    Thanks for sharing, Julian!
    Summary below for those who want to cut and paste into their notes, or are too impatient to watch the video :)
    03 9600 MIC = 70
    14 CAT RATE = 38400
    24 DIG DISP = 0Hz
    25 DIG MIC = 65
    26 DIG MODE = USER-U
    39 PKT MIC = 75 (FM operations only)
    FYI I have used similar settings successfully. 24 and 26 are particularly important.

    Excellent video. I may have kept my 817ND had I been able to work out the setting to get it operating PSK31. Pulled a lot of hair trying. Wasn't enjoying QRP on phone so I sold it.

      +Wayd Walker yeah qrp phone can be frustrating. The user manual is pretty unclear about the settings. I think they also didn't intend for us to use the 817 the way that we do with modern tablets and laptops and things like that.

    Hello Julian- Do you use these settings when using the Wolphilink? I just got one and need to tweak it. Seems that I am not decoding, the owners manual does not have much info on how to tweak it.. thanks for your great videos.

    • @OH8STN
      @OH8STN  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mike the owner's manual has a section on adjusting the transmit audio and reception audio. To treat the transmitted you need to adjust the transmit pot on the Wolphilink, well you have your ALC meter showing on your rig. Then you can adjust it perfectly. For reception you need to have one of the apps open which has a waterfall. Slowly turn the receive pot until you have a stream of stations in the waterfall. Then adjust for best reception. There's also the squelch Android psk on the left side of the screen at the bottom. You can stop the random characters from showing up by touching one of the higher bars.
      I hope this helps

    Thanks Julian for your videos. I have just setup my FT817 for WSPR reception. I am finding that when I select a frequency in WSJT-X wspr it selects the correct receiving frequency for a moment ., then switches 2180 hz lower?? Is there another setting to adjust?? 73 Jim

    Quick question.
    I am using an FT-818 with a Signal link and FLDIGI. We use this set up locally on a UHF network to support emergency communications between local shelters, the EOC, etc..
    Recently a few helpful members of my club were helping me fix a transmit issue and as a result I can only transmit NBEMS in packet mode. Previously I was able to send or receive (not both) in FM but since the changes they made it only works in packet mode. I am not sure if this is an option selected in FLDIGI or the radio.
    Other then having to switch radio modes to packet the set up works beautifully. But everyone else is using FM.

    • @OH8STN
      @OH8STN  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem you're having is when you want to transmit data with the 818, assuming the signalink is connecting to the back data part of your radio, you should do so with the radio in packet mode. If you want to use other modes for example on HF, use DIG digital mode. The only time you would use FM as the mode for data Communications is if your signalink was connected to your mic connector, which is a bad thing. So packet mode for FM data. DIG mode, for all other data. They are two different pins on the data port of your radio.

      @@OH8STN Much appreciation, some folks are telling me that using packet is wrong (trust me in no way am I arguing with you) and the guys who made the switch for me on my gear without exactly explaining what they did called it a workaround from a video they looked up. Yesterday it worked perfectly for me during an exercise; like it was intended to function that way (which obviously it is).
      Yes I have the Signal link plugged into the data port in the back of the radio. I clearly see the configuration distinction you made regarding if the Signal link is plugged into the MIC port instead.
      I appreciate the precise and efficient explanation, I like my processes to be clearly documented and repeatable. This is all a bit more than a hobby to me.
      Now that I have this working in UHF/VHF, my next hurdle is make it work in HF and DIG.
      Again thank you.
      73

    • @OH8STN
      @OH8STN  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't mind if you're arguing :-) hey just so you know packet or PKT & DIG are just the names used to distinguish packet for FM data, digital for SSB data on the 818. That's where the confusion is coming from. I also have one little piece of advice for you. Don't let some fool mess with your gear. I suspect you understand that already :-) ;-) if it was working perfectly yesterday, I would put it back the way it was. The fact that you're asking questions means you're a step ahead of those knuckleheads. :-)

      I think I made a video on this but I don't remember. If you're doing digital modes like APRS with the kantronics on FM, the radio should be in packet mode. If you're doing modes like psk, js8, ft8, ... use dig mode.

    Love your videos. Question, I'm purchasing FT YEASU 891 next month. I would like to power this with a battery. (I'll be low on $$ after the radio ). I have seen your video on the LiFePo power source you made, that will be a later project. Can you recommend a Short term Battery so I can get on air for the least cost? I will be running the rig at 25W or lower...just looking for a short term solution. Thanks David KA1HEU 73

      This will be my 1st HF rig. my budget is $630 for the radio and $150 max for the power..
      I plan on building the LiFePo pack from your excellent video..That will be some time this summer.
      (I'm Retired living on SS LOL..) I will be using this as a base initially. Then after building your LiFePo Batter system I'll be doing some backpacking .
      Thanks For your sugestions

      +df2486 hi David I agree with my buddy who commented on your original comment. You have two choices for the radio power. A desktop power supply should be your first purchase with the radio, if you're going to use it from home. When you're ready to operate the radio out in the field, go ahead and build my battery pack project, or get yourself a ready-made LiFePO4 pack. Don't try to save money on the power supply. Good clean power should be the priority and still come in under your budget.

    Hi Julian, I hope you’re well? I’ve just got a 817 and trying to get JS8CALL to work, I can hear stations and see their conversations, however when I TX CQ, no one seems to be ‘hearing’ me.
    I’m convinced it’s ‘operator error’ on my part or I’ve got a setting wrong in the radio/program, as I’ve used the same setup on the RaDAR challenge Saturday gone and I was getting contacts as far away as 1600 miles.......any help/advice would be greatly received, 73.........Paul

    • @OH8STN
      @OH8STN  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm just heading to bed but try this Paul. Most common mistake we make is putting the radio in USB mode rather than digital. Having the radio and USB mode will replicate the symptoms you described perfectly. Try DIG. I also have a couple of videos and setting up the Wolphilink with 817. Naturally the interface is different but the settings on the 817 are identical.
