ReactOS has been in development since 1996 and is still considered feature-incomplete alpha software. Over 25 years and it still doesn't "work." This is not to denounce all of the hours, blood, sweat, and tears that the developers poured into this, but it is NOT a functional Windows replacement; it has many compatibility issues and is more of a hobby project in frustration at this point. Other than the curiosity of it, you would never actually use this as a Windows replacement; there would be no reason to.

The problem that it spat out on you had to do with the installer being a 16-bit application. It was rather common at the time for the installers for even 32-bit applications to be in 16-bit format, and because the NTVDM of ReactOS doesn't support 16-bit applications the installer didn't get to open. There's a good chance the game you were trying to install would have worked, because it probably was a 32-bit application.
NTVDM not supporting 16-bit WIndows apps. There is however an option (in nightly builds, not in that old 0.4.14 release) to install OTVDM that would handle the 16-bit windows app being launched (this is as a hack until ReactOS get in-house 16-bit windows app support).

You were lucky it didn't crash/BSOD in the middle ^^ Also, you were brave installing ReactOS on the same drive as your recovery partition you wanted to keep.
Nice to see it actually running on actual hardware. Last time i tried i couldn't even pass the boot screen. Also, you REALLY should use manual focus for screen capture like this. If would prevent that awfull jerking effect, and would prevent texte blurring out when the screen content is changing. At least it's what i do when i use a camera to capture a screen like this.

That won't happen. The goal of ReactOS is to be a replacement for the Windows NT line of Windows operating systems, not Windows 9x/Me. Most older Windows games before the appearence of Windows XP where written for Windows 95/98 and WinMe. Windows XP belongs to the Windows NT line, the same applies to W2K, Win7, Win8, Win10 and Win11.

What's the difference between MBR and VBR? A master boot record (MBR) is created when a hard drive is partitioned, but it's not contained within a partition. Its job is to find the partition with the VBR so that the boot process can begin. Unlike the VBR, the MBR is not specific to any operating system.
MBR overwrites any bootloader you have on disk, let's say grub, it gets overwritten, second option just copies the loader to disk but leaves the bootloader intact so you can keep your old config, but will need further work to get ReactOS booting alongside the other OS in the disk

ReactOS needs to take it a step further and build their own PCs inspired by the 80s and 90s and resurrect them from the grave so they can start competing against Microsoft I would definitely say this is NOT Linux and is its own thing. I am testing out ZorinOS as well which is Linux though but the free layout theme is based on Windows XP mixed with XFCE, Gnome, and Cinnamon based programming and Windows software works out of the box and IDK what version of Wine it uses but everything works on demand C++ or not it's based on Ubuntu and Debian which it of course has a free and paid version but is as close to experiencing Windows XP in 2024 without having security compromised.

It's not a failed attempt to replace anything. It is in development and alphas are released every now and then, as have been for the last 20+ years. This is an ongoing project to create a reverse engineered open source os that runs windows applications

If it's acting as Windows NT 5.2.3790 (Windows XP Professional 64-bit Edition), theoretically you could trick the Windows Vista setup and upgrade from ReactOS to Windows Vista, but I'd assume you'd have to rename the ReactOS system root folder to Windows to make it work

There's no real rush for ReactOS to be done, but in 20 or 30 years it will be pretty nice to have a windows xp fill-in that hopefully gets bells and whistles from newer OS'es as well. And maybe they can get it installable on....pretty much anything by then....instead of just old computers. XP hardware is still pretty available, but someday it won't be and we'll be happy reactos exists. We're so far off from when it will be really needed and wanted though so they have plenty of time. Look at how the gnu/linux ecosystem has developed, it's only getting better every day.

ReactOS lacks the ability to use a modern web browser, Instead you can use an outdated Firefox, and that's not safe, and/or recommended. That's the minimum expected from an modern OS, and if ReactOS wants to be a real windows competitor, It should work on these things
ReactOS didn't even finish kernel compatibility with most hardware, wow64 support or even UEFI support. If people are expecting this to actually be usable anytime soon then forget about it.
Could be, but I think most hospital "computers" are actually thin clients that use Citrix Receiver (now called Workspace) or VMware Horizon to connect to a remote server farm with ancient versions of Windows running in terminal server mode. Windows Server has a different GUI then regular Windows (depending on the OS version) so that might be why you think that React OS is in use by hospitals. I have seen a very limited amount of hospitals, veterinarians or opticians that actually use Linux or Linux apps in a terminal but those are extremely rare in my opinion. Most of the time it's just a bunch of stupid, overly expensive thin clients or custom/proprietary computers for e.g. MRI machines.
It's (unfortunately) not going to happen. Does anyone seriously believe that ReactOS will ever be considered as a "Windows replacement"? I mean ... The year is now 2023 and there are rumors of Windows 12 in the media. And ReactOS hasn't even come close to the compatibility level of Windows XP (built in 2001). It almost seems to me that Microsoft is developing its Windows faster than ReactOS can "rebuild" it. Who is supposed to use it if they (optimistically estimated) will be done in 5 to 10 years? At best, it will be good for running retro games. Or am I missing something? There also doesn't seem to be enough demand for larger sponsors to be willing to finance the project. The concept of "Windows alternative" is good, but the problem is that Linux distros are too different and not unified enough to make native Linux software run on all of them. It COULD catch up and even surpass Windows if we had just three distros, one for gaming, one for professionals and an everyday distro, but instead we have thousands all trying to do the same things but in different ways with different results. As it is, it remains solely as a good concept with a lacking execution; it may combat Windows, but definitely no time soon.
there is demand, a lot of hardware such as ATM machines run on software that was developed during windows 3.1 era, they buy windows license just to keep it running and since Microsoft stopped support its not secure. don't look at the old windows start menu, thats just a skin, you will eventually be able to make it look like windows 7 or 10 if you like.

The current level of compatibility is between Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003/XP. Reverse engineering all the aspects of a melting pot closed source OS was never a good idea.

ReactOS didn't even finish kernel compatibility with most hardware, wow64 support or even UEFI support. If people are expecting this to actually be usable anytime soon then forget about it.

I'm pretty sure this is the OS that some of the Hospital computers use.
They have a similar UI to this.
Could be, but I think most hospital "computers" are actually thin clients that use Citrix Receiver (now called Workspace) or VMware Horizon to connect to a remote server farm with ancient versions of Windows running in terminal server mode.
Windows Server has a different GUI then regular Windows (depending on the OS version) so that might be why you think that React OS is in use by hospitals.
I have seen a very limited amount of hospitals, veterinarians or opticians that actually use Linux or Linux apps in a terminal but those are extremely rare in my opinion.
Most of the time it's just a bunch of stupid, overly expensive thin clients or custom/proprietary computers for e.g. MRI machines.
They just run WinXP with classic theme.
React OS May Be Better Than Windows
This is not the way to replace Windows. The right way is the way Microsoft is doing it, bringing a Linux kernel into Windows with WSL.

Does anyone seriously believe that ReactOS will ever be considered as a "Windows replacement"? I mean ... The year is now 2023 and there are rumors of Windows 12 in the media. And ReactOS hasn't even come close to the compatibility level of Windows XP (built in 2001).
It almost seems to me that Microsoft is developing its Windows faster than ReactOS can "rebuild" it. Who is supposed to use it if they (optimistically estimated) will be done in 5 to 10 years? At best, it will be good for running retro games. Or am I missing something?
There also doesn't seem to be enough demand for larger sponsors to be willing to finance the project. The fact that the project doesn't have enough developers is a permanent state of affairs.
So, the purpose of the project is not clear to me. Extremely slow progress, no major demand, no recognizable future.

The concept of "Windows alternative" is good, but the problem is that Linux distros are too different and not unified enough to make native Linux software run on all of them.
It COULD catch up and even surpass Windows if we had just three distros, one for gaming, one for professionals and an everyday distro, but instead we have thousands all trying to do the same things but in different ways with different results.
As it is, it remains solely as a good concept with a lacking execution; it may combat Windows, but definitely no time soon.
there is demand, a lot of hardware such as ATM machines run on software that was developed during windows 3.1 era, they buy windows license just to keep it running and since Microsoft stopped support its not secure.
don't look at the old windows start menu, thats just a skin, you will eventually be able to make it look like windows 7 or 10 if you like.

The current level of compatibility is between Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003/XP. Reverse engineering all the aspects of a melting pot closed source OS was never a good idea.
