Aztec Vs Mayan Mythology - Whats the Difference?

- In this video we're comparing mythology from two iconic Mesoamerican civilisations, Aztec vs Maya. From the treacherous Mictlan ruled by the Aztec god of the dead, Mictlantecuhtli to the Mayan Mitnal which was presided over by 12 death gods. We have also explained the mythological reasoning behind their rituals of sacrifice.
Learn about the Five Suns in the creation story of the Aztecs and the Maya attempts at creating humans. And of course, we can't forget the flying Serpent god shared by both societies, known as Quetzalcoatl to the Mexica.

I've told ppl for years. A god of war style game with mesoamerican mythology would be awesome
there a game called SMITE with Aztec and Maya gods in it. Chacc, kukulkan, ixchel, Ah puch, and other gods from different mythologies
The fact that both cultures has some Toltec influences in their feathered serpents shoes how sincretic and dinamic religion was for them.
More the influence of empires.
??? All of the mesoamerican civilizations came from the Olmecs, it’s not surprising at all, they have a common root.
@@ericktellez7632nobody said it was surprising, don't get all bunched up for nothing. he just made an amateur observation and that's great
Toltec has Aztec influences better said we dominated.
What do you mean by ‘we dominated’?
These TH-camrs and average people don’t know there’s a difference between Mexica and Aztecs. The tribe that established the empire known as Tenochtitlán were the Mexica and NOT the Aztecs.
Not all Mexicans today are Mexica or Aztecs descendants. The Mexica was one tribe and the Aztecs were 7 different tribes.
The Mexica birthplace was Utah and they received a revelation from their god to go and find their version of the promised land. So the Mexica went south from Utah and on their journey the 7 tribes of the Aztecs followed them.
The Mexica was basically the head tribe of the 7 Aztec tribes.
So yeah not all Mexicans came from these tribes that I mentioned.
So what do you mean by “WE”? Who are you to claim something you have no idea about.
By the way, my great grandfather was a 14 generation removed grandson of Moctezuma II of the Mexica. The last true Emperor of the Mexica.
Imagine your already dead and need to face these colossal obstacles just to find your eternal rest. Thats straight soulsborn game.
How hard must have their lives have been to believe that death was going to be that brutal a journey lol. Must of been tough in Mesoamerica.
It was, and that is perhaps why the Aztecs at least created all that deeply existential poetry. We are taking "to be or not to be" levels of verses here!
Its a religion for soldiers, we have to prove ourselves twice, once in the realm of the living, & twice before the lord of the dead
The Mayans were literally like you have to fight and be judged to earn a place in hell, they legit believed once you die you have to pass all these messed up trails and your reward was straight up Hell lol
Edit:word
It was probably easier than living in Europe with all the peasants, sharing living and pissing quarters with their livestock 🤢
It turns out a lot of ancient religions have the same types of beliefs that when you die you go to Hell which is kinda concerning lol
Idk why there isn't more movies, shows about Mesoamerican mythology. I think it's so interesting.
The 4 eleaments. Fire, air water and jaguar
Mesoamerican Mythology is really cool to read but I feel its equally as underrated. Very good and informative video as always but damn thats some work to do just to get some rest after life. Btw I believe the name of the Iguana that guards the first level of Mictlan is Xochitónal.
4:38 my grandma told me about this myth!! Except she kinda mixed it in with a couple of other things from Catholicism. I could never find the source of the myth she was referencing. She told me as a kid that if I shared my food with my dog, that when I die, my dog would be waiting for me to help me cross the river to get into heaven because it was thankful for how I treated it in life. I always figured she was somehow referring to the river Styx. However, being that we’re from Mexico, it makes a lot more sense that this is the myth she was referring to!
The sacrifices were also used as a way to undermine possible rebellions against the Aztec Empire. The Aztecs used the heads from the sacrificed captured warriors to display them on the Tzompantli, a wall of human heads. When other civilizations came to pay the forced tribute, they had to walk in front of the Tzompantli.
u pulled that right our ur asshole
The Aztecs were NOT the Mexica. Big difference. Get your facts right!

Who will win:
The sun vs 1 million jaguars
I vote 1 million jaggies
Other religions's afterlife: "Be good or go to our hell"
Mesoamerican's after life: "I mean, you kinda have to through a ton of cra.p regardless..."
Man I would pay good money for a souls like mesoamerican game. The mythology is metal af ! Great video
You're not the only one! Thanks for watching
Could you imagine the boss battles?! I'm thinking magical weapons and charms like axes with feathers so the feather makes the axe weigh less so it swings faster. There's a lot one can do.
Hell yeah!
* *south american Miyazaki taking notes* *
Combining Aztec, Mayan, and Incan mythology kind of game would be sick
I created a metal band called Feed The Sun as a reference to human sacrifice the aztecs and Mayans did. We actually have a song called sacrifice out.
Cool i wish more media used this mythology.
You've used "support our troops" instead since it's a sacrifice US - European ancient custom too
well, The mayans (mayans were several groups of people) didn't really do human sacrifice the same way. most of their sacrifices were just the cuts rather than full on flayings and beheadings.
It's like Roman Mythology vs Greek Mythology.
No…
Derp
Thank you very much! Very well done. My family is from the Yucatán area and learned something new.
Very cool! Thanks for watching
Crazy to think their underworld had so many different ecosystems in it from a Caribbean culture 😮

This video was simple and clear , great video btw did you do one on Indian mythology ?
Thanks for watching! Not yet but that's a great idea thank you
@@DarknessandLore can't wait to see more vids from you
The Purepecha next.
Have you done the Incans gods? I would like to watch more of mesoamerican gods and myths
Do a Philippine Mythology. In Philippine mythology, there are many mythological gods, each region having its own. Most of them are nature gods.
Its comfirmed! 4th level of the Aztec underwold is Scandinavia!
Why?
Great video. You were very informative and I am so impressed at your ability to pronounce all those hard names correctly. You must’ve practiced a lot because they’re not easy to pronounce.
Thanks for the video. God bless you.
It would be great to make a movie or more on this mythology, and along the same lines as what Indian filmmakers have done with Adipurush.
Bro the underworlds could honestly make a cool souls like game
I'm just impressed at your pronunciations 😮
I enjoyed this Video. Short , informative
So it is like Greek and Roman?
No. Greeks and Romans had two different religions that later was melted togheter.
Plus the cultural values being quite different between the two continents as well.
Cultural values were mostly originated from the middle east @henriettaabeyta1457

It was all fun and games until the Spanish arrived.

You snapped Bro 😂 lmao
A lot of it does sound pretty funny haha
People always talk about he Mayans in Mexico but it’s pretty obvious that the largest empire was in Present day Guatemala and they still hold Mayan traditions dating back thousands of years.
Guatemala was part of Mexico at one time so same thing😂
@@rustydogrustydog9191 nope wrong! it was part of the Spanish empire not Mexico. Mexico wasn’t even a country yet like the rest of Latin America. We have our own culture and languages.
@@piccolina7577
It’s always been the mechica, the main center of Mayan power was in the Yucatán. Guatemalan culture is just a copy of the Mexican culture. You may not like it but it’s the truth. Everyone knows it.
@@piccolina7577 you need to do your homework..... The other guy is technically right..... Guatemala was part of Mexico for a very brief time. They proclaimed independence from Mexico in 1823.
They both are pretty cool, Blessed Be.
The religious systems of both remind me a lot of a cult, sort of like Jim Jones meets North Korea meets fundamentalist Christian - but with magic mushrooms, weed, datura and peyote and a much more dramatic, incredible, out-there costumes and set design, regal pomp and circumstance. And much much more colorful, intense, and interesting lore. And those people had to have lived in fear all hours of day from living amid not so benign invisible forces. I get a shiver just thinking of the god of snot and the god of scabs. Very intense!
Cambodian mythology up next!
Well that was fkn insane.
You should add in Iron Maiden's song The Book of Souls for music. It is about the Mayans. Mayan Eddie is awesome.
Regarding itzehecayan. Would the Aztecs have experienced snow in Central America?
Great question! There is one record I could find of a surprise blizzard in the city of Tenochtitlan in 1447. Most would have only seen it at the top of mountains in the distance, which I imagine would make it even more mystical to them.
They have six mountain with in seen distance outside of their city with giant ice glacier that receive snow.
The Aztec were one of only a handful of pre industrial cultures that drank drinks with ice.
At current day the amount of mountains with glacier in Mexico is less than ten.
When golf courses follow these suggestions I will gladly follow.
Will double check: Isn't the fifth sun god Tonatiuh? While the Aztec head-god is, in fact, Huitzilopochtli
day 1 can you do one for lovecraft mythos?
Now here’s something to think about how did they know about snow and ice ?
Because most of mexico is on mountainous terrain
@@mrpeanut9953 not in their part of living maybe further up north near the us border
@@JaimeRojas-fc6jv Some of the old volcanoes even have a few legend books of blowing snow. Some volcanoes inspired some of their royal tales in folklore.
@@henriettaabeyta1457 don’t know til today but it must have been volcanic ash
@@JaimeRojas-fc6jv Their folklore at libraries is just rare you never know when one will appear on the shelf, but even TV characters like Charoca do both burn and freeze, he's in Elena of Avalor TV series, and Xico's Journey shows both some of their land thoughts and some of Mexico's animal beliefs, and then El Darado's movie shows how they thought their deities also controlled landscapes. Mexico's tales just are rare to hear the titles of today. Kaoti is one of the more recent of movies of these tribes.
look at that, we stopped sacrificing people and the world is about to end.
You need an update.
Mayans are from Mexico, it was discovered like 3 years ago.
Read about "Aguada Fenix" the oldest Mayan city ever discovered, it is in Mexico. Not Guatenala or Belice.
Aguada Fenix
Thanks for adding your extra information! the Yucatan Peninsula that we mentioned in the video is in Mexico. They then spread to areas of Guatemala and Belize (e.g. Xunantunich in Belize) as we mentioned.
Actually the oldest city is nakbe in peten Guatemala. It dates 750 b.c aguada Fenix is "believe" to be the oldest, but no excavation has been done. It's the same as settlements in Guatemala that they do with lidar.
Mayans also settled in El Salvador. We have the ruins of Tazumal, San Andres and Sitio del Nino. Mayans left in 600CE after the eruption of the Ilopango volcano(now a lake). In 1000 or 1100 Toltecs from central Mexico migrated and settle. They were later known as Pipils which I’m a descendant of.

6:44 blade house - didn’t they use obsidian blades at that time ? Interesting commonality
That’s brutal gruesome stuff
Very monotone. Like the dude hosting the musuem tour on the movie called “the mask”
A fusion technique between a Mexica warrior and a Maya warrior would be insane. Still might lose against the stinkies though :/
do more azteca/maya
What the other 2 , 🤔can't think of it ,
The fallen angels really had people believing so many crazy things back then
0:35 I’m gonna need you angloids to stop acting as if human sacrifice was a unique part of mesoamerican cultures when literally all civilizations practiced human sacrifice for multitudes of reasons. It is a racist characterization/fixation that can directly be traced back to the very settlers themselves to justify their colonization of “savagery.”
I think he was just stating facts and the correlation between both society’s.. you could make the comparison between Greek society and early Roman society
@@HairyJefe The correlation was concocted with the racist historical fixation on their “savagery.”
The correlation is real because It is a savage practice. Im from south america and many native tribes here did not only human sacrifice but also ritualistic canibalism, Blood games, such as hunting captives and mass raping of the captives females from another tribes. These old customs need to be called savage because thats what they are.
@@Bullk1996 Okay then make sure to bring those same practices up when speaking of europeans as well 👌
So your argument is “everyone did it so it’s ok?”
I have a dream that one day people will drop the “Aztec” thing and use the proper Mexica or Nahua terminology for this specific mesoamerican group of people.
Aztec sounds cool.
What a dream
The way that would easily cause confusion for most is because many don't even know Aztec tribes and Maya tribes are actually numerous widely neighboring groups yet. Lots of people think they're titles for single groups.
The difference is 600-800 years between them Mayans were first

Aztec and Maya nothing close to Europe's prehistoric religions. Olympus is a Mountain, Aztlan is a unknown location the Aztec moved away from clearly somewhere in the Southwest states due to the word Uto Azteca bringing up tribes like Hopi in the Canyons.
The didn't look at the signs of trying to predict the future the same ways either. Greeks and Romans it was dieities working with animals Aztec and Maya or similar tribes it's animals doing almost everything before life starts. Plus clear differences such as Roman catholic funerals and Day of The Dead celebration in Mexico today too.
Maya's been in America for 30,000 years
