Exactly same. I am also 25. I recently just met my 2 year LDR boyfriend, now my husband, and I felt so insecure about it. When he asked about it, I cried so hard but he just told me he doesn't mind since I was born with it & although there is a little thing that we can do, it will not go away completely. But I still feel insecure about my skin & my hands especially that my husband is a korean with really smooth skin.🥺

Thank you for the highly educational content! I have several of the "dry skin" conditions related to this specific one and I absolutely dread the winter months, I swap my AC for the humidifier in early October. I religiously use CeraVe SA body wash for KP and Amlactin or Eucerin roughness cream twice pet day. I only started using these products within the last few years. Vaseline wasn't enough and I've since relocated to an area with extremely hard water which has exacerbated my skin. I was fortunate to find a new PCP who finally changed my Rx for an emollient for psoriasis, a game changer! My prior doctor would not dream of changing the steroid as she said you cannot grow tolerant to the medication. For about 10 years my psoriasis was left untreated, treated with a med that no longer worked and all other skin conditions worsened or developed in that time. Without your content, I'd still be suffering. Thank you!

So glad you did a video on this condition. I am 66 years old and have had this condition since I was a toddler and wasn’t correctly diagnosed until I was 19. I could write a book about the trials and tribulations, bullying, and the money I have spent on creams and lotions. That said, my skin is under control due to better products. One thing I do that helps me and costs only pennies is to spray myself down with water and vegetable glycerin 50/50 while my skin is still damp from the shower, then follow with amlactin. For those on FB, there is a group called “Friends of Ichthyosis”. There are people from all over the globe that post there. It is helpful just knowing that you aren’t alone. Dr. Dray, can you please do a video on the best moisturizers for the face (especially under makeup) for those of us who have IV. Thanks

Hi Dr.Dray. I loved this video, it is very informative. My parents live in England and my dad was diagnosed with a form of cancer a year ago. And now he has Eczema or what you have described in this video. The cream they gave him in England was not working very well I have watched many of your videos and I have taken many notes 🤣 my skin has improved dramatically after watching your videos. So I sent my dad all the creams that I thought he needed, and now his eczema has improved. He has thanked my but I told him that YOU get the credit. Thanks Dr. Dray…🤗

Ditto most everything already said. I was already subscribed. I was looking at a video from yesterday about an under the eye cream at dollar tree and it occurred to me to search Dr dray toenail fungus. I found one from several years ago where you have a cute short haircut. (Jealous because short hair = Brillo pad look for me, thank you humidity. You recommended urea but my phone glitched and I had to start over. I searched Dr dray urea and got this video. That’s a mouthful of a name. Thanks a million for this video. It’s all me. Allergies, excema, asthma, alligator skin. Since I was diagnosed with MS in 2014 it has tripled in severity. My thyroid specialist told me to stop looking for moisturizing products and get ones that say hydrating instead. That just stopped the cracking. I’m going to start Soak and Smear immediately.

Omg I think my whole family has this! When my mother was a child, doctors briefly thought she had neurodermitis. She has both asthma and a lot of season allergies. Our shins and hands look exactly like in the pictures. My skin has never not been itchy, no matter what I do. When my sister was a child, she was prescribed medical creams with a lot of fat because she would scratch herself bloody at night. No matter which product I put on my skin (with the exception of mineral oil and silicones), my skin just drinks it up and is pretty much as dry as before. It's flaky everywhere. My elbows and knees are basically sandpaper and always have been. During winter, I often get weird rashes on my face, but they're never too extreme, so I've never seen a dermatologist.
Thank you SO much for this video!! My entire life I've wondered how people can just shower, even if it's just for 5 min and not moisturise after, like is it some kind of superpower. No one in my family can do that. Everything makes so much more sense now.

  • @Laura-vs6fs
    @Laura-vs6fs 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I have the white, flakiness on my legs and sometimes on my arms. The moment you mentioned hyperlinearity in hands I looked at them and was just staring in shock lol My hands usually look really good and are pretty smooth, but just washing the dishes once and they are done. I never thought I would be so fast to diagnose myself with a disease by just watching one video. Even with rosacea I did more research until I realized I had it, but this video really explained this condition well. I always had dry skin on my body and my face, even though I have acne. I am in my early 20's and it always scared me to think my skin will just get more dry with age. I have been looking into products from Linola as they specialize in dry skin and conditions connected to it, but now I am determined to buy their fat creams etc and even oil baths as it's obvious this isn't just a matter of not enough moisturizer. I use the Lactovit shower milk and their body moisturizer is amazing too as their products contain lactic acid and urea and for my face I use the Garnier rose milk for my face and the Nivea Care moisturizer as it's very moisturizing, not extremely thick and looks amazing underneath makeup

This is a really good video, spreading awareness like this, all my life I've been dealing with this and no amount of lotion I used got my legs to look moisturized, this is an embarrassing condition at times, as it limits what you wear, as your dry skin will be on display.

Thank you so much for this. This is the first I've heard of this condition, and I'm 50! It seems to fit my situation exactly. Childhood asthma, KP on my cheeks and upper arms, occasional psoriatic patches, always, always, always have had very dry skin--like sometimes in the winter I develop painful cracks, especially on my shins. I'm actually crying a bit knowing why my skin is this way, or at least having a strong suspicion of why. Now I have some things to try to help improve things. Thank you so much.

This is such an eye opener. Lived all my life with people telling me I'm lazy because I didn't want to shower all the time, or assuming I don't take care of myself or moisturize. When i was just a 25-year-old girl, a client told me I had "worker hands" in front of many people and it was so upsetting. Thank you for this video. I never understood why i take vitamins, quit drinking, have collagen, blah blah...but have such dry skin!

@@user-nu2bk5bv5q it didn't work. So, I quit. What helps more is making sure our vit D levels are good, removing anything that is inflammatory to you (for e.g. I am dairy- sensitive so I reduced my intake). I looooved sugar, but I have reduced my intake to a little in my coffee and occasional desserts. And during dry weather, I Palmer's cocoa butter the crap out of my body. And for my "worker hands?" - therapy for self esteem and the Serenity prayer - I just accept what I cannot change but there's so much other stuff to love about me, so I focus on that. The death of some loved ones made me realize life's too short to spend worrying about some tiny details. 🤷🏻‍♀️

@@roselynholloway7863 I am doing much better after just understanding my skin more. I switched to mostly ayurvedic/natural products. On extremely dry days, I rub oil all over myself before taking a shower and use no harsh soap on my arms and legs. And the biggest change is mental! I realized, "oh that's just how my skin works. I am not lazy and my skin is not terrible, it's my biggest organ and does a lot for me. It just needs a little love." Now I don't resent it. And my hands? I get pedicures and just want to give them some love. I'm not going to be a hand model but I'm ok. I also happened to move to my home country where I don't have to shake hands - so, I haven't heard anything about them! Thank you for asking. Are you worried about ur skin as well?

I really appreciate this video! Ever since I can remember I had wrinkly and rough hands. Growing up, kids used to say I had "grandma hands", and now as an adult, when I shake peoples' hands, I can tell they notice rough hands - some even say someone about "you must work a lot with your hands". In my 20's, I went to a dermatologist for acne and I asked what was going on with my hands. I remember he said I had something like icthyosis, but didn't say anything about resolving it. With this video, I have a much better idea of what is going on and what I can do about it!! Thank you so much!!! 🙏 ❤

Oh my goodness I didn't even know I had this until I watched this video! That's exactly what my legs look like in the winter. I also have really bad seasonal allergies, KP, and really long eyelashes. Huh! And this explains why I constantly have to baby my moisture barrier and have such reactive skin. And why I love my nighttime humidifier! And why I love aha in my body creams!! And why I love using ceramides in everything!!!
    This is so helpful.

Thank you Dr Dray for covering this! I inherited this from my Dad, though he’s the gene carrier. As a child the condition was much worst, but with better products on the market, I’ve seen a huge difference. I was first diagnosed at age 12, before that, I was taken to every Dr bc my family had no clue where I got it from. Once I had a name, I was ok with it. I remember telling my grandma, “who ever wants to marry me will have to accept me the way I am!” She wanted to take me to another derm and I said no. He told me the do’s and don’ts and I have lived by them ever since. No hot showers, no wool directly on my skin etc. I use cetaphil’s baby wash and shampoo as my soap. Lotion I flip back and forth but I never use Vaseline only. On my lower leg I use a product with 22% Urea. The old dys I remember they treated my condition using my own urine and lemon; now I know why. I do not have it on my face, but my hands and feet are dry and yes, those lines. As a side note, I was recently diagnosed with LPP with some scarring bc I mistook some of the signs for IV. When I asked Dr Donovan about the correlation, he said it could be. I don’t complain about it as I’ve learnt to live with it at its worst and now at my best thanks to modern improvements. I appreciate you covering this topic. 🙏🏽❤️

Holy cow, just realized I might actually have this, albeit likely a more mild case! Until very recently I never liked using body lotion and I thought that having super dry almost scaly looking skin was something everyone had when they didn't use moisturizer....though I would notice that it never seemed to go away the rare times I used a basic lotion consistently (...this is really random but I think I'm finally realizing that I have dry skin) My dad has eczema so I wouldn't be surprised if I got it from him. I coincidentally started using the Eucerin Roughness Relief Lotion (couldn't find the cream version) and pulled on my pajamas immediately after applying to treat some KP I had, and the scaliness(not sure how else to describe it) slowly went away with it!

I just figured out that I have this, as a child I'd often have to take oilatum baths and I was told by many dermatologists that I just had eczema, but I always wondered why I had scaly looking legs, I just figured in the cold weather my skin cracked and it was just scarring from that but I moved to Spain for two years and used a eucerine sun cream and my skin drastically improved , now I've moved back to the UK where the weather is freezing my skin has reacted badly to being here to the point where I want to go to the doctors but this was really insightful so thanks for sharing this x

I am one of those followers that never leave a comment until now. Thank you so so much for covering this topic, I was so surprised to learn that I have ALL the signs of ichthyosis vulgaris you briefly mentioned in this video. I was and still am very self conscious about my wrinkly hands and flaky legs since I was a kid. Watching this video almost made me laugh, it's like a ah ha moment. I did most of the suggestions you mentioned for years, found those out by trial and error. My dad is a pathologist who also suffers from eczema, he didn't believe I could have ichthyosis vulgaris until I showed him my legs, he was like...
    Ok, maybe you do.
    🤣 I am in my late 30.

I've been meaning to ask if you'd do a video on this condition. I've had issues with my skin and comments made about my wrinkly palms and bottoms of my feet, dryness, and the weird skin care routine all my life. As a child I had no idea I was different until I started middle school when it finally occurred to me my skin isn't like everyone else's. As a baby my mom had to slather me with lotion after daily baths. When I started to suspect something was different I asked her about it and she said when I was born the nurses said "oh my, look at those wrinkly hands and feet!" She said she felt bad for me because if she didn't put lotion on me my skin would get so dry and get painful cracks. This still happens. I wasn't diagnosed until my mid 40s. Up until that point I was so confused on what to do about my skin. All I knew was I needed to avoid water and touching things because both made my skin dryer, but that makes the simplest things like bathing or laundry more difficult because I have to wear gloves or my hands get so dry they feel like sand paper and crack even if I put lotion on immediately. Since being diagnosed I got the validation I guess I never knew I needed. Before I used to try being more normal, now I know that's not what's best for me and its ok to take the extra time it requires to protect my skin. It's helped my friends and family understand too.
I guess this is my long drawn out way of sharing my experience for other's that may be struggling and saying thank you for making this video ❤

So lovely. Thank you for sharing. Yes, understanding our diagnosis brings peace. Otherwise people make you feel like you don't moisturize or take care of yourself. Which works backwards - it made me feel bad about myself and less likely to take care of myself. Once I accepted my skin, my genes, and the good and bad, I just moisturize when needed and stop thinking about my hands so much. It is what it is.

Wow…lupus…you might have connected the dots for me. Yes other family members have this besides myself but also lupus runs in my family. Recently I’ve been getting horrible neck rashes and sometimes on my cheeks too. Waiting on rheumatologist referral now. I’m wondering if all of it is connected, especially after my labs.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for this info. I want to get my esthetician’s license when my daughter starts school but am so self conscious of my hands. Not just the lines, but also the roughness and cracked knuckles when the humidity drops outside. Hopefully now I can get some answers and move forward with achieving my goal. 🙂

I have suffered from what my family called "trishas alligator skin" my entire life. It wasn't until I was an adult that I went to a dermatologist who gave me the name. When I grew up I was picked on because of my skin being different. I now have a son who is 14 who suffers from eczema and has inherited icythosis vulgaris from me. I have raised him aware of what it is called and he is quick to educate even school nurses.

I have this and never knew it had a name! As a child we lived in very dry conditions and my legs were so cracked they would bleed 😖 I had no idea it was linked to my very lined hands, it's a running family joke that I have always had "old lady hands". How interesting, thank you!

SKIN PEELING GEL works great on the face to remove dry flakey skin before the application of makeup rather than rubbing with a face cloth or other abrasive to remove it. EUCERIN ADVANCED REPAIR LOTION also works really well for flakey skin on the body. Thanks for this tip in a previous episode!

All of my life, I have felt a bit ashamed of my "wrinkly" hands and feet. I also suffered from Keratosis Pilaris), albeit, a mild case. My legs have gotten progressively more dry until I lost most of the bumps and all of the hair off my legs permanently (have not shaved legs in 12 years and they look like I just shaved). I also have mild eczema on left hand and some toes. Looking at my hands and feet and listening to the video hit home.....now I know the cause of my skin issues. I use a variety of over the counter creams with urea and lactic acid as well as petrolatum with good success, but the wrinkly hands and feet are there to stay☹️

My forearms are always very very dry and look creepy. I'm so intrigued now with this condition.
I wonder if it has and effect with elastin and collagen in our skin...

Hello Dr Dray! Your videos are so useful and informative, huge thank you! Would you consider making a video on the topic of finding the right dermatologist? Like hints to understand if it’s a good one or need to continue looking. I’ve been 5 times to different dermatologists and none of them made any tests on my skin, didn’t take any samples or anything. So I have a super dry, patchy skin on my face for 10 or so years and no doctor could tell me which condition do I have, like, is it eczema or psoriasis or vulgaria or dermatitis or whatever there is... so I just gave up at some point and I just use moisturizers which work for me, but I don’t know what am I treating. I’d like to know which tests should a competent dermatologist make and how long the identifying might take time.

I’m just learning about this condition and I’m pretty sure I have it! I have lashes that people get jealous of since they’re so long and I have a so many of them. I actually have so many that I am diagnosed with trichiasis, and I have to pluck my lashes in the outer corners. Otherwise, they rub my corneas. My palms are covered in lines and super dry. I actually hate washing my hands, since I have to immediately put on a dab of Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream, despite using the Vanicream liquid hand soap. I avoid hot water at all costs, but unfortunately I get scales on my arms due to a patch medication I wear daily on my upper arm. It’s an antidepressant called Emsam, which is an MAOI. It causes horrible rashes, itching, dryness and scaling that require me to use clobetasol cream and Eucerin Intensive Repair Lotion daily. I take Dupixent for eczema too, but it hasn’t made a difference to my dry hands and upper arms. And to top it all off, I have severe seasonal allergies that have required two years of shots to mitigate the symptoms. I had no idea I had this condition until now! Thanks so much Dr. Dray, you’re the best.

Wow, I didn't know there was a diagnosis, I just thought I had really dry skin! It's a little eerie to the detail of how it fits. I managed to find products that worked in adulthood but with inflation (or shrinkflation) they've all since either changed their formulas so they no longer work, discontinued, or the company has gone out of business in recent years.
Everything I try now makes my skin turn red or break out in some way. Everything cerave minus the salicylic acid body wash. Anything with coconut in it. I'm also very sensitive to fragrance and the way things feel on my skin. I no longer wear sunscreen because I haven't found any that I can tolerate, either due to the fragrance, or something causing my skin to react (anything with zinc makes my skin red, dry and irritated). I know people tell me it's a personal preference, but I also really can't tolerate the thicker products, I tried the Eucerin Daily Hydration with SPF and had to wash it off right away. I can't describe it, it makes me shudder. My face is much more sensitive than the rest of my body.
Because I don't know what else to do I've been trying using olive oil, for some reason I can tolerate the feeling of oil, but it does make me break out if I do it too often. So maybe oils are the way to go. The fewer ingredients the better.
