The black screen where we could only see Meruem's "aura particles" and everything else was dark shows that the Rose's poison has made Meruem go blind. That's why he has to keep asking Komugi if she's still there, because he can't see her anymore (honestly, it broke my heart everytime he asked her that). This is ironic because his name means "the light that illuminates/shines upon all". In addition, as they are playing in the bunker before their deaths, Meruem sees a blinding light radiating from Komugi as she "reverses his reversal", making her "the light that illuminates even the all-powerful light". Despite being far weaker (and ironically blind as well), her light shined far brighter than his. Then, as he dies, Komugi holds him and feels his face, allowing her to finally "see" or know what his face is like. Thus, as they die, Meruem joins Komugi in blindness as she joins him in death. Meruem can finally see what Komugi has been seeing all along, and knows what it feels like to be blind like her, and Komugi finally knows his face, allowing each to understand the other more as they fade away. Even the OST that played during their death scene means "Understanding". Touching, isn't it?
Meruem was set up as an evil omnipotent villain. Where other animes would conclude an arc after defeating the villain in glorious battle, achieving flawless or heroic victory. Hunter x Hunter goes wild with t h i s. A boy who lose his humanity and became a monster, and a monster that regain humanity and became a decent person. What a wild arc.
It's kind of a bleak joke, when Meruem first arrived to the palace and killed "diego" the ants pondered about how the weak can become humanity's leaders, but in reality human power structures are so complex and so ingrained that the truly powerful are never ever in any danger.
These episodes are always a gut punch right to the feels. I also love how they were able to create and defeat an “unstoppable” character like Meruem without having to completely changing the power structure or adding a bunch of random plot. Such a beautiful end to a fantastic arc.

Hello. I just wanted to let you know Boom, on the most auspicious occasion of episode 135, that I’ve greatly enjoyed watching your reactions to hxh! Your appreciation for the underlying metaphors in the work, your understanding of the characters and the care put into the story is really heartwarming to a hunter fan like me. So many shonen reactors are just there for the fight scenes, and can’t grasp the rich and nuanced narrative. I’ll still be watching through the Election arc, but I just wanted to say thank you for putting out these fun and thoughtful reactions. Your series will definitely be on my rewatch list. 👍🏻
Only Hunter X Hunter could make EVERYONE cry their eyes out for an ant 😭 the part that got me the most was when it showed Komugi's face as she said she was going to join him soon because you can see the blood from her nose and corners of her mouth that she was dying as well
I just love how Komugi, this blind woman, who was only good at one thing and someone that had never received any love from other human beings, including her family. Ended up finding love from Meruem, this evil being that was supposed to rule over this world ruthlessly. Togashi made it clear that the true monsters are us....man, i wonder what was he going through when he thought of this story.
i literally just found your channel and im gonna binge all of your HxH reactions. HxH has been my favorite anime since 2004, a couple years later I started reading the manga and Togashi's mind is just wonderful. Here is something I realized and it's just an observation. When seeing Komugi, we're seeing her from Meruem's eye. At first he looks at her with disgust and you can see that by the way she's all boogery and gross looking. Now, at episode 135 when they're playing and she tells him that she wants to join him, you can see how she's drawn differently. She now looks beautiful and you can see it in Meruems face when at that moment and the rest of the time, she's not shown how she was when she was first introduced.
and you know the most tragically sweet part? the way komugi says "good night, meruem. i'll be joining you shortly"? in japan, that's how wives say good night to their husbands. shonen's greatest, most tragic, and most beautiful romance.
