  • Oblivion is a 2013 scfi action thriller starring Tom Cruise, about one of the last men left on Earth who struggles to piece together his true identity. It's also a really good movie that puts most films of today to shame.

Yeah. All you need to know is the bad guys are there, and they have to end them. I mean, it allows the intelligence of the viewer to assume certain things without explanation - you just figure out on your own that ........SPOILER.......

Too often Hollywood wants to do a backstory on everything when it isn't needed or warranted like the SOLO movie for instance. What I pictured in my mind was far more interesting than the pile of shit film Disney put out. The film reminded me of Omega Man with Charlton Heston. Some people might be put off by the slow pacing of the film but I really enjoyed it.

I watched this 3 times in two days, it's one of those movies that have perfect pace and harmony during each shot and each scene. It impressed me so much that I recommended it to people saying it pays homage to themes from the Matrix and Moon, not ripping them off. Also, look up how they filmed the scenes in the sky tower using practical effects and not CGI, showing how much planning and care went in on this.

@@ressljs I was 37 when it came out, the thing is,I've liked this kind of science fiction all of my life: reading John Wyndham as a child, growing up with Star Wars, Alien,Predator and appreciating movies such as Gataca, Moon, I Am Morher.... I'm not sure why I initially disliked this film....but I do remember that I disliked Morgan Freemans entrance to the film.
Nowadays I hold this film in high regard... a nice post appocolyptic sci fi.

The track “StarWaves” from the OST by M83 perfectly encapsulates everything the movie is, in my opinion. It’s a sweeping, almost haunting score, punctuated by rising moments of hopeful sounding highs interspersed throughout tranquil, thoughtful lows.
Can’t recommend this masterpiece enough, and I’m glad the Drinker hit it with his stamp of approval.

I'm a sci-fi junkie and it's depressing how few and far between truly good sci-fi movies and shows are, especially considering how much amazing source material there is out there. Yet that's also part of my dilemma. I'd love to see more great books on the big screen, but with Hollywood's tendency to dumb down and politicize everything they touch, maybe it's better that I don't live to see my favorites get shit on, I mean, "adapted". I get much more excited when I see animated adaptions, or shorts people created for channels like Dust here on YT.

Ender's game was rather a disappointment.
A shame really, as the Ender series is one of the best Sci Fi stories in my opinion. Extremely thoughtful with complex characters and motives. With twists and turns, friendships, strained families. And strained relationships, mistakes, and successes with truly creative and interesting alien species. That all comes together in truly unique perspectives and story.
It was never going to adapt well to film. Too much is focused on the characters thoughts. They tried though. The result wasn't an outright failure, but it was underwhelming.
Some stories are just meant to remain in words. I wish more people these days were bigger on reading. Movies are great, but they usually don't have the story telling potential of books. Some things are better in a visible movie/show/game form. And some are better in novel form.

Fell in love with this movie first time I watched it. Theres something really special and fulfilling about the story and the atmosphere its overall beautiful. Just recently watched again after learning about Kosinski and Cruise ties between this movie and TG2. Man, like TG2, Oblivion is a gem. I particularly love the entire story-emotional buildup to the line "If we have souls, they are made of the love we share... undimmed by time and bound by death." Just overall a beautiful and badass movie. One followup note, for some reason .. Victoria is sexy as all hell.

my favorite part of the film. The soundtrack played during the leadup to Vicka's death is called "you can't save her" which I find just such a nice subtle nod to her character's tragic personality defect which will never allow Jack to break her out of the Tet's spell, no matter how many clones of Vicka he tries to save. She's always going to "Titan". Such a minor note, but really showed that the people making this cared.

@@mlinscott2 Yes I work in CG, but on the pre-production side. So we layout in 3D the action sequences and play with the shots and camera work to figure out how they want to shoot it on the day, without making big mistakes that cause re-shoots. Some times we get our own ideas in the film (I came up with how the bubbleship does a 180 by flipping upside down, and then rolling laterally) .
