It’s crazy how profitable this format of television is. Even now with shows like love is blind and love island, the messier and exaggerated they are, the more popular. Amazing video btw!!

One segment you forgot from the Maury show was “Is it a Man or Woman?”. Where they would have cisgender women, transgender women, & drag queens stand on stage. Then the crowd would guess if they were assigned male or female at birth. Even back then I felt that was a crazy segment.

I remember those segments! Sometimes, the drag queens are better looking as women than the actual women!

these "Trash/Crash TV" shows were either: before or after soap operas (in the afternoons): Morton Downey Jr., Richard Bey; (Phil) Donahue, Oprah (Winfrey), Jenny Jones, Sally Jessy Raphael, the Ricki Lake show, Geraldo (Rivera) (he was trying to find Al Capone's vault), Maury Povich ("A Current Affair"), and Jerry Springer show. Other people who had their own shows: Live with Regis and Kathie Lee (Gifford); the Steve Wilkos show (Jery Springer's security guard guy); Rolonda Watts, Montell Williams, Rosie O' Donnell, and rapper/actor, Queen Latifah. Ricki ! Ricki ! Jerry ! Jerry !

I've been to tapings of both Jerry Springer and Maury lol, so both are my guilty pleasures. And I watched both shows a lot with family, which now that I think back on it, is kind of wild. My family was fairly buttoned up except for when it came to those two things for some reason.
(also commenting bc I'm surprised this channel has fewer than 50k followers - I love this kind of content and hope others find it soon!)

There's fundamentally no difference between 90s trash TV, more recent iterations of reality shows (as you mentioned), and people being fed to Lions for the entertainment of thousands in the Roman Coliseum. With social media, we can now all accuse strangers in real time and verbally ravage them ourselves from the comfort of our own bedrooms, rather than it purely being a spectator sport. Trash TV has always existed in one medium or another, and always will.

My cousin was on Maury several times, it is real with an asterisk. The story is real but they are playing it up for the cameras. You get paid 100 bucks and have an all expenses paid vacation more or less. Flight, hotel, food and getting chauffeured in a limo.
The most messed up part of Maury, the episodes dealing with phobias...they don't need to play up to the cameras.

I’m from NYC. So I went to a taping once when they filmed the show at the Pennsylvania Hotel across from MSG/Penn Station. It was a paternity test show. The guest pointed at me & said “That baby looks like homeboy in the front more than me”. Then Maury came over & asked if I ever been to Idaho. I said “Hell no!!!”.

    • @melissacooper8724

And now there’s a crossover from those shows to new trash. A creature named Angela Deem was skanking it up on Maury’s show several years ago and is now one of the most infamous monsters on TLC’s “90 Day Fiancé” franchise.

I grew up in the 90s with the Jerry Springer show and was somewhat of a fan in the beginning but eventually became sick of it. There were about 2 minutes of the show where you could understand what people were saying and after that just a bunch of screaming, fighting, and throwing chairs. In order to follow a show I have to at least understand what's being said. It disgusted me that so many people loved it and found it entertaining. Maury Povich too. Same thing every day. Almost every episode was a paternity test episode. I needed variety to keep me interested.

The formula got pretty comical and ridiculous. I believe it reached a point where pretending to be sincere became more insincere, thus why these hosts eventually started mailing in their performances too. They’d just light the fuse and watch the bombs go off.

There's a 90s film entitled "Dark Side of the 90s: Trash TV Dirty and Deadly Talk." It shows talk show producers and their pressure and motives to try and get regular American guests on who are entertaining. It's a good film. I wish it were longer, though.

Very good, entertaining, and interesting.

@pamelamays4186 Not only that Muary Provich used to host the tabloid type news magazine called A Current Affair on Fox 5 for years before he went into the talk show arena LOL! Maurys' early days on Daytime tv were more serious in tone and content. He used to dress up in a suit and tie remember that until maybe the early to mid 2000's starting dressing more casuel and switching the ton of his show from Children with tauret syndrome to who's the baby daddy LOL! 📺📼👶🙆

I hate to burst the delicate snowflake bubble, 90s so-called trash TV is better than anything currently airing on television. But really though, do you always have to talk crap about the 90s? Look I get it people constantly bring up the 90s because it was the best decade for music, movies, tv. People weren't constantly out there looking to be offended all the time.
