“Do you really think we need to put in all this effort into a split diopter scene? I mean no body would notice it.”
“One person will notice it.”
They’re not trying to make people notice it. They’re just trying to affect you subconciously as a viewer.
"Shit we rendered this scene with too shallow of a depth of field and only the spork is in focus"
"It's okay. Just re-render the left half of the frame and mask them together. Nobody's gonna notice"
Later... This video
There actually isn't that much effort needed for one of these shots, I hope we see it more in the future!
Actually...the real magic is that no one would notice it. The brain would be processing the effect with the viewer not even realizing its impact. So yeah, that's the reason to "put in all this effort". ;)
Omg I was the 1k like
*Incredibles 2:* Look at these arm hairs. You can't get more realistic than that!
*Toy Story 4:* Hold my virtual camera lens...
When it comes to animated movies I dont walk in expecting tons of realism as animation is not meant to reflect real life but tell a story
@@jammygamer8961 and have a beautiful animation
@@jammygamer8961 You're right. An animated film doesn't have to look realistic, but that does not mean that realism hurts the film either. Toy Story 4 doesn't try to be photorealistic. The humans are still very stylized. I would call the style of Toy Story 4 "Reality, but better". ^^
Stealing this comment
*Toy Story 4:* _no wait you’re holding it wrong, you’re gonna smudge it_
"God I hate CG it's so sterile and fake, its nowhere near as detailed as 2D animation."
Pixar- hold my dioptor shot
CG is not sterile, but it's also not 2D. For better or worse CG has (and by that I mean: the trend is) to look more like a "live action movie" where fantastical things can happen while 2D can have more stylistic liberties.
J. Az. Woods I’d like to bring up into the spiderverse as a counterpoint
@@felixrogers9569 Good point! Spiderverse definitely takes creative freedom in their all the animation, even adding 2D in some portions (wait a...). Spiderverse is an amazing CG film but sadly it's an exception, not the rule.
But to that you may answer that toystory 4 is _also_ an exception with how much detail they put in, when most 3d films compare to Source film maker animations, and not professionally shot films.
I guess I do have a personal bias in the subject, oh well.
yeah, I'm super biased toward 2D animation, I always prefer it, so much so I refuse to watch new Disney princess movies. If I do watch them, you can bet I'm gonna insult the animation at least oncr., But I gotta admit, the toy story animation looks absolutely beautiful, you can see how much effort they put into it and hating on that just feels mean.
Klaus : hold my pencil .paper and crayon
4:00 I can’t get over how realistic that cat looks, when I saw the movie at first I thought they recorded a real life cat!
That's pixart , they are pros .
same here. the cat, and the difference between Bo's sheen and Woody's plastic had me floored
Man, we got so far from the dog in the first toy story.
Sugar2000galaxy We got so far with the design of Andy as well! After watching Toy Story 1 after seeing some of the scenes from Andy’s childhood in Toy Story 4 during the beginning, you can see an amazing difference between how realistic he looks and how much better he looks as well.
In Toy Story 1, you can see how simplistic Andy looks in general without much hair, clothes, skin, eyes and lighting detail as well. Toy Story 4 has a lot more attention on the way he looks overall.
Of course, the difference is all because of the 3D animation processes and such they use. They’ve come a long way since 25 years ago, so you can’t blame Toy Story 1 for not having as much attention to detail as some of the newer animations. Though, Toy Story 1 was probably by far the best animated film of its time back then.
Anyways, kudos to the team and everyone who had their part in contributing to this film. I’m not so much for the story, but the visual design is amazing and wonderful.
Wait.. that cat is not real?!

From an engineering standpoint, that fair ground is astounding. They literally created a fully functional, fully detailed, fully living fair ground down to every motor in every ride, every blade of grass on the field and down to every single person seen or unseen in the entire area. Or, to put it another way, THEY LITERALLY MADE A REALITY! I cannot WAIT for VR movies. Where it has the story going on, but you can look around too.
No they didn't. You have no idea how 3d actually works do you?
The map was done with 100% detail fidelity, but I don't think they had the entire 'npcs' so to speak animated all the time, only where we can see them.
@@choo_choo_ He's an engineering student, I'm pretty sure he understands. Along with the fact, 3D is just giving depth and details to the drawings or well... frames. He's mentioning about how realistic each animation is getting every time. With how it's being developed, it makes it seem like it's a whole new world or a reality.

When you do something well, people won't realize you did anything at all.
well... except for competitions, sex and violence.
I think you meant when you do something right.
Design is like this too. It's a shame that because of this rule, the people working in that industry are taken that much more for granted.
but you can see that it's good you may not know why exactly but the image looks good
Is this why nobody's noticed the string of mutilated corpses I've been leaving for the past few months now?
I've had a theory that part of the reason people reject 3D animation as if they're cartoons is partially because we've grown with 2D cartoons all our lives. For example: If someone wants to make 3D characters for a Japanese Anime look like their 2D hand drawn version, everything from lighting, line weight, and even timing/smoothness needs to be adjusted. So even though you can 3D animate a character with sweeping sleek 60/120 fps, it'll "look" wrong because it's almost "too perfect." So reverting to 24 fps and classic 2D animation techniques becomes important to create the illusion. Did you know many of Naruto's animations are done with 3D characters? They've just gotten so darn good at hiding/convincing you it's still 2D.
The quality of animation and the progress made from Toy Story 1 to 4 is outstanding. Pixar always had great stories but they have seriously upped their animation in recent years. Soul's R&B atmosphere of New York City is also spectacular as hell.
I love how on the Toy Story movies, they use cameras at the size and proportion of the toys. But when they are filming humans handling toys, they use "normal" sized cameras and suddenly the toy characters just become plastic toys.

@@bellabyers2929 Its realistic. Someone else won't have the same connection you did with a toy you once had, especially not a young child who is already fickle enough with their attachment and hasn't lived long enough to even understand being sentimental.

Toy Story 4 is my favorite movie of this year hands down! That ending was intensely emotional and knowing this even makes me appreciate it even more
This is really fascinating, had no idea they used fake camera lenses like that.
id never considered using different lenses to portray different character's personalities before!
Every studio and almost every movie does this, Stellvia. Has nothing to do with hookers and blow and who has that in their budget. Some of the all time great films have that in their budget and still had different lenses.
To the OP, actually, very few movies stick to only one lens. A recent example would be Call Me By Your Name, which used a 35MM lens for its entirety.
Being a Layout Artist in charge of the cg camera for feature animated films, I want to say thank you for such a brilliant video about and complimenting our line of work!
As an aspiring cartoonist, layout animation is basically the same thing as cinematography in live action film except animation can do what live-action couldn't. So layout artists are responsible for camera angles, paths, lighting, character pose, and shading. For short films, the layout was responsible by the directors.
What an awesome job you have!
Cool works!
I'm a videographer and photographer and I never even would have thought of something like this, but as soon as I saw it in action I was blown away. This is the coolest thing ever.
Dude, you had me. I didn't even THINK about the fact you're talking about a CARTOON until you said it out loud!
This video not only expresses how great cinematography can be insightful storytelling but casually informs people of the technical decisions in filmmaking. Furthermore, I enjoyed the elegant details in your editing, if it's either masking the right side of the split diopter shot, to playoff "Forky's" dialogue as part of a joke or the simple cut to the cat with beautifully shaped specular highlights flowing down its body as you bring up the cinematographers use of light. I enjoyed the experience, such a well-crafted video.

This was a fascinating look at this concept. I like how in "digital perfection" it is forcing imperfections into it that things become more...real.
I can't wait for films to drop HD and intentionally add static and grain on purpose
@@donaldsterling1631 Aren't they doing that already? I mean, not the big movies (not 100% sure though), but like people working with cinematography do it all the time. Obviously not to the entire movie, but to certain parts. Usually the backstory, flashbacks, narration of a story (although most of the time that uses flat lineless animation or the like), or the ending.

Thank you for helping regular viewers as me notice these outstanding details!!
I think they simply wanted the left character stand out through shallow depth of field. This would, however, make the right character be blurry. That's why they rendered the whole thing a second time and combined the shots. This technique is actually less surprising than the older diopter technique. I didn't know that this existed.

I imagine that this was intended as an Easter-egg in this video, but I'm loving it as a little detail in the film:
The shot of Beau and Woody hugging at the end of the film, after Woody has decided to embrace the same change Beau has, simulates the use of an anamorphic lens, rather than Woody's usual spherical lens
