- Back with another Every Major God in Mythology video, this time we're tackling thunder gods. From some of the most well known gods like the Greek god Zeus and Norse Deity, Thor, to lesser known deities like the dragon or serpent like Sugaar from the Basque mythos. This video also features 3 interesting thunder gods from Japanese legends and a pair of twins that assisted Zeus by holding his thunderbolts. Featuring gods from every continent (apart from Antarctica). With a short introduction to the tales and myths using lighthearted animation.
Disclaimer: Mythology is a diverse tapestry of stories often coming from oral tradition. Because of this, different versions exist. It's important to recognize that myths evolve and vary across regions, eras, and storytellers.

I like that multiple cultures have this idea of a thunderclap being caused by a blunt weapon, either an axe or hammer.
Maybe it's their visual link between sparks from metal, and thinking that its electricity???
Sounds like some guy beating aligator with club during thunderstorm saving his child, later becoming a god in everyone of these mythologies
Not really. Could all be the same origin just told different
not to be that guy, but axes are not blunt
it makes complete sense too because of the sound
Other Thunder gods: we fought a fierce battle and established our Authority
Le gong: I was stuck in a tree
Set: my enemy respawned
Ajisukitakahikone: *baby thowing tantrums*
@@indrickboreale7381 also semen, but you have to look that up yourself, lol
lei gong. not le gong
@@inigo137 Bro💀💀💀 worlds first furry fiction
You forgot lowtiergod. He literally summons thunder before you kill yourself. He doesn't even use it, you just kill yourself on his command. Very powerful
Now 👇🏼 ⛈️⚡
You serve ZERO purpose
Cringe
Also really interesting that thunder gods also so commonly have domain over justice. Even Zeus was responsible for keeping oaths
Probably where the classic notion comes from that when you do something wrong like lie you get struck down😂
Like Patty McCormack, at the end of The Bad Seed--a very satisfying scene.@@smelly1060
Not necessarily the Hindus have yamaraj(ruler of hell) as the god of justice...
Except for his marriage oath
@@shravyaamin8346there are many gods of death associated with justice as well.
I found it ODD to say the least, that many thunder gods/sky fathers from completely unrelated cultures have so many common traits, like, having a connection with goats/bulls and chariots, using an axe/hammer or club, and battling a sea dragon/serpent, quite odd.
It is because they are not unrelated, there is a older common origin for them in the Indo-European culture and Proto-Indo-European cultures. Bulls being a very big deal in those older religions.
@@tacoshop7722clearly some of these are not proto Indo-European.
@@tacoshop7722 I see, but some are not from indo-european roots, like african, asian and meso-american, could it be that these myths are even older than we thought? before the rise of the indo-european themselvs? I mean, they also have to have a origin to their myths... it's a interesting subject to think about.
I don't know much about Native American culture, but regarding East Asian practices like in Shinto, there was indeed significant Indian influence on Shinto. In fact, many gods worshiped in Shinto have roots in India, thanks to the form of Buddhism that influenced Japan. Numerous deities from Hinduism were introduced to the island chain. When Shinto didn't adopt these gods directly, it incorporated aspects of them. Similar interactions occurred in China, Buddhism spread across Asia. So, that's probably why some of the East Asian gods have similar aspects to those found in Indo-European thunder gods.
Sky gods are patriarchal forms of order and strength. The dragon is a monster of chaos. It Jungian symbolism wherein all cultures have to assure their fears and justify the authority of laws and rulers.
Here in Brazil belief in the Orishas of the Yorubá is alive and well. It brings me joy to see Father Xangô (Shango) known to people abroad.
As a Nigerian igbo, I'm quite happy amadioha and sango got mentioned, it does a lot to showcase African myths and stop a lot of the stigma associated with it, African cultures are just as intricate and beautiful as any but thanks to Christians, we're stuck demonising our religion
Same I have an Igbo mom and an edo dad 🇳🇬
As an asian, it is sad what happened to african culture. We are also fighting our own battle with missionaries who spread like a virus.
Stop worshipping demons
You have only yourselves to blame. Even the Europeans who are a majority Christians know something about their old pagan religion. If you've forgotten yours, the blame lies only with you.@@aclosedanddiscontinuedchan124
@@ChristianAuditore14 As usual, the hateful christians show up like clockwork. Mind ur own business, mate. What makes ur imaginary sky daddy anymore real than something else?
It's impressive how many cultures depict their gods as wielding either a hammer, an axe, or a drum (representing the sound of the thunder) and sometimes a spear/javelin (or thunderbolt in Zeus' case)

Love that you don't waste any time and just get straight into the video. Would love to see one on love gods next.
The rich history of African religions and Gods outside of Egypt is often ignored so thank you for mentioning a few of them here.
You've actually missed Mamaragan, the Australian aborigens' God of thunder, who is more similar to the likes of Zeus/Jupiter and Indra holding thunderbolt like weapons rather, which seems to be a bit of a minority trend compared to the many holding other weapons such as hammers and axes
It's still one thunder God i knew about vs the many you did include so no worries, I didn't know about the various African or slavic and alike gods (except Perun), so a praise for the effort and the good job is needed.
My favorite.

Not just that but,
Romulus and heraclues and krishna are same person.
In our Cherokee / Aniyvwiya stories, Ohanadu is the Father of Heaven who rules over the Storms and is also attributed somewhat with the Sun too
Loved your video. ❤
If I may, I'd like to add Tupã (pronouced /tuˈpã/), a Tupi-Guarani deity, from Brazilian Indigenous Mythology.
He is the god of thunder and lighting, as well as the supreme god of the Tupi-Guarani pantheon, is considered the father of every other god and rules the world.
He is the creator of the universe, more specifically, the creator of Light.
He lives in the Sun and he's married to Jaci and is normally described as a benevolent and merciful god. 😊
There's way more to him, but I am in no way shape or form a specialist.
Anyways, great video. And I hope you can add Brazilian Indigenous culture in your next ones. 😉
Hey, theres a deitiy here in native Brazilian mythology: his name is Tupã (Tupan). He's the thunder god around these parts.
No one asked and no one cares

Love how go right at #1 no time wasting intro like most channels.
Igbo Mentioned!! I really appreciate you adding Amadioha
No problem, thanks for watching!
Great video.
So sad you didn't include Tupã from Tupi-Guarani mythology.
Will be cool if you include a god from that mythology on a next video.
Thanks for watching! And noted regarding the Tupi-Guarani mythology, thanks for the suggestion.
Fellow Brazilian here. I asked him to include Candomble mythology as well.
Tupi guarani has so many interesting deities in their mythology but is untouched by world’s pop culture
Glad to see African gods getting some love ❤
@@raffausfaus There should be a video on mystical creatures of indigenous mythology
You put out pretty good content! I have enjoyed the breif summary you provide for the gods and I like that you do your best pronouncing them and leave it at that. I like how your videos come off like you're mainly sharing your interests more than anything else
Great video as always.
I guess I'll suggest a similar video for all the other elements but preferably starting with the Sun Gods. I would also like a video about Chief Deities in Mythology.
Didn’t expect you to include Amadioha. Subscribed because of that. Spot on
Yoruba Mythology has two Orisha related to thunder: Shango and Oya, who are a couple
Their mythology is strong in Brazil and Cuba, besides Africa
😂😂😂 Shango - " oya lets make thunder o"
@@smelly1060 Yep that’s exactly how it is
Oya is lighting bolt, Shango is thunder
Thank you for including many different cultures, it really completed the video.
Lol, 0:0 no.1 😂
It shows how the videos are getting better and better in quality. Now im eagerly awaiting the next videos
Thank you, that means a lot!
@@DarknessandLoreyou can make video about god of death and justice

Totally subscribed, how have i mever seen this channel yet, compiling all the various gods into camps of elemental affinities is something I've researched for easily a decade, and you did all the work after... 😂
Well, this would have made writing my show so much easier, but thanks, this was very enjoyable and informative still 👍
Its perfect for my lore where i make ancient kings on different planets like star wars but with an emphasis on translating a large number of mythologies under one galaxy.
Amazing video, could you do one about every sun deity? That would be interesting as well
Another great one. Can you do gods of fire next?
Love your vids my man keep up the good work
Appreciate it! Thanks for watching
Perun mentioned thank you for covering him.
I know Yahweh's upset he's not on this list, especially since Ba'al gets some well-deserved attention.
That's prolly because he's the creator god and doesn't have one specific domain so I think he's chill about all of this😂
Such a high-quality video, thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching
Thanks for doing these types of videos, its the perfect place to go to look for specific types of gods
Thanks for watching, more coming soon!
@@DarknessandLore Im excited for it, but take your time when you need to
Ajisukitakahikone...
A mere mention of his name...

Love that you included Kahekili of Hawaiian mythology.
Just sub keep them coming keep your videos are so good and if I may ask you something
You missed The 4th RAIKAGE 🗿
XD
Guabancex, top Taíno storm goddess; the Lady of the Winds who also dishes out earthquakes and other natural disasters.
Guatauva, Taíno god of thunder and lightning who is also responsible for rallying the other storm gods.
Juracán, Taíno zemi or deity of chaos and disorder believed to control the weather, particularly hurricanes.
Great video! Would have loved to see Tupã in it
Really like your content! I was thinking maybe for a next video something like this one but around God/Godesses of love? Have a nice day :)
Thanks for the idea and for watching!
kinda cool to see how some characters in fiction(animes, videogames, etc) share names with some of these gods.
I noticed most anime is base of mythology
Winter/snow gods would be an interesting one to see
They are much rarer than all other kinds of gods tho, so as much as I'd want a video on these more obscure figures I think he should focus on gods whose realm are more spread out through various mythologies, such as sea, nature, fire and what so not.
The gods of fire video esoevially could be a long ass one if he also includes every figure related to fire, while a video like the one you suggested could end up being a bit short than the otehrs
@lucabertani225yeh cold or ice mostly found in snowy region not those tropical and hot region but yeh it true fire and sun could found in every deities
Please make a video on the Leading gods of each pantheon.
Sooo, i googled this lettuce thing. That’s enough Egyptian mythology for the next few years
Haha, we did warn you!
Wow real cool info for all mythologys, could you do it as well for Bolivian mithology? Like Tihuanacu and inca gods
Please make every end of the world story in mythology (Ragnarok, Pralaya, Apocalypse, etc)
Now i can picture an axe shaped boat, but a boat shaped axe is crazy
Could you do a video on all the major gods of Craft and forging next?
A video on trickster gods would be interesting
Please do this for every domain. Trying to create a TTRPG based of different gods from different pantheons and this is super helpful.
So cool, happy to help! Thanks for watching.
I have like a crazy "literary" idea involving mythologies, folklores and religions and what so not, so I totally get how you feel lol
Thanks for the video
Thanks for watching!
Interesting to notice how so many cultures have similar themes like a Blunt tool or Axe and a Dragonic Sea-Serpent or Aquatic Nemesis. Also surprising how often the theme of Cattle arises, probably linked to the fact that a lot of them are associated with fertility of the lands since thunder is often paired with Rainfall.
Would be interested in seeing one dedicated to Sea Gods
I know this is a silly request but I'd really like to see a video on Gods of the strangest things (Sleep, food, etc)
Good idea, thanks for watching! 😁
Nice video, but I wish you had mentioned Tupã, the Tupi entity that represents thunder.
There are several thunder/storm gods in Philippine mythology
Saragangka Bagyo (storm), Ribung Kilat (lightning), Ribung Linti (thunder) from Visayan mythology
Ravenador in Ilokano mythology
Onos in Bicolano mythology
Among others
Thanks for the additions!
Can you do Sun Gods next?
Something very interesting about thunder gods is that many of them defeat serpents/dragons
Zeus vs typhon
Thor vs jormungandr
Indra vs vrita
Susanoo no mikoto vs yamata no orochi
Marduk vs tiamat
Perun vs veles
Just to name a few
Indra and vritra
But Indra also deafeated vala ( which became veles in Slavic pantheon)
A common aspect of Thor as a thundergod is thatthe rumbeling of the wheels of his chariot, pulled across the skies by his goats, Gleipnir and Sleipnir, would manifest as thunder
Quick question where did you get your information of these deities? I would love to learn more about Ajisukitakahikone.
I dont know if you are going to read this, but Takemikazuchi is not a Kami related to swords, rather he is a god related to the sword that Izanagi used to kill his son Kagutsuchi (Ame-no-ohabari) after Izanami died in its Childbirth. From the eight body parts he cut off, there came eight deities related to the volcanoes of Japan; and from the blood from the sword that was splattered at the rocks gave birth to several more deities related to the elements of nature, the blood that dripped on its handle gave birth to Takemikazuchi.
You should cover the serpents and dragons that the thunder gods face!
To me, it seems like every mythology is really just a collection of stories about the same set of gods, told in different ways by hundreds of different civilizations. Might provide light on the many parallels
Now we gonna need a thunder Gods battle royal death battle
I thought Amon was the god of Thunder but I guess it was wind he was associated with and it was Set after all! good video
Fun fact Indra dev is also favourite in Buddhism and Jainism too ever in Sikhism too were in all this three religions Indra in a Role
Sikhism is anti-idoltary religon they hate hindu/vedic gods .
Of course as these Dharmik philosophies came out of Hinduism (Sanatan Dharm)
@@Not_DebSay that, and you will find a lot of angry comments. Don't say things that could trigger people, a lot of people hate it when you say this dharma, that dharma has relation with hindu dharma. And there are some same elements in all these dharmas, but don't say this one came out of this one, it's annoying.
....but isn't it true? Sikhism, Buddhism and Jainism emerged from Hinduism rejecting some ideas of it and keeping others in. It's like saying don't say Christianity and Islam come from Judaism as it will trigger people.
@@Not_Deb😂now people shouldn't even say the truth because it triggers some people.
Is there a way you can do a video on the giant snakes/serpents of mythology?
Could you include the inca's mythology for a next video?
Imagine having the power of thunder but stuck in a tree 😂, and cannot get out and need help from a little boy.

Has anyone else noticed that there seems to be a consistent theme where a thunder god fights a giant serpent or dragon of some sort?
Excellent video! Just one question- isn’t Loki, according to some sources, also associated with lightning? He’s the god of mischief and chaos first, of course, but I thought that lightning happened to be his as well according to some interpretations.
Intriguing.
i’d like to see gods of wisdom / justice next! seems like most cultures have them

Awesome! I never knew there were so many gods all over the world! In my culture. Plains Cree. The Thunder being is the Thunder Birds they are called “Piysew” (pee-eh-sue)
I know about thunderbirds.
Idk much about north American mythology, but since I saw in this video the thunderers and how they may turn into birds I thought they may be connected? Do you know if that could be the case? Or do these creeds not have anything in common? Idrk where the respective people lived
@@lucabertani225 it’s not mythology. We still practice our culture to this day. We acknowledge the Thunder Birds as living beings. As we acknowledge all living things in this world has a spirit. Down to the rock. That is something Christianity and the Roman Catholic Church never took away from us.

5:42 this sounds very similar to the thunder bird who is commonly thought of as one of if not the strongest spirit other than the creator in tons of native American religions, specifically in the Anishinaabe beliefs we seen thunderbirds as the strongest spirits, we believe they are connected to all elements, earth and water because the thunderbird gives us food through rain, fire from lightning, and wind because he has the form of a bird, we also believe thunderbirds can turn into humans by taking of their feathers like a cloak or a blanket, we also believe thunderbirds are the protectors of the anishinaabe also in some beliefs he is the ruler of the physical world and has the duty of protecting it from evil spirits also the horned or winged serpent some times the serpent is depicted as having both wings and a horn or horns
