It might be obvious, but I only just realised that I think part of Randyls scorn for Brienne is in part due to how Sam wasn't the heir he wanted him to be. Imagine, your firstborn son is a simpering coward and could never wield your ancestral sword, and this maid is out and about in armour, brave as any knight. I don't really know how it could happen, but a meeting between Sam and Brienne would be very interesting. Also, David, first time commenter, long time listener, love your work! Your voicework is making me confident in actually trying voices when running tabletop RPG's. Any tips for a novice voice actor?
Thanks so much for listening! And I love your thoughts on Randyll hating Brienne for a reason that's even less sympathetic than the surface text might indicate. That guy really is a piece of work. As far as being confident doing silly voices and accents? Well, someone recently commented on another chapter that they liked my stuff in general, but thought a specific choice was "cringe," to which I replied "if I was worried about being cringe, none of these recordings would exist." And I think that's a key for an amateur performing for their friends, to be willing to dive in, chew the scenery, have fun, and embrace it being silly and ridiculous sometimes. I play DnD with a regular group, and I'm always cheering for our current DM when he does character work and voices, and giving him compliments and encouragement when he anxiously says stuff like "Oh I messed up that voice" and stuff. Confidence is easy when you let yourself have fun, and when your players see how enthusiastically you're having fun, it will project that confidence and they'll not only get a kick out of your performance, they'll enjoy the game so much more. I'm not qualified to really give more technical advice, but one thing I did a lot when thinking through how to record dialogue from specific characters, particularly ones with larger than life voices, was try to incorporate distinctive, consistent ways of saying certain words and phrases. Strong Belwas always bellows his name when he refers to himself in the third person. Tywin says "Tyrion" in a specific, clipped way with a fairly consistent intonation. Kraznys Mo nakloz says "Unsulled" with a specific slimy emphasis on "SULLIED." Admittedly, idk if that really made an impact with listeners, but I think it made my performance better, and I think it makes the voices feel more like they belong to a character as opposed to just being "an accent."

I like doing two or three chapters a day when I can, but that might end up happening less frequently here and with Dance because the chapters are generally much longer than the first three volumes and it's more work to record them. Prose and dialogue are increasingly complicated too, I'm finding; this book is like half monologues, and my voice can only take so much before it stops working!

Randyll Tarly is just like Lord Tywin but somewhat nicer and more honourable. He would never cause the Red Wedding, yet he might wanna kill his own son.
I dont know i think he's simply a disciplined commander and expert soldier. He keeps his men in line and punishes them when they commit crimes yeah but he also in the same conversation told brienne she deserves to get raped (not to mention all the weird punishments he gave samwell before threatening to kill him) I think he's just a classic example of a real cunt thats good at his job
@@IngTomT Why would he?By joining the freys he removed a major threat and got an ally.Freys caused the red wedding and tywin just had a hand in it.If tywin hadn't allied with the freys,red wedding would have happened anyways.

Being regarded as in revolt against the Crown, which just defeated Stannis after an alliance with Highgarden. It's also implied that Rob was given an aphrodisiac by the Westerlings, who wouldn't act without Tywin's authority.
Lord randyll.... is not a just man. Edward and stannis are just men. Ramdyll is a cruel man. Perhaps not a sadist, but the punishment he gives to these people is not justice. Truthfully, though, I am not sure what he is. Cruelty, more often than not, but perhaps also stupidity. He does not see the value in his own son, so to try and change him, he punishes and humiliates him, which only turned him into a "coward" (I won't call Sam that. He is more brave than most). And the cruel words towards Brianne here go beyond just gender roles and expectations. He does not recognize her for what she is. Randyl is stupid in the way he is stuck in thinking the world should be a certain way, and his way is cruel and painful more often than not, as well as not at all how their world actually is. I think he will die more painfully and afraid than most in the end

If you read or hear the brienne chapters in a row, you really notice the constent question about Sansa. I like the chapters, but have to lol every time.

I made this decision back when I was recording Clash because I wanted to emphasize how awkward, masculine, and out-of-place Brienne is, and had already utilized a few different American accents before she showed up. Sorry that's not to your liking but that's what I was thinking about!

@@DavidReadsASoIaF ahh...and therein lis the problem.....i dont think anyone in all the 7 kingdoms or across the narrow sea was meant to have american accents. well its not how i imagined anyway. its loosely based on the wars of the roses and in england the aristocracy dont use local accents. from lands end to john o groats the aristocracy have their own way of speaking. queens english its called. its like a national dialect for for toffs. but plz dont get me wrong, i have really enjoyed listening to you read this and i hope you do more. it would be great if you did fire and blood after youve finished the main stories. and if you get stuck after that, ive got plenty of suggestions
