  • The Rock is a classic eample of 1990's Jerry Bruckheimer filmmaking. It might not be high art, but it's a fun, fast paced action movie with a great cast. I miss movies like this.

    When Mason tells his daughter "I'm not an evil man, if you can believe that, then that's a start..." makes him more sympathetic and relatable than any of the "modern characters" we're stuck with nowadays

    • @JamesTobiasStewart
      @JamesTobiasStewart 2 ปีที่แล้ว +57

      Plus the moment Goodspeed covers for Mason in front of his daughter, painting him as willingly cooperating as opposed to them showing up to arrest him is to me extremely important.
      With just a few facial movements Connery conveys how much that gesture means to Mason, he's just met his daughter for the first time and the moment he heard those sirens he was grimly resigned to Jade viewing him as just another criminal... But then Goodspeed makes him a hero, a man working to help the FBI save lives, a man Jade can be proud to have as a father.
      As far as I'm concerned, that moment is when Mason first starts to like Stanley and boy does that prove vital for the missions success.

    My favourite behind the scenes story from this film is when Sean Connery heard Michael Bay was having trouble with the producers so he invited himself along to a meeting and basically told them to stop pissing about and let 'the kid' as he called Bay, do his job, and everyone backed down because that is what you do when Sir Sean tells you to, and so what we got is a great example of what happens when you let directors and actors do their thing without interference from the moneymen.

    • @RolandDeschain1
      @RolandDeschain1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +55

    I think one of my favourite things about The Rock is the antagonist isn't the antagonist "Because evil", Hummel has a set of motivations that could make actually make sense but definitely is not good motivations. I also like how for large part of the film, we're never quite sure if Connery's character is on any side but his own, and that side just happens to coincide with Cage's character, or whether he is actually going to stick his neck out to help anyone but himself.
    It's a reminder for me of how modern film is written for the attention span of a 6 year old; this person evil, this person good, they fight, explosions, good person win, while films like The Rock, with writing for actual adults, is able to achieve more development in it's opening then most modern Action Blockbusters.

    • @kommisar.
      @kommisar. 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hummel was actually a good person deep down but knew he had to do some bad things to innocent people in order to hold the government who betrayed him and his men accountable. This was thoroughly established when he canceled the missile strike and told the men he recruited that his whole plan was a bluff. I also liked how Morse's character still stood by him and upheld the military code (so to speak) when the others mutinied because they knew they weren't going to collect the ransom. They were not one-dimensional, blatantly evil people like we see in so many other military movies.
      Mason similarly seemed to be a good guy caught in the middle of his government's selfish actions. The movie paints him as selfish in that he's only trying to help free the hostages and disarm the missiles because it's his way to freedom, which he then refuses to do when the special ops team is wiped out, but then decides to help Cage anyway even though he realizes the mission is by then almost impossible and the US government is not going to let him go anyway.

      I was a bit disappointed that The Drinker didn't mention Bay at all in this review. This is like the only movie he made that was actually well written and well put together as a movie, rather than an embarrassing mess like Bayformers. I'm assuming it was because he had minimal involvement in the story writing.
      Still, you can see the potential he had here, that he squandered later on. I think that deserves a worthy mention.

The rogue Marines who ambush and kill the Navy Seals are way closer than Soldiers and Sailors are. They’re both under the Department of the Navy, who serve alongside one another on Navy Ships. One of my favorite lines: "I'm not a soldier, Major. The day we took hostages, we became mercenaries. And mercenaries get paid. I want my FUCKING money!"
    Lots of other great actors besides Harris, Cage, etc. William Forsythe, David Morse, Tony Todd, Bokeem Woodbine, John Spencer.

    Hail Drinker!! I saw this when I was still in High School and what stuck out for me was how well the characters were written. I also loved that we find out the only bad guys are the bureaucrats; they made sure the soldiers weren't paid, they did what they could to screw over John Mason and acted like assholes to members of both operations. Cage, Harris, Connery and Biehn were excellent!!

    I LOVE this movie. The Rock is a truly good entertaining fun. You don't really have to suspend your disbelief too much, and at the same time no need to rack you brains to remember the plot or twist and turns.
    I think what really made the movie is because the antogonists is not 2d typical villain but it has some depth to it. And I think what contributed to the depth is because of his loyal henchman. Typically the henchman are one dimensional. But in this movie you can see that it's "a team of antagonists", not one big boss and the rest are just to make him believable to do all these evil things. As deep of a character as Thanos is, you only as Thanos has deep convictions of his principles, his Henchman is blindly following his instructions.

    Drinker does a video on The Rock.
    Me - "It was inevitable."
    Also, a GREAT as the "Prom Queen" line was, to me, the BEST part is when Cage replies with, "Mary WAS the Prom Queen." and Connary smiles & looks IMPRESSED and says "Really?!?"! (as if to say "Wow! Way to go!")
    Wonderful Bonding moment.

    Also worth pointing out that the producers got Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais to add those quips into the script. They also polished Connery's last [unofficial] Bond Never Say Never and I think Connery had a hand in getting them involved in this film too.

    I absolutely love this movie and I'd recommend it to everyone. Great cast, great plot, and some fantastic moments that should go down in movie history forever.
    EDIT: Call me crazy, but I DO look at it as a deep and thoughtful insight into the human condition. Underneath all the bog standard Hollywood action and clever dialogue is a story about a career military man who's watched the men under his command get killed, or even left behind to be killed, for years without a single acknowledgement to their actions and sacrifice, because the government wants to sweep it all under the rug and call it a day. There's a real story in this movie, and I think it's one worth recognizing.

    • @ODST_Parker
      @ODST_Parker 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@elanthys And this guy definitely had a point. I especially love Commander Anderson's appeal to both him and his Marines, reminding them of their duty above all else, despite agreeing with his sentiment. Mason even gets a dig at him later in the movie, and eventually Hummel realizes what he's done.
      The only thing I really don't like are the Marines who are suddenly acting like cutthroat mercenaries. Like, were they really just there for a paycheck?

    I loved how this film makes you think very deeply about what you have always thought of as "good" or "bad". Sometimes, killing a bunch of people is the only "right" thing to do even if it's very difficult to explain to yourself! A very famous American war general once said, "we defeated the wrong enemy" which still to this day makes people reevaluate what we're told is "good" and "bad" and what REALLY happened. Life isn't always black and white! Sometimes there are grey areas that need to be analyzed and understood. This film is perfect at bringing that stuff front and center!!!
