When David Duke Was Exposed in the 1991 Louisiana Governor’s Debate
Former Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan and far-right politician, David Duke, was once a man on a mission to get elected in Louisiana back in the 1980s and early 90s. Despite harboring a very recent and heinous racist track record, Duke created a surprise frenzy that ended him in the runoff for Louisiana Governor in 1991 facing off against once three-time governor, Edwin Edwards, in a debate that would end Duke's chances of ever winning office. But this also became a defining moment in American history - the moment far right politics went mainstream.

I'm not defending David Duke here, but I don't think everyone who voted for him was a racist. It's possible that many voters didn't know too much about his racist past or they were convinced that he had a genuine change of heart. It also needs to be understood that Edwin Edwards was a crook who would later become a convicted felon. Neither option was great. What this election shows is that this is a 'lesser of two evils' election that has been taken to the extreme.

Not even 33% of the nation went to vote, its a shocking failure of democracy. I've taken to exposing the incongruencies in numbers and asked voters, directly, if they think its a sign of love and respect that some politician runs on a platform of lies, because they consider their voters too stupid to fact check. It wont end. Its the cycle of populism. In the Y2Ks it was Britney, a decade later it was Beyonce and now its Taylor Swift - same shit, whether its selling out stadium tours or taking up seats in congress.
