Back when Meruem rationalized brute force being the ultimate power, and all else is beneath him and went on to kill Komugi he finds himself unable to kill her but ironically cares for her wellbeing . This brings the question of what it takes to really understand ourselves? Our rationalization could deceive us of who we really are. It is through playing with Komugi and ascending to greater heights in a board game Meruem finds out what is ultimately important for him, who he really is. The mutual love and respect he shared with Komugi redeemed him even when he faced certain death. Goals of conquering humanity, becoming the ultimate being with supreme powers pales in the face of love. This might sound cheesy but I think it’s beautiful. It reminds me of crime and punishment, where Raskonikov also misunderstood who he really is but is ultimately redeemed by his love for another person.
you mean identity. gon did not lose any humanity. its not like he killed someone who did nothing wrong. come on hxh fans dont just copy paste without thinking
Meruem basically became blind at the end because of the radiation. That's why he kept asking Komugi if she was still there. This scene always make me cry ffs..
Not only blind but all of his senses died so he couldn't see, feel, nor smell Kumugi at that moment. That feeling of fear of being left alone in the dark.
yeah early on he demands to not make him repeat himself or he doesn’t repeat him in general but then you see him asking over and over for her one last time since he was losing all senses. its truly amazing
Meruem went from saying "I will not repeat myself", to repeatedly asking "Komugi, are you still there?" 😔 Fyi the poison was slowly making him go blind as it was killing him.
I’m happy you guys posted this on TH-cam. To me this is the most sad yet beautiful moment in anime lol. I always like to see reactors react to this specific episode.
"4-6-2 spy," though esoteric, has a multi-layered meaning when read in Japanese. It is similar to the nuance of "walking with someone who is destined to die." If one move to find a way out of the seemingly lost situation of "Kokorico" is to "lean in," then this is an intriguing club.
As a Hunter x Hunter fan, I genuinely appreciate your reaction. It’s great to see that you understood and felt the emotional impact. Excellent reaction video!
And that's why HxH Chimera Ant Arc is the best arc in anime. Not just the great character writing, the metaphors, allegory, and overall great writing per episode. No, the author managed to do something nearly impossible. In ~44 episodes takes what everyone expects to be the typical OP anime villain the protagonist will have to overcome and flips the story on its head where they never even fight instead ending with the tragedy of the villain having his life cut short just as he had found his humanity through a soulmate who joins him in death in such a beautiful way that it has everyone crying.
My husband and I watched this scene together right before we had to go to sleep to prepare ourselves for our full time jobs the next day. We both broke down and cried together for quite a while that night. We both struggled to get by the next day. Through his interactions with Komugi, Mereum went through a journey of self-discovery. Although Meruem and Komugi had a unique and complex relationship, I feel as though the connection between them deepened and became a love story that transcended space, time, and status. This kind of love is like no other. ❤️💔😭
9:50 I have heard that "I may not be worthy, but please allow me to join you." that Komugi says before they die, is an old-fashioned way for Japanese women to accept a marriage proposal.
Meruem is just like a newborn who didn't know which good or bad. At the end, we know that if Meruem were likely born and surrounded by good people, he can be good too. Just like him at his final moment. Even tho he hold the nuclear power at that moment, he didn't even choose violent to reach his goals, which is to met Komugi.
Kokoriko is an advanced Gungi technique developed by Komugi that focuses on isolating the King (the Gungi piece, not the Chimera Ant), separating it from the other pieces and killing it, just as Netero and the Hunters were planning to do to Meruem . However, Komugi unexpectedly develops a counterattack technique to this in the middle of a game, which means that the King piece (representing Meruem) would no longer have to die (since it unexpectedly survived the nuclear bomb). Then, later, when Komugi uses Kokoriko again, she develops a "counter attack to the counter attack" ("That move... actually found a way out!"), representing that the King's (Meruem) piece, which apparently, in the end he has to die (because of Rose's poison). However, immediately after beating Meruem using Kokoriko (symbolizing her imminent death), Komugi and Meruem begin one final game together, a game they never end. 1-5-1 Black King -> 9-5-1 White Lieutenant General, I believe, or something along those lines. Immediately afterwards, they die together, leaving Meruem's only black piece and Komugi's only white piece on the board, together in Gungi forever. This represents that the two have always been united through Gungi, and will continue to be together even after death, undisturbed and united for all eternity. Meruem places his piece on the floor, symbolizing her death, and then Komugi responds by placing her piece next to his, showing that she is perfectly willing to die alongside hers... The expression "Maybe I'm not worthy, but allow me to come with you" is an old Japanese idiomatic expression that Japanese women used to accept marriages, but since in their case it wasn't really a marriage, it demonstrates the desire to have a connection intimate when wishing to die holding his hand. The black screen/black panels in the manga show that Rose's poison caused Meruem to go blind. That's why he has to keep asking Komugi if she's still there, because he can't see her anymore. This is ironic because her name means "the light that illuminates/shines upon all". He even obtained some photon powers related to the light of God before her death, allowing him to fulfill the purpose of her name. Additionally, while playing in the bunker before her death, Meruem sees a blinding light radiating from Komugi as she "inverts her inversion", making her "the light that illuminates even the all-powerful light". Despite being much weaker (and blind to life), her light shone much brighter than his. Then, as he dies, Komugi holds him and feels her head, allowing him to finally "see" or know what her face looks like. Thus, when they die, Meruem joins Komugi in blindness, while she joins him in death. Meruem can finally see what Komugi has seen forever, and knows what it's like to be blind like her, and Komugi finally knows her face, allowing each to better understand the other as they disappear (the soundtrack used during their scene of death is called "Understanding"
Excellent comment, but some parts on the last paragraph you mention her when you wanted to mention him and vice versa. But I was still able to understand hopefully others don't get it too confused.

I think my favorite thing about komugi is the fact that she is blind. She could never judge Meruem by his appearance, merely his actions and words. I think it’s beautiful that one of her last actions was being able to finally touch his face, someone who prior to their relationship wouldn’t let such a thing happen, especially by someone who he previously thought was beneath him.

In addition, as they are playing in the bunker before their deaths, Meruem sees a blinding light radiating from Komugi as she "reverses his reversal", making her "the light that illuminates even the all-powerful light". Despite being far weaker (and blind to boot), her light shined far brighter than his. Then, as he dies, Komugi holds him and feels his head, allowing her to finally "see" or know what his face is like. Thus, as they die, Meruem joins Komugi in blindness as she joins him in death. Meruem can finally see what Komugi has been seeing all along, and knows what it feels like to be blind like her, and Komugi finally knows his face, allowing each to understand the other more as they fade away (the OST used during their death scene is called "Understanding"). Touching, isn't it? Togashi is a mastermind, and this entire story, especially this arc, is a masterpiece, a beautiful work of art, a canvas depicting love, hatred, innocence, corruption, happiness, suffering, loyalty, betrayal, anger, sadness, life, death, malevolence, destruction, resolve, determination, avarice, sacrifice, "true" power, truth, and understanding.
Not only Mereum became blind. But all of his senses died so he couldn't see, feel, nor smell Kumugi at that moment. That feeling of fear of being left alone in the dark.
Seen this episode so many times and I still can't get over Meruem and Komugi's death.. This arc is so dark right from the get go that I never thought that in the end I'd cry so ugly for the boss villain 😭
For context; when Komugi asked if she can join him it’s Japanese equivalent to “I do” in a marriage proposal. And SPY+MARSHALL words when combined in Japanese becomes LOVE.😢😢😢😢
I do wish we had half an episode to see Komugis backstory, we hear about how badly she was treated but I just wish we could have seen it for comparison so we can see how Meruem makes her so happy
Finally some reactors that understand the importance of meruem development and not be mad that he didn’t go all out in the end. I also bawled my eyes out during the last scene.
This touched something so powerful because of the depth of it's message, and of the kings understanding of existence he attained in his final moments. Love, Light, and Warmth are three aspects of the "Spirit" which HxH system is based on (from Buddhist/Hinduist understanding of the Soul). His final moments contained all 3 of those things- shared between both him and Komugi. He probably learned it from seeing here brilliance and gratitude for life with each movement. The King realized the true essence of life finally at his death- as the story goes for most. I'm glad he had that moment before dying, he would've been an amazing/powerful person if he lived on on the other side of that new understanding. Anime is just so powerful. And the depth of writing in this show is sooo good with spiritual connections I love you all. Thanks for bringing warmth to my soul
Meruem was not a main character, but an enemy character who frightened humanity. Komugi is blind and has not been given love by his family, and Meruem is a race that does not know love. But his final years were filled with the most love. The depiction is truly amazing.
crazy how if meruem somehow was able to consume pitous nen. its not crazy to say he wouldnt have developed an advanced Doctor blyth to basically heal himself from his poison
Komugi, a weak kind blind girl, basically saved humanity from a powerful vicious king . And the end the king find his humanity while gon lost his, a masterful story.
This episode sent me into a depression for a few days afterwards, I was just totally out of it. I remember I was in college at the time. Then, later on, when Komugi uses Kokoriko again, she actually develops a counter to the counter ("she reversed my reversal???"), representing that the King piece (Meruem) apparently actually does have to die after all (because of the Rose's poison). However, immediately after beating Meruem using Kokoriko (symbolizing his imminent death), Komugi and Meruem start one final game together, a game that they never finish. 1-5-1 Black King -> 9-5-1 White Lieutenant General, I believe, or something to that extent. Immediately afterwards, they die together, leaving on the board Meruem's one black piece and Komugi's single white piece, together in Gungi forever. This represents that the two were always united through Gungi, and will continue to be together even after death, undisturbed and united for all eternity. Meruem places his piece down, symbolizing his death, and then Komugi responds by placing her piece down next to his, showing that she is perfectly willing to die at his side..
The black screen/black panels in the manga show that the Rose's poison has made Meruem go blind. That's why he has to keep asking Komugi if she's still there, because he can't see her anymore. This is ironic because his name means "the light that illuminates/shines upon all". He even got some godlike light-related photon-based powers before his death, allowing him to fulfill his name. Togashi is a mastermind, and this entire story, especially this arc, is a masterpiece, a beautiful work of art, a canvas depicting love, hatred, innocence, corruption, happiness, suffering, loyalty, betrayal, anger, sadness, life, death, malevolence, destruction, resolve, determination, avarice, sacrifice, "true" power, truth, and understanding.
this scene is one of the best in the history of ANIME the Story the Narrator and the Author.
I saw when you wanted to put your arm around her but didn't. Never hesitate again or you'll regret it forever.
One of the most Grand scenes in all of anime
Not only Mereum became blind. But all of his senses died so he couldn't see, feel, nor smell Kumugi at that moment. That feeling of fear of being left alone in the dark.
Seen this episode so many times and I still can't get over Meruem and Komugi's death.. This arc is so dark right from the get go that I never thought that in the end I'd cry so ugly for the boss villain 😭
this is one of the BEST LOVE STORY in anime
This moment is so beautiful you can not avoid to drop some tears.
HxH was so weird when these two not even the main MC but they are the main focus and impactful to viewers.
just seeing this now. Glad to see you reacted to HxH, especially this episode! Beautiful ending for such a tumultuous arc.
Este capitulo lo vi hace 6 años y me sigue quebrando...
Don't worry this is the most any of us have cried tbh especially the first time 😭
Imagine crying over a villain who's an ant!
Also me: 。゜(`Д´)゜。
The irony that meruem is asking a blind person if she's still there
For context; when Komugi asked if she can join him it’s Japanese equivalent to “I do” in a marriage proposal. And SPY+MARSHALL words when combined in Japanese becomes LOVE.😢😢😢😢
Best love moment on TV show, not just in anime series!!
this is in my top 5 of all time, this moment.
メルエムが「どうした?なぜ泣く」とコムギに尋ねた時に犬のように動くのが興味深いです
What a masterpiece by Yoshihiro Togashi. And he's back at work on the manga.
MASTERPIECE 🥺😭❤
This has to be the most heartbreaking villian dead of all time 😢
I do wish we had half an episode to see Komugis backstory, we hear about how badly she was treated but I just wish we could have seen it for comparison so we can see how Meruem makes her so happy
Better love story than Twilight!!!
メルエムが見つけたとき、コムギが言った「4-7-1 帥」には隠された意味があります。
「4-7-1」は日本語で「死なない」と読むことが出来ます。
つまり、帥(王)は死んでいません。あくまで考察です。
thats so cool!! as expected, togashi sensei is a genius writer after all :)
Finally some reactors that understand the importance of meruem development and not be mad that he didn’t go all out in the end. I also bawled my eyes out during the last scene.
That's be a dope tattoo.. with mini fights over the board lol
And the depth of writing in this show is sooo good with spiritual connections
I love you all. Thanks for bringing warmth to my soul
Amazing how anime can make you feel
Gon and mereum, parallel lines that never meet
Meruem was not a main character, but an enemy character who frightened humanity. Komugi is blind and has not been given love by his family, and Meruem is a race that does not know love. But his final years were filled with the most love. The depiction is truly amazing.
I cry everytime and I hate repeating things . That tells you how of a good storyteller Togashi is. And the studio did a great adaptation too
Nice😢
not even netero, was able to defeat him..but she..she showed the king, who the REAL entity is
Sometimes theres beauty in death
crazy how if meruem somehow was able to consume pitous nen. its not crazy to say he wouldnt have developed an advanced Doctor blyth to basically heal himself from his poison
I think it's possible he didn't even need and advanced version. There is a real chance that even Pitou's version could've save him.
I don't think so pouf could manipulate himself on a cellular level and still got killed by the poison.
@@99range92def a poison himself and no one else besides meruem was aware of
Meruem and Komugi’s relationship remind me of Cloud and Aerith’s relationship from FF7! Soulmates love!
It’s perfect art that’s why it’s so sad.
Komugi, a weak kind blind girl, basically saved humanity from a powerful vicious king . And the end the king find his humanity while gon lost his, a masterful story.
I’ve watched this so much and I cry every time 😭
No doubt the most satisfying cry bro has ever had
バックストーリーも無しに敵キャラにここまで好感を抱かせる冨樫はやはり天才だ
何度見ても泣ける最高の作品を生み出した冨樫義博先生に拍手
This episode sent me into a depression for a few days afterwards, I was just totally out of it. I remember I was in college at the time. Please read this so you can better understand the ending scene:
Kokoriko ("The King Must Die") is an advanced Gungi technique developed by Komugi that centers around isolating the King(as in Gungi piece, no Meruem)separating it from other pieces and killing it off. Just like Netero and hunters were planning to do to Meruem. However Komugi unexpectedly develops a counter to this technique ("The King Is Saved") in the middle of a game, meaning that the king piece (representing Meruem) no longer has to die (since he unexpectedly survives the nuke).
Then, later on, when Komugi uses Kokoriko again, she actually develops a counter to the counter ("she reversed my reversal?!") representing that the King piece (Meruem) actually does have to die after all (because of the poison). However, immediately after beating Meruem using Kokoriko (symbolizing his imminent death), Komugi and Meruem start one final game together, a game when they never finish. 1-5-1 Black King -> 9-5-1White Lieutenant General....I believe, or something to that extent. The counter she found is that the King doesn't have to die alone.
Immediately after they die together leaving on the board Meruem's one black piece and Komugi's single white piece, together in Gungi forever. This represents that the two were always united through Gungi, and will continue to be together even after death, undisturbed and united for all eternity. Meruem places his piece down symbolizing his death ,and then Komugi responds by placing hers next to his, showing that she is perfectly willing to die at his side...
The black screen/black pannels in the manga show that the Roses's poison has made Meruem go blind. That's why he has to keep asking Komugi if she is still there, because he can't see her anymore. This is ironic because his name means "the light that illuminates/shine upon all". he even got some god-like related photon-based powers before his death, allowing him to fulfill his name. Meruem can finally what Komugi has been seeing all along, and knows what it feels like to be blind like her,and Komugi finally knows his face, allowing each other to understand the other more as they fade away (the OST used during their death scene is called "understanding").
Didnt think yall would upload this
what a beautiful relationship
Not bringing 131 to TH-cam?
Exactly my thoughts
But I get it Togashi wrote hunter hunter so amazingly. Which is why the fact hes been putting out more chapters lately and it's awesome all around.. it's sad that he was the reason she died. But also netero did what he had to do.. meurum did way too many terrible things to stay alive..
I watched that episode a hundred time and im still crying😢
in the end, it wasn't a hunter or assassin that saved the world.
it was the love of a blind girl that saved the world.
Ive watched so many animes and within them a lot of sad ones but this was the only scene, the only one I cried on which surprised me
Hxh will always be my #1
In the end the Ants were more human than.....humans.
When I first started watching it, I thought it was a story about ants and humans killing each other, but it turned out to be a story of pure love between humans and ants.
😭😭😭
That's why HxH is a masterpiece in its own way ❤️🩹
King said her snot was disgusting when he met him for the first time, now her snot became blood snot that accompany the King to the end of his life
Togashi is a Genius tellin history
WHAT IS ANIME DOING TO RON HAHAHAA HE IS CONSTANTLY CRYING ❤️ TO SEE IT THO!!!
palm might want to hold off on that hug...
The humans that they hypnotised by Pouf died too
the biggest flaw of the king that he is too human. 🙂
Am glad u at least put this ep out haha
Perfect time to watch Grave of The Fireflies :)
