So many little dogs are allowed to get away with murder. Just because they are small they are not trained or taken seriously. It is not fun for a dog to live an unbalanced life, big or small. I breed small breed miniature and toy Australian Shepherds and try to caution my puppy adopters on just this subject. The little dogs need the same rules and training and mental and physical stimulation as the big ones!

This reminds me of my moms Yorkie soooo much! When my grandfather was alive, we used to visit him in Russia every winter. He ran a sheep and rabbit farm and had a bunch (when I say a bunch, I mean more than 10) of those huuuuuge Caucasian Shepherds - and I'm sure everyone who knows dogs, knows about these Russian dogs. However, my moms 4 pound Yorkie ''Qi'' was spreading terror and fear amongst them, every single year. Every single one of my grandfathers dogs was afraid of my moms 4 pound Yorkie! Suuuper hilarious to see! It's like, one day you hear about them destroying a whole pack of wholes, then the other day you see those same dogs running away in fear from a tiny, mad Yorkie! Wish I had filmed it back then...

absolutely. A lot of people think they can get away with their dog being needlesly agressive or defensive because they can't "seriously" injure anyone (which is another misconception, just ask my fucked up hand), but it isn't only about other people or dogs. I have a lab mixed with some kind of giant dog and he's been attacked by smaller dogs before and he was fine, got them off of him and that was that, but if my dog was just the slightest bit more reactive, he could have inadvertently really hurt the smaller dogs, even if his reaction would have been completely justified. A small dog might not hurt a bigger dog, but that lil thing is gonna GET hurt if it pulls up to the wrong dog with the wrong attitude.

This little dog is exactly like the guy at the bar who runs his mouth to a big dude, then yells "hold me back, guys, hold me back!" at his friends. My ex's golden used to pull a lot like this dog. I kid you not, I fixed it in one walk. All I did is took the dog around the block, and every time it pulled, I stopped. We didn't even get to the backside of the block before the problem was solved. Joel's videos about how to turn and pull the dog back before even going out and then giving a little collar tug probably work better than what I did, but the point is that these issues can be solved pretty quickly. Now this dog also had the dog reactivity and that takes more time through desensitization.

    • @motorola4762
      @motorola4762 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I stopp as well when my dog pulls.it drives you nuts at first but it really works. I emphasise his right behaviour by praising him and when he stops when he walks in front on a loose leash and stops when I stop he gets praise and treats. I tried different things but the stopping and waiting method was the best for my sanity and stress level. :-)

My aunt had a Chihuahua Boston Terrier mix, rescued from an abusive house. She didn’t have the time to train him, so he was an absolute hellion. I dog sat him a few times, over a weekend or during a summer break, and he would start out exactly like this little guy. I could reverse some of it after a week of diligent training, but any time less than that was pure torture. It got way worse as he got older, as he was a pain to walk and couldn’t get out his energy with his family. Then I’d watch him and we’d be back at square one.
Watching your videos has me wondering if I could have changed him, if I adopted him full time. I still think about him and miss him, even if he was a little asshole that I only saw twice a year. Unfortunately, he had to be put down. Training like this would have probably saved his life.

This channel has the most well explained content I could ever find on the internet, actually impressive how you still leave this it's 100% free to help us dog owners.
Joel, I follow all the steps you suggest for dog/leash reactivity with my 1y old pup. It works perfectly and he does really well when we are in a park, or next to the dog park behind the fenced area (he can smell the dogs and play but I don't go inside cuz of the environment). Anyways, it never works during walks around the neighborhood... he sees a dog, fixate his eyes on the dog that's coming up the street, lays down, and when the dog gets close he lunges and bark (more like a "give me attention" bark) and I can't never get his attention no matter how many pops I give him. Is this behavior normal? Being ok with dogs at the dog park or when they are close, but being a jerk when dogs are walking by on the other side of street?
Thanks for the awesome work! It's been helping a lot!!

    • @harrymolloy823
      @harrymolloy823 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

The dog is used to playing as a reward after not reacting so the leash frustration when on a walk is going to be more amplified because he doesn’t get to play with every dog he sees. Counterconditioning his response to dogs through marker training and “engage disengage” games from a distance will be the best course of action given you have the time and consistency to properly use this method and work at the dogs pace. This will change the dogs state of mind to be calm when acknowledging dogs as the goal is to reward calm behavior and the ability to engage with you despite a distracting dog. If this doesn’t work for you, it’s not the method, it’s the failure to properly use it. That being said, an easier route would be correcting the dog right as he’s about to fixate and if it doesn’t work, the dog is too over threshold and you must manage the situation and work from farther back. Seems to me that corrections aren’t working very well for you currently which means the best course would be to countercondition since the dogs response isn’t being changed by leash corrections. Leash corrections also take a while to truly change the dogs state of mind, as it more so will suppress the behavior without teaching an alternate one. That being said, it is your choice which route you want to take and if done properly both routes will achieve similar results, it’s just that they’re vastly different processes that work on the dogs mind in opposite ways. But if you’re keen on keeping up the corrections, you can achieve the desired behavior, although counterconditiong in the long run will result in a calmer dog who is able to think for itself when presented with an opportunity, and the dog will choose to engage with you without you having to correct the dog. In my opinion, that is more rewarding to put in the extra time to have a dog trained this way, but then again, if you don’t feel you have the time or ability to do so, Beckham will present you with the next best option as he does great work with his dogs although I don’t use his methods. Best of luck!

Try putting him into a sit. Even if you have to do a butt touch to do so. Make him wait while they walk past, tell him leave it and pop if he tries to break the sit, if that dog chooses to approach, fine, if not then tough he’ll have to sit and watch it go by. Mine used to pull me ect now he knows, he usually automatically goes into a sit he sees a dog walk approach. But there’s no pulling no lunging and no barking.

My flips out when he sees most other dogs too. Not sure it's fear aggressive think it's insecurity and being tethered ro a leash.however i would never risk letting him be attact by a strange dog.so he has to deal with it. At least i get him out his barking and lunging fits quickly now. I read his body language and get the most space we can to other dogs.so he learns that I'm no lunetic risk who is risking our life. and as soon as he perks his ears up and watches the other dog I correct him. I'm working on a course right now were I explain how to deal with such behaviours.

I have a Jack Russell Terrier, had her for 15 years, she's great, very docile, very nice, and she knows how to control herself.
Everyone I've met that ever Interracted with one always goes "wow, your Jack Russell is so calm, aren't they usually supposed to be very energic and uncontrollable?"
And while yes, she's both very smart and nice, it's all because I was very strict with her since she was a puppy.
Back then she was your standard Jack-Russell, she wanted to play 24/24, would bark at all-time for no reasons, and would chew anything she'd find out of boredom.
It took a long ass time to address theses issues but it did work-out.
I had to correct her behavior whenever she was doing something wrong, and sometimes peoples would find me a bit hard on her.
Because peoples always want to overlook wrongdoings as long as it comes from something cute like a dog or a small-child.
They never realize that said dog/child will one day grow up adult, and by then it might be too late to correct bad habits.
Anyways, it took a long time, it was basically a constant thing, I even had to teach her a "signal" for whenever she would go too-far, I'd snap my fingers as a warning,
And nowaday she's great, still as playful just not as overbearing, she absolutely loves to go on walk but doesn't pull on her leash, she's very social but isn't afraid of standing her ground if a dog is annoying her.
Took some time and constant efforts but now she's absolutely great, I'm very proud of her.

Can you please show how you addressed the leash reactivity with this small dog. I find my Maltese’s shitzu does the same but I am struggling with the leash reactivity and also being reactive to other dogs when i am driving.
I take him to the park everyday and he is now behaving (mostly) and getting better. I walk him in gentle leader but this has not reduced the leash reactivity.
    How do address these issues?

One of my boy Chihuahuas tried "being the big dog" and he growled at a male pitbull. Did not go well. The pit picked up my dog and shook him from side to side causing several puncture wounds in his chest and one hell of an emergency vet bill. I don't ever want stuff like that to happen so I am here watching every video of yours I can find because I don't like the types of trainers that are softer. Your style resonates with me.

My 7 month old female Maltese is bold too. She doesn’t bark at other dogs and she is never mean to them either. She has started playing more rough where she puts her paw on a dog, then runs away(so they’ll chase her).
I don’t like her being comfortable putting her paws on other dogs so I stop that. I socialized her since 4 months and she wants to play with most dogs she meets. Not every dog wants to play with her though.
My puppy was playing too much with another small dog that didn’t want to play. The dog barked at my puppy and the owner apologized. I told the owner their dog is setting boundaries for my puppy. I leashed her after that and had her sit next to me.

I rescued a challenging dog from the heart of Baltimore City. She is doing amazing thanks to you.. just know you are saving the lives of many dogs who otherwise might not be giving a chance .
I truly want to become a trainer to help rescues with challenging dogs.
I am a nurse full time but have a mission to help dogs.
She is a big pit mix with leash reactivity but is amazing now.
Do you have a course for people wanting to become trainers?

Small/tiny dog insecurity and attempted dominance is a real problem area - I'd love to see more videos with clients like this.
My chi is pretty good for the most part, but ends up being a bit jerky and v overwhelmed with dogs bigger than her (so nearly everyone). They generally are friendly but "too much", so she'll snarl and chase them away from her immediate area (1-2m radius).
Idk what to do because in a way I don't mind, because she's small and could get hurt by a careless dog, but I also don't want her to be an asshole and I want her to actually enjoy meeting other dogs (she fucking loves other chis).

That dog had no desire to dominate anyone as far as I could see. Feisty read young and inquisitive and lively. Uncertain, bit nervous, huge dollop of fascination, excitement and, before getting to meet, frustration. Never had the opportunity to learn - runs up - then sits down because he's unsure - backs off at the first opportunity. Returns to owners when too much. Those guys could have just gone on a walk with a good mix of other dogs. Aside from running up to the wrong dog through lack of experience which you don't want, that dog did nothing to warrant a canine correction. Not for me.

I have a 6 year old, 16 lb maltipoo mix and she’s never been a huge fan of dogs. We tried to socialize her when she was a puppy but she never had any interest. I can’t figure out what triggers her but some dogs she’ll be uninterested, some dogs she’ll bark at like crazy (it’s usually only on leash so I think she’s afraid) and she also pulls like crazy on her leash to smell everything along our walks. Any suggestions?

@Beckmans Dog Training I have an mini Australian Shepard (Frank-E), when we go for walks I usually use a haltie setup with the slip lead. When we walk like this he is practically perfect; he shows little to no reactivity other than sometimes to a loud sound, he follows me and the leash is lose with no tension on the leash other than the occasional correction. However I have walked him with a more traditional leash as well as a non-haltie slip lead set up. Any idea what I am doing wrong? XD

My dog is very similar to this dog but she is a 60 lb pit that I rescued a few months ago. I have been trying to work with her on it and could tell right away after getting her that she was probably unsocialized or very leash reactive because she lunges and whines at other dogs. When I did adopt her the shelter told me she was dog aggressive because she would lunge at dogs even small puppies. But the few dogs I have been able to get her around she’s fine with them once she greets them and just wants to play. I just don’t have very many options to get her around more dogs and some people will move away because of her lunging thinking she is aggressive even if I explain to them that since I have had her she has never attacked a dog. Anyone have any recommendations on to help with this?

    • @okami-design

I have exactly the same problem, but I guess I'm living far away from you so we won't be able to practice together :( I have a mix breed (adopted while he was an adult already) but very much terrier looking and behaving dog (11 kg). He's now 4 and still really unsocialized because of the same problem you're facing. (other dog's owners) One time an owner even started shouting and hitting at my dog. With my mom's 2 dogs he's really loving, relaxed and just playing all the time, because he had the opportunity to get to know them. But with other dogs...same like yours. And I also think that he's not doing it out of aggression (never hurt any dog or anyone ever) but out of excitement. He want's to play with every dog, but can't meet properly another dog on the leash, only off leash or when he's really tired after a day playing with my mom's dogs. She lives far, so I can't go there every day to have a really tired and satisfied dog all the time. I think Joel is so right about that only playing with other dogs makes them really tired and relaxed. I'm playing with my dog every day and walking him twice, but it's just not enough for him, they need to meet and play with other dogs. I was thinking sometimes that I might arrange a "doggie date" through the internet or something, or just try to find a place where I can take him to socialize? Are there places to do exactly and only this with trainers involved? Unfortunately there are no Joels in every country :D

Good information. Thank you. I seen a video one time where a woman rescued a neighborhood dog. She kept him for several months. He killed the cat and then later fought with one of her smaller dogs. He then tried attacking her and kept causing her. How to avoid things like that? The dog was too small in size to protect itself.. How to break up a fight and not get bitten?
