      I totally agree! This is the first "large format" console that wasn't 100K...LOL I know Audient makes something as well but I would choose and SSL over and Audient every time

    Congrats on the new desk. Looks great! Running similar hybrid setup with x16s and audient 8024. Im glad to see a channel more towards the guys that still like the analog workflow.

    I have an SSL 4056 G - 48 mono faders - 8 stereo faders - My buckets are 8 stereo far left - 1-24 left of center - 25-48 right of center.
    Here is my usual setup coming out of Pro Tools
    1-2 - Drum Parallel
    3-4 - Percussion/Loops/Etc.
    5 - Hat
    6 - Sn Sample/Kick Sample
    7-8 - Rooms - ITB drum reverb is busses here along with stereo room samples
    9 - Kick
    10 - Snare
    11-12 - Toms
    13-14 - Overheads
    15 - Bass
    16 - Bass O/D or Center Guitar (Mostly Center Guitar)
    17-18 - Gtrs 1
    19-20 - Gtrs 2
    21-22 - Gtrs 3
    23-24 - Gtrs 4
    25 - Lead Vox
    26 - Lead Vox DBL
    27 -28 - BKV 1
    29-30 - BKV 2
    31-32 - Lead Vocal FX from Pro Tools
    33-48 - Extra BKVs - Keyboards and other misc.
    I mostly fit my sessions on 1-32 and rarely go past 33. Easier session management that way. I will use a lot pro tools FX fed from the Auxes and Busses on the SSL .
    1-2 - from my convertors is roughed into one of the 2 track mixes on the center section.
    So many different ways to mix on an analog desk. Always parking tracks in the same place never leaves you guessing and you don't have to label your analog faders.
    One big note: The Origin is aimed to react more like a 4000. The beauty of a 4000 is the level at which you hit the input channels of the desk from the DAW. Automating in the DAW depending on the channel (Kick, Snare, Bass) will cause the sound of that channel to move from the sweet spot of the desk. You will learn that point is.

    @15:30 Regarding the Parallel and FX busses - What group of stems would these go to?
    I've been doing a hybrid setup that I haven't seen many others discuss.
    I have a MOTU interface feeding a Tonelux OTB mixer.
    I have 8 stereo groups feeding the OTB mixer (Drums, Bass, Vox, BG, Gtr, Lead, Synth, FX).
    Those 8 groups get summed to my 500 series SSL G-Comp.
    I then send that back into my DAW and monitor that input for everything (scratch tracks, overdubs, mixing).
    This workflow adds another level of A/D conversion which inherently means more latency - so I feed the artist's Headphone Monitor system from the same 8 stereo groups coming from my DAW. Which gives them the audio with 1 less conversion - and also lets them change their personal mix on the fly.

    Big congrats on the SSL!! I have been drooling over the Neve Genesys Black for a few years now, but according to my bank account I can only afford a free picture of it lol. Thank you so much for this great video! I have been mixing hybrid through analog summing and now thinking of investing in the Origin. I would like to ask in regards to your setup, what is your recall process? Also would you be able to setup the console channels by using I/O plugin (in/out with each origin channel) rather than hard output each DAW channel to the desk? I use Logic which has the utility (I/O) plugin feature, I use this method when running my outboard gear onto channels I need them. Was thinking if you can do the same or get the same results routing the console that way.

    • @MixingMusicAnalog
      @MixingMusicAnalog  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I dont use any I/O plugins so I cant help you with that. As for recall, I rarely need to do them. I did an entire video on that subject. Look at my archives

    It's a way different work flow. I thought about doing it with some old mackie's cause thier way less expensive. Your set up is a beast!

  • @gavmurray7398
    @gavmurray7398 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    so many ways to set this up it does my head in just thinking about it haha. one issue i see with this method is that you will be doing all your automation moves in the daw on the daw output faders so they will be pre fade automation moves before it hits your analogue gear which is going to create nightmares with your outboard gear gain staging.. compression thresholds etc. love watching he journey though!

    • @MixingMusicAnalog
      @MixingMusicAnalog  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True, but I usually dont do "wild" automation moves. They are usually slight in nature its not going to change the gain staging that much at all but I hear your point

  • @DavidSJ_DAP

    One thing to keep in mind when building a template in Studio One is that stereo pairs can only come out on odd-even pairs...in other words you can route a stereo pair on 5-6 but NOT on 6-7...this makes careful planning critical to getting a workable template layout...

  • @anthemmakersmusic
    @anthemmakersmusic 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Its a lot of options to think about. Did you lose or gain input output from the switch?

  • @SoundStudio412
    @SoundStudio412 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Cool video.
    @ 14:18 - in the discussion of the output from your interface into the Origin - Would it make sense to send the Toms as a Stereo Pair like the OH's?
    Then there is no need to change the setup regardless of how many Toms are being mixed in the DAW?
    EDIT - just got to @ 19:00 where you discuss this.

    The desk suits you, sir! Using two Apollo 16 units is the route I'll be taking in the next few weeks when I upgrade from PT10 HD. The only thing I've thought is maybe getting another 16 so you can route back into the computer from the buses to use plug-ins on the stereo group stems but it does add extra cost. I noticed you wired the Apollo outputs to the channel line ins. Is this on purpose so you always have access to the drive function rather than using a patchbay?

    • @MixingMusicAnalog
      @MixingMusicAnalog  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, we used the Channel inserts so we can utilize the "drive" circuit of the preamp

    • @CatalystStudiosUK
      @CatalystStudiosUK 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MixingMusicAnalog I think I made a mistake writing 'ins" because I meant 'inputs', so - 'channel line inputs'. I have everything going to a patchbay and the outputs from the DAW are normalled to the 'monitor inputs' or 'long fader'. If you are going to be mainly mixing then having access to the 'drive' function without using a patch lead makes sense. Keep up the good work! Cheers.

    This is a fantastic video. Loving this journey. I have one question though - how will you go about hybrid mixing here between S1 and the SSL? If, for example, you EQ on the board and then add a compressor on S1 won't that compressor always be before the SSL EQ? i.e. what gets sent out of S1 is what the SSL hears. Or are you going to rely on outboard processing as Inserts on the SSL?

    • @MixingMusicAnalog
      @MixingMusicAnalog  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, in your example, the compressor would come before the eQ on the console. I am typically an compressor then EQ guy anyway so that does not bother me too much.

    • @highpeakrecordings
      @highpeakrecordings 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MixingMusicAnalog That's useful then. I'm know trying to work out (given I'm a corrective EQ>Compressor type of person) how this would be possible. Head hurts now (and wasting brain energy given I don't own a console!)

    • @foresthillstudio
      @foresthillstudio 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am using a UC1 for Dynamics and EQ in the box... then dumped back to the console for fader mixing. OR.. If you want to go further, you can do fader moves in the box and use the 0 dB buttons on the console too. THIS combination allows for TOTAL RECALL of all settings as you are not using the console Fader, EQ and Dyn knob settings... AND YES, SSL's Native Channel Strip DOES sound as good as the Origin Console's Dynamics and EQ.... All the Analog Goodness without ANY recall settings to make.... The session come back as you left it simply by loading the Studio One song.

    In reference to your comping when you have more tracks statement. I’ve never mixed on a console but I’m looking into starting tracking and mixing on a 32 track console. Other than the pain of having to go into the software to reroute everything, if using a smaller board, would it be worth it to try to mix say the drums. Print them, then use that print track on a single or 2 probably for the stereo effect, then move forward from there? I understand that you are printing stereo stems in groups for recall purposes but would this be a viable option for smaller mixing consoles? P.S. asking for a friend! Haha

    • @MixingMusicAnalog
      @MixingMusicAnalog  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Certainly, that is one way to do it. You can run all of your groups of instruments through the mixer then back into your DAW and then mix from there. Yes, its more work for sure and depending on the mixer it may or may not be wroth all the extra hassle. It depend on the sound.
