  • This version of Your Song made my jaw drop. By this time in 2003, Elton started to change his singing style to have a more punchy baritone sound to his vocal delivery. In many of his performances during this time period, he would start to do flourishes at ends of notes/lines, and starting to deliver phrasing with more staccato (shortened duration of notes) that would continue to modern day performances. However, at this point Elton still had great vocal flexibility and he had no fear of holding out sustains with softness, power, or both (just like previous eras).
What makes this version unique is that it blends the modern staccato style that could be heard in modern times with the flexibility and sustains that were present in the 90's and 2001, and surprisingly, prime live phrasing on lines such as "How wonderful life is while you're in the world" and even in the final chorus and outro (plus some embellishments in an unexpected line).
The quality isn't great, but this performance certainly is and it needs to be recognized.
    Enjoy!

I agree, this performance makes this song more emotional and touching! although, there was something similar in RSB and in The One tour

Amazing unexpected belting on "anyway the thing is," which hasn't had belting since the early 70s

    4:19 - 4:27 is Monte Carlo 1984 phrasing.
