    Fascinating video, pleased I stumbled across it- think I did because I also stumbled across the Holy Island Causeway at Lindisfarne recently, which has a similar causeway, albeit more regular occurrences of being flooded. Seems a lovely part of the country and so quaint and charming for sure- and what a great quirk having a road that goes under the water on certain king tides! If I ever make it to your side of the world, will certainly visit this cool little town. Thanks for opening my eyes to it :) Like the stand up board too- seems light and portable!

      Thanks appreciate it! 🙌🏼 Oh yes I know Holy Island I visited a few years ago! Yes it’s certainly quirky! There’s ongoing debates to raise the road height but it always gets rejected by locals! Yeh it’s unique and defo worth a visit if you’re local. Also great sea food! No worries glad you liked it! 🙌🏼🌊🚙

    Love going to the island. Never seen it that high before, seen a car or two stuck (broke down) after high tides & seen it high down by the jetty.

    This is why I do not like living on this island and want to get off it as soon as possible.

    • @MorewithMat
      @MorewithMat  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I dont blame you. I grew up only 10 minutes from the island but the high tide covering the strood has put me off ever wanting to actually live there. Doesn't cover it all the time but I just know it would catch me out when needing to do something really important 😂🌊

    • @ben.taylor
      @ben.taylor 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MorewithMat It doesn't catch me out that much as I work on the island as well. Once I get a good enough job inland I can move out of this island for good.
      Mersea is just one big retirement home, no place for me seeking opportunities in life at the age of 17. Also you say you're only ten minutes from the island, I assume you mean Peldon? Abberton maybe, if you drive fast enough..?

    • @ben.taylor
      @ben.taylor ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MorewithMat Oh it's not the living standards, it's the island itself. It gets boring with nothing to do after a few years of living here, there's no railway station and of course let's not forget the strood.
      It's an ideal place for people who wanna live somewhere that's calm, quiet and peaceful. But I'm more of a "big city" kind of guy. And to be raised on an island like this, well.. As I said, it's essentially just a retirement home that takes up the space of an island.

  • @ANDREWLEONARDSMITH
    @ANDREWLEONARDSMITH ปีที่แล้ว +1

    All this dangerous nonsense could easily be consigned to history by raising the level of the road above the highest tide level so it does not flood . The other alternative is to build a bridge across as the RNLI & the Coastguard must be absolutely fed up with picking up the pieces from these idiots who get into difficulty & would surely support the building of a safe permanent crossing that does not flood with the tide as in the event of an emergency how do the emergency services acess this dangerous location at high tide? A safe permanent crossing could mean the difference between life & death.

    • @MorewithMat
      @MorewithMat  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All valid points and something that has had ongoing discussions for many years. As far as I'm aware, Mersea locals are generally against increasing the height of the road as it spoils the quirk and charm of the island (it is quite unique). In terms of emergencies, the water only actually covers the road a handful of days a month so the vast majority of the time it does not cause an issue. I guess air ambulance is your best bet if needed. I also think Colchester fire service send fire trucks to the island during times of high tide in case there is an emergency

    • @porcupine460
      @porcupine460 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@MorewithMat agreed! Mersea fire station is always on hand to help as is RNLI Mersea Island. There are enough warning signs on the approach both ways and there are water depth markers to warn drivers of how deep the water can get. The cost of such a crossing would also probably bankrupt Colchester City Council within hours of starting work on it!
