10 days underground - extreme cave exploration

- We spent 12 days, including 9 consecutive nights, rigging, exploring and documenting Thanksgiving Cave. Real hard-core caving: long duration, heavy packs, claustrophobic passages, verticals - you name, we did it, day after day after day.
This was a major exploration expedition organized by John Lay, with a separate support team for resupply on day 5. The supporters weathered torrential rain outside, and pervasive wetness inside, to deliver what we needed.
plot twist: a giant ant came and poured melted aluminum on the cave.
Thats not a bad comment. Not bad at all. Lol pretty funny.
Dude I see you commenting on so many cave related videos hahaha
Oh damn what if that cave is the home for giant ants that came from a million years ago

My grandfather was a coal miner back in the day. He had to crawl for miles just to get to the location they would be working on any given day. He didn’t make much, but at least he got paid. I can’t imagine putting oneself thru this fresh hell for free.
Your grandfather was a brave man, with the twin risks of collapse and explosion that are uniquely high in coal mines. I would not go in there.
Caving as a hobby is different; and it is one of the very few remaining places on earth where you actually have to go there, to find out what's around the next corner. No satellite, no drone, no nothing... and that is part of the attraction.
NUSKish understood. Stay safe!
@@NUSKish I have a question... There was a thriller/monster movie that came out several years ago called "The Cave"(I think). In the movie they used a hand held radar/mapping gun. How close is science to creating something close to it that would actually work? I am just really curious if it's even possible or beneficial. Thanks. Truly enjoyed the video. It's freaky enough. But I can't imagine the first people going down caves who have no idea where they're going and if they're going to come out, or go into something that they get stuck in, etc!
Exploring new passages is a privilege. We do take the appropriate precautions to ensure we come out again - leaving marks, put rigging into place to ensure we can climb back up a drop, etc. As for getting stuck... you learn your limits by carefully pushing them.

Not enough respect in the comments for hauling those packs all that way; them suckers look heavy! Props to you guys.
It's funny, the first few videos I watched of people caving really freaked me out. The tight squeezes made me squeamish. But the more I watch, the more I'm enticed to try it out. Obviously, I'd start off with something much, much less challenging, but the idea seems a lot less crazy and more exciting than I initially thought.
Hauling packs costs blood. I had zero - none - clothing change with me, to save weight. Food was adequate, the lightest possible. Personal items, none (small toothbrush + mini toothpaste only). You have to have enough batteries and a repair kit. And toilet paper. But you cut absolutely everything else to the bone.

@@ilikeknafs9563 Plenty of water available most of the time. A creek runs through the camp; and in fact flooded out the (very very basic) campsite that the support team were supposed to use. They had to drop their stuff and just go straight back out.
Caving if done by the guidelines is actually quite safe.
@@NUSKishHello, I have a question about the water, too. In order to drink it, do you have to boil it first, to kill possible bacteria? Do you boil big amount of it and put it into bottles to have it for later/the next day at a cooler temperature?

O my, all those small passes where you have to put yourself through and your stuff, I really have respect for you all guys. It looks dangerous and this is absolute no joke! It's great to see you all working so close togheter. You never ever see this in other sports.
Among the rules of cave ethics, an important one is that this is /not/ a competitive sport (as opposed to, for instance, climbing).
My thought: 10 days in a cave.
My brain: If you think your going 10 feet deeper, I'll tell your heart to stop beating

I would never go so deep into any cave and a lot of times when watching people crawl through tight squeezes I feel short of breath but I am always fascinated by the courage and sense of adventure the spelunking type seek. Also, we get to see underground too! Much respect.
Thanks for sharing. Really great video. Glad you guys are ok and had an awesome experience. RESPECT
What a JOURNEY!!!! I went caving once and it was exhilarating. I can’t imagine what you guys felt during this.

the part from 00:00 to 26:14, right?
u guys must be so fit. It looks so demanding and you did it for 9 days ... amazing
What blows my mind is that in order for these maps to be made people would've had to go in these caves WITHOUT KNOWING where to go
Vballnut2117 or, they could’ve used sonar... They use sonar when finding oil deposits in the Middle East all the time.
I used to be big into caving , when going into unexplored caves we would bring big spools of string. If you get lost just follow the string to the exit
I wanna do this! And I am claustrophobic. The photographer is stunning
Thank you! At 15:27 that's me; stunning, as you say ;-)
Reminds me of The Descent.
No large rooms with formations? What would the motivation be for squeezing through claustrophobic rock tunnels, without some visual eye candy somewhere throughout the expedition? Rather pointless, as there's nothing really worth seeing or looking forward to discovering! There's the mystery, of course, seeing what lies concealed within the darkness, but, just endless rocks and tight crawlspaces would discourage me very quickly.
Theres still something interesting about exploring a natural structure humans weren't meant for. Some of those enormous drop offs and waterfalls were pretty cool.
Its cool to me. So far underground all alone creating in holes the size of your body
@@Soulos-oq7ij I'd still get nervous if my supply bag got snagged or jammed somehow in a crevice, or, worse yet, the bag stayed put and I became jammed instead....
I love the idea of exploring subterranean passages and chambers... I used to go with some friends when I was younger to explore a couple of 'wild' caves near us, but nothing as tight and confining as shown in this video! I'm quite older now, so this type of challenge and strenuous excercise is beyond my physical capabilities! Still, I love watching spelunking videos on this forum! They take me 'into' worlds that I shall never be able to see in person!

Ah yes
Shit
I don’t even wanna leave my house for more than 6 hours Lmaoo
I love the comments on here. I do have to say, what the cameras don't get across is the FEELING of caving. Its pure isolation. You are so far away from people. Only those with you and who know the cave well enough to get supplies to you can find you. For some people, that's terrifying. But for others, like myself, it's one of the best ways to get AWAY. Some people go to the mountains, and some people go under them. Furthermore, the tight squeezes really aren't that bad. Honestly, if you aren't claustrophobic, it is just a matter of assessing them and getting through them. Nothing to it. Again, this is coming from someone who loves doing this kind of stuff. For some people, there is no fun involved and it just ends up miserable.
Exactly 😃
@Lucas Miller It really depends on the cave. Above all, I have to say; if you are interested in trying out caving, do not go it alone. Going into a cave by yourself is super dangerous, hence the caveat in my earlier comment regarding "those with you." But, that's just the disclaimer I have to say before answering :). As for your body type, how flexible are you? I am just shy of 6' and make my way through the caves in my county with relative ease when wearing the proper gear. I actually lead spelunking tours of a local show cave, and my test for muscular gentlemen is to ask them to extend their arms and reach above their heads. Generally, if you can readily bring your hands together above your head when extended, you should be fully capable of the squeezes in the cave I work at, and I'd love to see you give it a shot! That being said, some of the squeezes showcased in this video were INTENSE. I would definitely qualify this cave as more expert-level, especially considering they were going into unexplored tunnels. I hope that answers your question :) .

What happens if God forbid someone sprains or breaks a bone, how do you call for help and/or get them out?
Self-rescue, if at all possible, is THE preferred option. Everything else takes days. So - stabilize, splint, duct-tape, fill up with painkillers and get out. If that is not viable, someone spends a day getting out, calls in via the Iridium, and triggers a big response.

Don't you guys have nightmares of being stuck in a claustrophobic situation? I do, by just watching your videos.
Very rarely. It has happened to me, never while inside the cave, and never really seriously. But then, if I weren't confident of managing it I wouldn't go, and that translates to the subconscious as well (or it's the other way round). Preparation is important, mental at least as much as physical.
I wonder if they've ever heard anything strange down there. Watching this I'm left pretty speechless, it's a pretty unique sport, and I'm glad there are those who enjoy it, because personally I don't have the perspective needed to do it. I don't know you guys, but I'm glad you all got home safe. Life is about doing what you love.
Drip drip drip at night is about as far as it goes. Though sometimes the dripping is irregular, or a pool suddenly drains somewhere... and you lie there, half asleep in the darkness and wonder what'll happen next 🤔🙄😁
@@NUSKish 😄, fair enough, sounds like you guys need a little buzz down there to keep things interesting when there is down time. If you have time for just two questions, how far is the farthest you've gone down in a cave?, and have you ever panicked being down there?, happy exploring ✌️.
The "Ice Plug" that defines the innermost end of Castleguard Cave in Canada is about 11km and roughly two days travel from the entrance. But there exist caves that are an order of magnitude larger, so I won't brag 😁
As for panic... no, fortunately not. I've seen other people panic, it's not much fun.
A single moment of realization of how far into the cave they are would set off such panic. Only certain people can do things like this. I would panic 5 meters in. I need lots of space and the idea of not being able to get out in a very long time would send me into severe panic. Fair play you all of you but you are pure nuts.
If it was between life and death and you had to make it through that cave to live,I bet you would surprise yourself and make it through.

I could see some of those passages were a real mind game to figure which hand and foot to put where and when and wondering if it'll work. And the fear of getting your arms pinned between your body and the rock wall. Or arms pinned overheard. I've been in a couple tight squeezes that I wasn't sure I was going to get out of. To me the scariest part was at 15:03 when I realized that the "room" they camped in floods and leaves sand deposited that they had to clear back for sleeping. Imagine being in there and it floods. Just another of the hundreds of crappy ways to die underground.
