I paused this video midway and started scanning the 20m band when I heard a POTA station calling out of CA. Made contact then looked the callsign up and it was WC0O that made the video I was watching! What a crazy coincidence!

great video, you cleared up some items for me as I am a fresh ham KO4YIU, I got this radio at the start of the pandemic, and made it my goal to get licensed. Thank you again

Hi Frank, thanks so much for this video, I bought one just before they announced it's production end and haven't had time to really learn it yet. Your video will be very useful. I'm off to watch your video on the IC 7300, another classic which I bought and is waiting for me to have time to play radios. Thanks again. 👍

Did I hear you say it was a FT-818 then 2017 version?
It would be FT817 at that time.

Hi Frank. I have a question but first want to thank you for all the work you put into making these extremely helpful videos. I have a Yaesu FT-710 and I am working it “portable in my backyard” using battery power. I have it connected❤ to a Wolf River Coils whip antenna. I have Parkinson’s Disease so it takes my brain longer to figure things out. I’ve checked the manual but can’t figure out why I have SO much static coming out of the radio. If I turn the RF Gain/Squelch knob to the left I get rid of the noise but the SWR meter shows a huge increase and I hear no signals. I have the WRC antenna coil mounted off the ground on a wood post and I use 6 radials. Does the antenna need to be “grounded” , i.e. do I need to put it in the metal tripod or am I missing a setting on the FT-710? Thank you for any advice you can provide. I live on a ranch in the Oregon high desert and there are no Elmer’s to call. Thanks again for all the time you take to make these great videos! Jim K7NJL

Static can come from almost everywhere especially the atmosphere. But, many times to lower my SWR and some noise I place a choke on the coax cable at the base of the antenna. I've noticed on vertical antennas, it's best to place a choke on the coax at the base of the antenna not at the base of the radio. What that prevents is a common mode current that can come up from the coax to the antenna. You might want to watch the following video to get a sense of what is going on th-cam.com/video/ExUkjhcCr3Y/w-d-xo.html. Good luck, tell us if that worked. -73

The thing you don't know about the ft818, what I have found out, M7HIJ. Run a 6mm Earthbond wire vertical direct into the feed of an antenna, but don't touch the outside earth. Connect the other side to the top of a wonder wand tunner, make sure your radio is set to the rear antenna, use your coax that is connected to your outside antenna, fit this to your BNC connection at the front, this is then your counterpoise wire. At the rear of your radio run a 31ft 6mm ground wire. The tunner, will tune your radio flat btm swr, I've spoken to Russia on a signal 7/8 BRAZIL POORTO RECO. NEATHERLANDS 8/9

It's a great little shack-in-the-box, but I cannot believe that Yaesu did not fix the battery discharge problem or have a Li-ion batteries. Plus, it's not really designed to have the internal batteries connected and disconnected to mitigate the problem. :(

Too bad the 818 has been discontinued and parts/supplies are unavailable.

Parts and supplies are available to cover the 3-year warranty on final batch models - which is why I bought one.

sad that yaesu has this problem of stopping production of radios that are that good. and not having better units to replace them with. like fix a couple issues with the ft 818 and call it ft819. and such with a couple "other" radios in there past line.

    • @JibbarJabbar
      @JibbarJabbar ปีที่แล้ว

@@larryjanson4011 A large ham retailer explained that when the production of a model drops below a certain figure, that model is no longer economically viable. It was the same problem with the FT450D. A great affordable radio! But anyone who ever wanted one already had one.
Whatever replacement Yaesu come up with (assuming they even do?), it won't be as rugged as the 818, it'll be SDR based, and it'll be cheaper than the 705 (but still probanly around $1,000).

I just bit the bullet and ordered one brand new from eBay. I’ve wanted one for a couple years. I suppose it was time.

    • @JibbarJabbar

@@benc5464 Look at VK3YE TH-cam channel for ideas on antenna and battery solutions.
I also bought an FT891 thinking that it would be a better rig - it is for static mobile, but it really isn't for portable/on foot. Also, I prefer the tiny size and weight (and build quality) of the 818 - but it needs an efficient half-wave size antenna to really fly. Anything less can be quiite frustrating.
An 818 at 6 Watts with an end-fed halfwave has the same performance as an 891 at 60 watts with an AMPRO whip - but the 818 uses 3 times less current on RX, and a massive 7 times less current on TX!
I use a Spiderbeam 7 23ft pole (1kg) with Widebander Wire MK3 antenna (about 300g including the supplied 40ft wire), and for VHF SSB I use a Diamond RH-205 BNC telescopic whip. I worked England to Holland and also into Northern Ireland from a local hilltop on 2 meters a couple of years ago, when we had some good tropo propagation. Brilliant DX fun to be had even up at 144.300MHz, on foot with the built-in battery and a 4ft telescopic whip!
The range on HF (usually 10-20 meters) with the pole & wire is a steady 500-2k miles under typical conditions. If the propogation Gods smile down on me anything can happen! UK to Brazil on 2.5 watts! Enjoy.
