  • This is all about my experience with anesthesia awareness - when you are accidentally conscious during surgery. In 2011 I had a right adrenalectomy for a Pheochromocytoma, and this is how it went...
    Side note: I'm all better now! Tumor free since then!

    I experienced Anesthesia Awareness when they took out my appendix. It was horrible....it just goes on and on...things that take two minutes felt like eight hours and the pain was so unbearable that for a second I truly felt like I should just stop myself from breathing and die....it was a horrible experience and I'm sorry you had to go through that. Your surgery was probably 10x more painful than a stupid appendix surgery. I also had a moment where it seemed like I was out of my body. For a full minute or two it seemed like I was outside of my body, watching myself and for that minute I couldn't feel the pain...I was never presented with the option to die or live though other than wanting to kill myself. (don't read the rest if you don't believe in God, because I don't wanna offend you or your religion)
    I think God didn't give me the option in that moment because he knows I would've chosen to die. I think God knew you wanted to live, and he wanted to give you the strength to go on by giving you the choice to live. And for that you are the strongest woman I have ever seen.

    In my opinion I feel like hospitals should start numbing the area they are gonna do surgeries on just Incase someone has anesthesia awareness and/or when that hospital doesn’t have the machines to detect the brainwaves because this is just crazy ppl don’t need to go through this at all😭😭🤞🏽💔😫

    I too had anesthesia awareness when I was only 2 years old. I could see and smell everything when they were operating on me to remove two hernias. Though I do not recall feeling physical pain, I was completely paralyzed and could not communicate and the surgeon did not seem to notice I was awake and conscious. At a certain point I felt I was out of my body watching the surgeon and nurse! Everything was so bright and vivid and yet dreamlike...I should say nightmarish. It traumatized me. I had nightmares after that and all my life have suffered from anxiety. It's truly an awful thing to happen to a person and I'm so sorry you experienced this. I would think that since 1982 (when mine occurred) things have advanced enough in medicine that AA would not happen. Hugs and healing to you

    • @natashawigley5552
      @natashawigley5552 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It definitely can happen in a way that you don't experience pain, so it's possible you actually didn't. There are three components to anaesthetic; paralysis drug, pain reliever and one to make you fall unconscious. Sometimes both of the latter two fall short, sometimes only the last one, so you can have an experience where you are aware of what's happening around you but don't feel anything physically. It would still be terrifying though, people who have reported this type of awareness say that they woke up a few minutes into their surgery and thought they were being buried alive. I'm sorry that happened to you!

      Swan ganz does not measure blood pressure. Brachial A line? Wtf?
      Pheo has great survival....... like what?
      You said anesthesia was great, but he didn’t ask you for any anesthesia complication? And your dad didn’t speak up? What?
      Your table is never just metal. Ever.
      So you don’t remember being intubated but you do remember being stuck?

    I just came over straight after Shane's video. Oh My God!!!! That was incredibly terrifying. I had spinal fusion surgery on May 31 2016. My surgery was 18 hours long. I had 2 titanium rods screwed on to my spine with 30 screws. I was cut shoulder blades down into my butt crack. And they drilled a hole in each vertebra then put a screw thru that hole in the rod then into the vertebra then put a washer on to hold the screw and rod in place. I'm so relieved I didn't know this was possible before my surgery otherwise I may have backed out. I had a bit of memories after anesthesia. But nothing like that. As they extended my right arm that had the IV in it the IV got caught on something and it pulled and hurt really really bad. I said OW really loud and a female voice said she's still here give her more. Or at least something along those lines. And my Doctors assistant backed that up. After surgery when I was back in my room his assistant came in and was looking at my hand. And I asked her why she said well the IV tube was caught on a tray and pulled and hurt you. She said thank god I said something otherwise they may not have noticed. So IDK!!! If she meant the fact that it hurt and I wasn't out completely or if it hurt and they hadn't noticed the IV was stuck and pulling on my skin on the top of hand. I'm just glad that is the only part I was kind of awake for. Thank God. I'm so glad you are able to cope with this horrible event. I'm glad you got help. Good luck with life!!!

    I experienced this when I had my heart transplant. It was a living hell, I thought of committing suicide,but I couldn’t.
    I was happy that I couldn’t because I would have. You see, I felt *everything*. I can’t explain how scared I was and left me a mental scar.
    Now I’m a loner, who is scared to talk, but never walked into the hospital, and also could never be alone.
    I was paralysed and was not able to do anything
    Please don’t hate me, and if you are having a surgery, don’t worry. I was just a very unlucky and unfortunate person.
    It was horrible when I experienced Anaesthesia awareness , about 2 years ago, and I was 10 - 11 years old at the time. I was too young to experience this feeling.

    My dad passed away two years ago during surgery and I always wonder about his consciousness during it. I assume anesthesia worked properly with him because after many surgeries he hadn't mentioned this experience, so I wonder if he even had a choice to stay or if he didn't even know and he was just gone. And I wonder had he had this state of consciousness would things be different. This was a very powerful video and you seem like such a sweet girl. I'm so happy Shane's video brought me here (:

  • @whatever918
    @whatever918 7 ปีที่แล้ว +338

    That is truly horrible, I'm so sorry you went through that.... I'm a nursing student so I've been an observer during surgeries and to think someone can feel all that...omg. I have a couple of questions if that's ok: Were you connected to a regular EEG? And since your mind was awake and panicking, wouldn't that make your adrenalin rush and heart beat really fast? Didn't they notice that?

    • @sammadsen1035
      @sammadsen1035 7 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Gina Aa. Z she said that there wasn't an eeg because it's more of a newer technology

      @aileendiazdeleon2485 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Gina Aa. that's exactly what i was thinking. even if there was no eeg, wouldnt your heart start racing?

    • @Katrinaosity
      @Katrinaosity  7 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      The EEG for these situations is still only in testing phases. I had a Pheochromocytoma, so they expected some shenanigans from that, so any heartrate problems they probably chalked up to that expectation. They did have to use a different type of anesthesia than usual because the surgery was so risky due to the nature of the tumor.

  • @VikkieShoemaker

    Wow. Thats all i can say. U are really remarkable to be able to have gone thru this and deal with it so well and be so positive about it. You are an incredibly strong person to have overcome the experience and working thru therapy with such a good positive and greatful attitude. You chose to have gratitude for being alive and faced this nightmare experience with strength and courage and fought your way thru and didnt let it keep you from living your new chance at life fully with joy and happiness and i find that to be so inspirational. I look at myself and my depression from past experiences and it all seems so insignificant after hearing what you have been thru. I am truly in awe of you right now. God bless and keep you well.

    The part where you detached is a pretty common experience for people with mental and physical pain. It's called disassociation, except that your experience was a lot more extreme because of what you were going through in the moment. It was your body and mind's way of trying to get you through that pain and to keep you away from that pain for long enough that you could make the decision whether to stay or leave.
