  • Northern Sky was an IT Module Track dated back in the nineties. The composer's name is Chris Jarvis. Northern sky belongs to my personal, all-time Top10. It's a brilliant piece of music from a very talented musician.

    This should have been on an electronic album of various artists. It's been on my regular listening list for a long time now. I still never fails to move me. Absolutely inspired and brilliant!

    I was nostalgic and poking through my old MOD and MIDI files. Lo and behold, Northern Sky, hands down my favorite track. Preserved here on TH-cam, too. Fantastic!

    Thumbs up for the comparison with Vangelis.
    And about Chris's music, I don't know much of it, but the one track I do know - Blue Flame (that came as a demo track for Impulse Tracker) is just a timeless classic. One of my favourite pieces of music of all time, not only in the MOD scene.

    True enough. I tend to forget that Vangelis is so old now. :P It happens as you get older, right? Just lose track of time. I don't mean to compare them, I just mean in particular cases I'd go for Chris' music over Vangelis when I have a playlist going.

    I am glad Chris is ok. Unfortunatelly the world, most of the time, loves the trash Music Industry produces and does not give a damn for something really genuine and good like Chri's music.... And I think instrumental music nowadays is very low profile except you are Vangelis or a musician that composes scores for films like Zimmerman, Horner etc

      You are just stuck in your MOD-music generation. We all are. Every generation gets stuck with the music they grew up with.
      Nothing to do with music industry.
      Trust me, there are millions of people that would consider this piece of music trash and for variety of very valid and objective reasons. To each their own.

  • @Seiaeka
    @Seiaeka 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I remember that one Tracker file that someone made of the Bladerunner theme that would crash my 486 because it used max channels. Man I was sure I still had it somewhere.

    Unfortunately, Chris said he doesn't do music anymore. Maybe in the future he'll get back into it if he sees people interested? he was this good when the tech was "ok", so I think he'd be amazeballs now. XD (and yes, I got a hold of him).

      This is Impulse Tracker. Tech was more than just "ok" in IT era.

      Oh cool, It's funny I never heard him talk about anyone asking whether he still makes music. Maybe he just didn't tell me Also he said he doesn't plan on making/releasing anymore music which sucks

      @@CrustyArcade Oh cool. Well, I'd emailed him asking permission to use his music in a series I did a long time ago (no longer available), and wondered if he'd ever made any more music. I was sad to learn he'd given up making more. I guess it wasn't an event worth mentioning. I hope he's doing well after all these years.

    Vangelis comes from another music age. He was well ahead of his time and his music still sounds modern and fresh. His tracks are exceptionally melodic just like Chris's. Unlike Chris, he made full soundtracks, complete music compositions and his main occupation is music. So, really, is not just to compare them...

    • @theeltea
      @theeltea 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Seriously, I only care for Vangelis' Blade Runner, everything else is borderline boring for me and for most people I know.

    A friend of mine, musician, strives everything be up to date. He has the latest and greatest hardware with the latest and greatest software (Cubase, software synths, many giga of samples, etc) but compared to this, his music fails in every single way.
    Most of all it's pure talent that shines here but we must not underestimate the power of Impulse Tracker and the genious of its creator. It run under DOS on a lowly 486 and the artists who used it produced quality tracks like northern star...

    Impulse Tracker and FastTracker are both extremely powerful formats. The piano instrument used here is compiled of 8 separate samples across the tonal scale and then mapped to appropriate frequency ranges so it sounds clean.
    You can download these original files and load them up in a tracker to see how they are made. With a little practice and a decent selection of songs for samples, you can easily make your own tune!

    • @theeltea
      @theeltea 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I fail to see the reason to write in Impulse these days. For vintage authenticity you should either go back in time to more primitive trackers or already go modern with Renoise.

    Well, personally, I think Chris' music is far better than Vangelis. I mean, I love Vangelis--he nailed the Cosmos series dead on, but I think Chris' suff has more life somehow.

    Wow, I think that's the fastest response I've ever gotten on TH-cam. XD Thanks for the answer. I hope to use my tracking skills to hunt him down and ask him. I'd really like to try popularize his music by using them on Minecraft vids. It's a pretty big community and the style of the game sound and graphics suits IT music so well.
