    There's a couple of reasons I think e collars mess dogs up so much 1) corrections equal a pain stimulus. They learn to associate corrections with pain or at the very least a sensation that is very confusing to them 2) they don't understand where the pain/ negative stimulus comes from which can lead to them being constantly on edge and afraid. When dogs are corrected by other dogs during normal natural socialization, they understand where the correction is coming from and who gave the negative stimulus. With the e collar they don't and its a fundamental disconnect with how dogs naturally learn

      Correct! I’ll offer another point which you touched on at the end. Nothing in nature is like a shock, except a lightning strike, so the dogs brain doesn’t know how to interpret it. The mother, father, siblings may be dominate, rough, bite the puppy on the neck. But a shock is “confusing” to the brain if turned up too high or used when they’re already in a certain state of mind.

      I went to a dog park once and there was a woman there with her lab that she boasted about using an e-collar on. My dog is a very playful and social samoyed mix and she was rough playing with this woman’s dog and this poor girl was all kinds of messed up. Practically unable to give corrections- she would be playing along one second and running away tail between her legs the next. It really wigged me out knowing that woman is definitely the cause of her dog’s issues by using such a device. Didn’t help that she also screeched at the top of her lungs “GET HER OFF OF HER” every time my lightweight dog even remotely looked like she was playing rough, therefore escalating the situation. Poor dog 😔

      I use an e-collar very sparingly with my dog.. never to distract from looking at a dog or looking at anything really. I use it specifically to reinforce "Leave it", especially when she's about to try to eat something bad, stuff like that. If she wants to sit and watch a plane go by overhead, that's fine with me.. I won't correct such things. Wants to watch a dog walk down the road, sure thing. Wants to eat out of the garbage, rip up the carpet, or bite my shoes while Im wearing them..absolutely not. She wears it when we go hunting, hiking, or yard training. I use a SportDog brand collar, in case anyone wonders. 99% of the time it's on Vibe/Tone. She doesn't respond to level 1 stim at all, level 2 gets her attention sometimes, and level 3 either works great or makes her yelp.. depends how heightened her mental state is. I try to only use 3 when she's highly focused, as when she's just calm is when it's too much stim for her. Vibe/Tone/2 is a good daily setting for us. I definitely recommend starting with Vibe, and the lowest possible Stim level. Don't jack it all the way up to test.. I've never hit my dog with a level 7, I tried it on myself first at all levels, 7 gets MY attention. If you have a grizzly bear, 7 might work. I have a Pitbull/GSD/Cattle Dog

It was also great seeing the lightbulb moment when Joel figured out the key to overcoming Bubbles’ reactivity was to get the owner patting the new dog. @@Ethanmcmahonn how is Bubbles doing? Do you notice he is triggered more by black dogs due to those routy black labs off leash in your neighborhood? When he went at the one dog after looking so great, that was the first thing thst came to mind for me, given that I've seen it before in my clients' dogs! Maybe have Joel help change his perspective on black dogs/Black Labs and flood him with new more positive experiences with them, correct any inappropriate reaction, and hopefully make some new friends out of it. Maybe he will be able to at least ignore the ones you usually see on your walk. Pet them all-can you pet those ones off leash in your neighbourhood? 🤷‍♀️ It would be amazing to fix that too!

      @@joyfulk9services Bubbles actually seems to be doing better already! In the past few days we have had 2 off leash dogs run up to him and he did not show any aggression what so ever. I pet every dog that runs up to us and it seems to help. We haven't seen the black labs in a while, I'm going to see Joel again in 2 days and I'm hoping that bubbles can spend more time with Kiki ( the dog he didn't like ) so that he has more positive experiences with those types of dogs. After this training session Ive learned to stay much more calm when an off leash dog runs up to us which I think has helped a lot as well. Since bubbles has a dog aggression history, I often get pretty tense when dogs start running up on us and after watching this video I can see that when I'm tense he picks up on that. So now when dogs run up to us I just stay calm and remind myself being anxious about the situation isn't gonna help.

      exactly what I thought. looked like an agression from the owner. Like the owner wnated distance between them and the dog and made bubbles more agressive/energetic.
      I think the owner just needs to make bubbles think of something else rather than trying to block sweet dogs away & adding energy to the fire. I like what he tried to do in the first place. Walking in an other direction as a calming distraction.
      Much was the energy of how the owner came before it happened like he put in energy into it and the dog snapped. Like the owner got worried by beckman's comment of the dog's raised hair.

    One thing I noticed after what the owner said about the two black dogs off leash in his neighborhood... Black dogs could be a trigger for him.....I have met a few dogs with triggers by a particular "look". Might be worth noting. Only because he has rehearsed the behaviour before in response to those black dogs... Obviously ecollar could be a factor, but maybe keep an eye on those black dogs/labs.

    • @joyfulk9services
      @joyfulk9services 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I'm sure you're already brainstorming for next session with Bubbles, but I think getting several neutral black dogs out using this formula and start creating new more positive experiences with them may be a good start 🙈 desensitize as well as change whatever current perspective Bubbles has on that colour/breed of dog....obviously not "the" fix, but would love to see what happens with several one after the other, as well as several all at once 🤷‍♀️
      Be sure to keep sharing the progress on this owner and dog! I live for dog behaviour and this one is an awesome puzzle.

      This is so true about some dogs being triggers, my last dog was a white German Shepherd and 3 dogs all used to go berserk when they saw him and I mean they never met or even sniffed each other, one was a Schnauzer the other a Cairn terrier type and the last was a chocolate lab who would literally run from one side of the park to the other barking hysterically at mine, I was frightened to death the first time but when I realised she was more bark than bite I relaxed. My dog never even reacted he was a star. Kind regards, Joanne 🐺

    As an owner and breeder of herding dogs... They are very incredibly attuned to nuances because they have to be able to read stock and respond appropriately.
    When his hair went up a bit and the owner's attention was brought to it, the owner changed his body language / demeanor, which his dog then took a cue from and reacted further. Then when he kicked at the other dog to try to keep it back, it told his dog he didn't want that dog near him, and his dog moved to prevent that.
    I can be walking in the pasture with my dogs when I've told them to "just observe". (That means we're not working right now.) And they are perfectly calm and happy.
    But the second I focus in on something and change my demeanor to indicate discomfort, or make a motion with my hand or give a verbal que or even stare more intently at some or one of the livestock, they move on it.
    They are very attuned dogs, and much of it is inherent to the herding breeds, not taught.
    Very trainable in regards to what you will allow and what you won't allow. But it is something to be aware of when working with herding breeds.

Yet this same dog, who is so easy going in so many different situations, will take a hit from a cow and get right back in there and give no quarter until it backs off in order to save me. This is SO helpful to me. Thank you. I've been working with a rescue Border Collie for a few years now. She is noise phobic and I live in the city, but also reactive towards dogs. The noise phobia translates into fear of outside and her trying to bite me when I try to leash her--huge problem. We have a fenced yard but she goes and hides when she hears a plane, loud car, construction and so it is sometimes hard to get her to go the bathroom. If I can manage to get her leashed and walked, I know she will go. She loves frisbee so we play that until a noise scares her. I haven't been able to let her run around with other dogs as she will go after them--that's why your comment here helped so much as I can replay the video and see what you mean by the protection.

      @@lavahoard1559 I'm glad you've found it useful. 🙂
      Dogs can react from protectiveness or from fear or from a combo of the 2.
      Yours sounds to be leaning strongly towards the fear aspect of it, but there may be some protective instinct behind there, too.
      I would practice gentle yet consistent NILIF with her and also use sound desensitization for dogs - look up on YT - to help her acclimate to the world around her. Start super quietly and only when she's eating. If she stops eating for longer than a split second, it's too loud. Gradually increase volume as tolerated.

    One of my dogs had no socialisation - she was rescued from a coal shed during unrelated police action on property where she spent entire start of her life, just to be bullied and overwhelmed at shelter and then irresponsibly adopted to a family with young kids where they admitted to hitting her. It was a difficult road, truly, but one of the most rewarding. We have built enough trust that she relaxes immediately when I greet the dog, even if that dog is another female, much bigger, or there's several dogs - which used to really scare her. I know she'll always fear kids and loud men, but we're making progress and both she and everyone she meets is safe.
    I think it's the same here - Bubble's trusts his owners judgement more than his own - which just shows that this young man has earned it. It's not that easy to learn that level of genuine trust of an intelligent, anxious dog. Kudos, dude.
    It was lovely to see them meet and play, I still see so many people selfishly denying their dogs all kinds of dog-dog interaction.

    I wanna point out KiKi's appearance matches that of the 2 black labs in the neighborhood that the owner mentioned. Dogs do generalize their experiences. My 7 yr old APBT holds his experiences from ages 1-3 at the dog park. He particularly loves meeting Poodles/Doodles, female Labs (esp yellow labs), Goldens, and Huskies. I can tie these breeds back to several friends he made. He DOESN'T like any bulldogs (English, French, etc) or pugs, and is very hit/miss with other bully breeds. I can tie this to several instances they weren't neutered, were rude/rough sniffers and/or humping.

    My dog is very similar to this (but worse)... I’m absolutely convinced there’s a genetic component to this.
    Here are my thoughts to whomever this may help:
    Right around the 16:00 mark, he kept taking quick side glances at the other dog and avoiding him in order to go back to play with Prince. It was right around this time that Joel starts to pick up on something and mentions the dog looks ‘not perfect’ at times too. The dog was already starting to get overly stimulated by the situation, and wasn’t quite sure how to deal with it (though he was still doing a great job).
    Then another dog is introduced, and he really starts to get excited. The moment when he bounces off Joel’s leg at 17:14 was the perfect time to snap him out of it with a “HEY!” so he breaks focus before going past his current threshold. Right after that it became a snowball effect of over-arousal, leading to him returning from running around with his hair up, and then the reaction we saw a few seconds later. You don’t want to punish him for playing, but you do need to snap him out of that state of over arousal and remind him to play more calmly/gently is all. Dogs like this struggle with controlling their reactions to stress/excitement, and are hypersensitive to adrenaline.
    The good news here is the cause of his reaction here was actually a positive thing! He got overly excited from meeting other dogs, so excited he temporarily lost control. If he’s anything like my dog, you’re going to have to be careful for the first 10-15 minutes in any new situation or environment, and make sure to move at a pace he’s comfortable with, and he will likely get better with age and experience as he works through his initial nervousness and has more positive experiences.

    Immediately prior he was running/being chased by Kiki with his tail tucked, which was a 🚩for me, then the hair up and stiff 🚩, he was then a bit bouncy but he does look stressed with ears pinned and back teeth showing panting, then Griffin joins, possibly pushing him over the limit and he gets a bit snappy - then the owner FABULOUSLY interjects as it’s about to go off
    The bouncy bit is off putting when trying to read him 🤔
    Obviously we don’t know what he was thinking, but that’s the behaviour I’d look out for to intervene if he was my dog.
    I hope this is helpful for people recognising body language.

    No trying to be judgmental here, by any means, but damn you are good. I love the fact that you notice and pick up on the tiniest cues that something is about to go wrong. For example, the raised hair incident, and how you brought that cue to your client's attention. Joel, you are brilliant with animals and I am so glad to have found your channel. Only wish I was closer to you so I could get some professional help with BelBell, my white shepherd puppy who is headstrong and stubborn as a mule. I am trying to do some training with an e-collar, but I am also terrified of using it incorrectly and causing some real behavioral problems down the road. Consequently, I am very cautious about using it and maybe even not using it sometimes when I should have. Blessings to you dear friend. Thanks for all the great instruction.

    I think electronic collars can lead to this sort of neck reactivity too, where any stimulus to the neck area can exacerbate reactivity. I used an e-collar to reinforce recall, which worked great, and tried using it to reduce mean-mugging on a leash and at the dog park - just using the beep setting - which did work to break that fixated, bullying posture - but I think it also made her more easily aggravated by collar pressure, because I've noticed if she's mean mugging on a leash, and I tug the leash to break the posture, it can have the complete opposite result of going from not looking to great to looking absolutely horrible. This is with a territorial semi-dominant female marker with a LOT of attitude since day one, so there's a lot going on there, but in the wrong moment in the wrong posture, that's a trigger that I've noticed. Bubble's moment of reactivity escalating when the owner grabbed the collar pinged my radar a little bit. A gentle leader might be better but that's something I have yet to explore with my dog.
    Anyway, just what I've observed, I'm no expert.

      I have a 12-month pup with an attitude similar to your dog's. In situations where she senses a threat (threat to me and her) and I grab her collar like that -- that sparks an even stronger defense posture/reaction.

    • @MB-lf8rm
      @MB-lf8rm 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wonder if a prong collar can exacerbate reactivity. I got the prong to save her trachea and the nerves in her neck. She (12-months old) rockets out and slams into that flat collar; but hesitates when wearing the prong. Of course, we have a harness, but when she is wearing that she rockets out and bruises her shoulders (and jerks me off my feet).

      @@MB-lf8rm I think a gentle leader might be your best bet (and the harness probably the worst 😅) Even though I have yet to get around to ordering one for my dog for her social issues, I have used them with other dogs in the past, and they're efficient with reducing leash pulling. Combined with Joel's loose leash method, you could probably solve that bolting issue in a couple minutes. I haven't found prong collars to be too effective , and have seen them easy to abuse, but that's my own limited experience. Thinking about it, it's probably easy enough to make a cheap gentle leader with a piece of rope. 🤔

    • @KathgoKat
      @KathgoKat 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think a Gentle Leader is what you should try...to break that gaze...ecollars can actually cause aggression and reactivity , if used for corrections.....at the wrong time. Its tricky..the correction has to b given by the dogs actually reacting..otherwise it can be redirected to you..Also you need to be calm and assertive...any anxiety in us goes right down that lead....Id try a Gentle Leader..breaks their gaze and stops lunging too...Correct with the sharp quick jerk to the side and slack ... like Joel demonstrates so well..IMO e collars should only b used for off leash recall...with dogs who've been properly conditioned to them and have been fully obedience trained without them first.. Im old school tho......We never needed ecollars 45 yrs ago ..

    This is so interesting! For me it was clear that the owner stepping in was the trigger. He played with Kiki and Griffin, then he got chased for a little bit (right before the incident) which to me was not something he enjoyed. It was too much for him. Especially as you can see in the clip from yesterday and this one to that HE is the one who chases all the other times. As a collie I can imagine it's his instinct kicking in. He want's to be in control, and he isn't when the dogs are chasing him, 2 against 1. So he got unsure and told Kiki to back off by head nudging her. That's when the owner stepped in and made him believe the fight was ON. Same thing when the owner "kicked" at the other dogs while dragging hime away. It was yet another reason for him to believe he had to go after them.
    With this I want to say I ofc understand that the owner had to step in, as there are so many loose dogs, but it would have been interesting to see what happened if he didn't.

I've tried distraction, and praising when she has a good interaction, it helped a tiny bit. But lately I also noticed that she'll tolerate other dogs more when I pet those dogs. I would guess if the dog was doing e-collar training for “only” a week, it was done unfairly and incorrectly. It would take much longer than that to condition the dog on low levels, with a very good quality collar, so that the dog understood what was expected. The training would have been fair then. I’m just surmising too though, as I have seen an e-collar do great things at dog training I go to when used correctly. I think Joel’s method without all the gadgets and tools work too. The owner is very tuned in with his dog, can read him very well.

      I was looking through the comments for this . Exactly. If it was for one week, there is no way the ecollar training was done correctly. I suppose any training method, applied incorrectly, could make the situation worse. I don't think any real training of a dog can be done in a week, especially for behavior related issues.

    I have seen exactly this behavior many times in one of my old dogs- a Border Collie as well. Same triggers and sadly similar cause. Not ecollar but a unsuited training method with dominance based overcorrections. And my Sammie played very similar as well as soon as he felt safe with the other dogs. Insecurity paired with some dominance and fear while associating dogs with negative experiences. And very sensitive to any cues by us. If we got nervous it would transfer immediately. Have never seen any other dog react this way until I saw Bubbles here.

  • @puddingp0pz0rz
    @puddingp0pz0rz ปีที่แล้ว

    My take: neighborhood dogs run up to him to harass him unprovoked plus e-collar training makes him sensitive to “bad things happening” at any point (seemingly randomly) during dog interactions. He’s also hyper sensitive to his owner stepping in. The owner stepping in pretty much created the explosion with griffin who he was doing just fine with before the owner stepping in. Owner needed to correct with Kiki but that translated into tension with Griffin which is when he lashed out the first time. He also reacts again only when the owner starts defending their space from Kiki. Negative punishment has made Bubbles extremely sensitive and afraid of negative circumstances and will lash out the moment he senses tension even from his owner about other dogs. That’s why when his owner pets and approves another dog he relaxes too.

  • @traceyyoung3148

    I saw Bubbles trying to move away from Griffin who was constantly sniffing at him. The owner had said that Bubbles doesn't like dogs sniffing his butt and that had triggered an attack in a pet store. Griffin kept following and sniffing at him before Kiki was there too and it was too much pressure for Bubbles. I could see Bubbles trying to create space for himself but couldn't so ended up pushing at Griffin.

    My comment will probably get lost, but I feel like I know what happened at the end. I mean the strategy seems to be legit, each time the owner goes to pet the other dog, Bubbles relaxes and has no problem with the dog, we can see that especially with the shepherd where he is really tense and the moment the owner pets him Bubbles starts wagging tail and relaxes. And he was great running around with all those dogs. But just before Bubbles got mad, the owner stepped in, all tense and Bubbles also probably thought he is yelling at the other dogs and felt the need to protect. That’s my thought. Good luck with Bubbles!
