mom was more strict since she sang opera. mariah didn’t really grow up with her grandparents so her gospel influences come from her the fact that she grew up listening to gospel, soul and r&b because that’s the music she likes

3. Mariah basically taught herself to do a lot of the crazy things she has done with her voice & her style of singing/vocal delivery.
Her mother taught her basics but she was/is a damn delinquent 😂. She hated learning voice theory...I wish she just listened. It would've helped her down the line.

Your reactions are great. There is so much I want to suggest. Yeah, beyond the natural talent and the fact that her mom was an opera singer and a coach, if you listen to her book her brought a lot of musicians around and so she was around that a lot. Also there was church influence on her father's side, and she really put in work. In the book she talks about how she studied and gives a lot of credit to some really fantastic background singers. You hear a lot of singers say who their singing influences were, she's the only one I've ever heard talk about being influenced by, studying, and giving credit to some of the great background singers of all time. That's why her music is so good, and intricate. If you listen all her backgrounds are so rich and layered, and she often does a lot of them herself. She really has taken the time to know every single aspect of the music.
