If anyone is still wonering, those yellow wing things, pick one up and don't kill an enemy while you're holding it. The next one that appears will have a symbol on it and look kind of red, every enemy you kill with your normal shot while holding it will be a power up item

I think it's the floating red item he grabs. Turns all bonus items into power ups... but that's just my guess
