There are some really good deals on refurbished Magic Keyboard cases for the iPad Pro in either sizes. There are also some pretty good Apple Pencil alternatives that will work pretty well for persons who want to take notes. For artists, the Apple Pencil and its additional features are an absolute must. For non-artists, the alternative brands could work with very little issues and difficulty. Consider these options if interested in the iPad Pro and saving some funds.

I also try to work with my iPad air 5 and the same conclusion: for some tasks it’s ok but for the majority of them you spend much more time. I really think that is made for other stuff like, and in my case is reallybreally necessary a external monitor since 11” is not enough for hours of working…. Nice video!

I’ve been an iPad Pro 12.9” user since 2018 and haven’t owned a Mac since. I recently started a podcast though, and that anxiety of not being able to get something done on an iPad Pro is real. I think it’s the Operating System that can be the determining factor when it comes to overall usefulness of a device. Sure comfort comes a close 2nd. Both the MacBook Air/Pro & the 12.9” iPad Pro are very capable but it comes down to one’s individual circumstances, where things can differ.
Apple have been trying to improve the overall iPad experience it seems and (to me) the upcoming iPadOS 17 brings even more to the table, particularly with the ability to not only resize but move windows to anywhere you might want them on the screen. There does come the question however (as a manufacturer) of notebook computers & tablets: how much do you make these devices similar without losing too much profit on the other?
Apple could make their laptop screen brighter with a pro-motion displyay (with the option to switch down the refresh-rate to 50Hz) to save battery, like it’s possible to do on their iPhone Pro line and that would make them more compelling! It’s great that they can offer a choice between a notebook or a tablet that are just as capable as one another!

Hi Tausif, new subscriber here. Thx so much for your educational and enjoyable explorations into all things tech, media and sometimes Apple! Do you think the Apple M1 AIR iPad would be enough to work with Logic for iPad? How's GarageBand and its roundtripping thru Apple machines? 11 inch vs 12.9. The larger is needed? It would seem so, but the 11 inch is easier to deal with.

A more direct comparison for user experience would have been the iPad Pro 12.9 vs. the Macbook Air 13". Virtually the same screen size, but the MBA 13" comes in over $400 less than an iPad Pro 12.9 with Apple Magic Keyboard. Then when you consider that you could go up to an MBA 15" and still save money, the 12.9" iPad Pro 256GB doesn't really make a lot of sense.

I own both.. as much as anyone would “want” the iPad to work like a real computer, it just doesn’t. File management and window management holds the thing back tremendously, along with right click context menus. They really should release full macOS for the M1/M2 apple silicon iPads.
I just use my iPad for writing notes in GoodNotes at work and controlling music at home. Getting away from paper notepads and being able to rearrange written notes is a game changer.
The MacBook Air is used for everything else digitally. The iPad travels with me everywhere for anything critical I need to do or accomplish, but it’s much slower to be productive in many cases (editing and sending an excel spreadsheet that a coworker needs, for example.. no efficient or quick way to download the file, edit, then reply and attach/send back.. SO convoluted on the iPad vs the real laptop)
Full apps are always going to be better than anything released on the iPad. The iPad versions are convenient for when you’re on the go but you’ll always be more productive on the laptop

I hear you and get your point. However, I think that like most people the issue is that you are looking to use the iPad just like you use your MAC, and therein lies the problem. The iPad is not a MAC. You can do almost everything you can do on the iPad that you can on the MAC except for things like burning DVDs (which I'm not sure if anyone does anymore but I digress), creating breakout rooms on Zoom, etc. But these seem to be more of a developer issue and not the fault of iPadOS. When Apple said there is an app for that they were not lying because the iPad has an app for everything but if you are looking for the exact same apps that your MAC has or a proprietary software then you will be disappointed. I use my iPad to do work in the same manner as I use my Windows laptop and I actually use the iPad more. It really boils down to preference and everyone's ability to expand their skill set and not search for a one-and-done way of doing things.

What do you think is the better option, (WWTD :) keep the Mac Mini or MBA, and trade it for an iPad Pro?
I’ve been thinking about upgrading my iPad Mini to an Air or Pro. I had an Air before the Mini 6 and a Mini 1 before the Air. But with iPadOS and Apple Pencil, I tend to use an iPad often and away from my desk. I have a MBA M1 which I use when on the go or when I don’t want to be at my desk and I have multiple items that I need/want to do simulataneously. And, I have a Mac Mini M1 at the desk, which I spend quality time at (WFH).
There days that I think that I should have just gotten the MBA M1 first and only main computer instead of the Mac Mini so that I could just grab and go, but at the time, I didn’t need that option, and if needed to be moblie an iPad was the common need. I am currently volunteering that takes me away from my desk, which having a laptop is more ideal than an iPad in many occasion since I’m having to work around Microsoft Office and often jumping between the suite.
So I’m struggling with either trading in my MBA or Mac Mini for an iPad Pro/Air. However, my Mac Mini is better than my MBA: it has 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB storage, whereas my MBA is the basic 8 & 256. I’m learning programming in Java, Lua, and Swift, I use LumaFusion and am learning DaVinci Resolve, I create Adobe PDFs, use Microsoft Office (mostly Excel-I do data), and play Minecraft Java Edition and Roblox. And I make use of Apple stuff like but not limited to: Shortcuts, Apple One stuff, family management (kids accesses and time management), Apple Office Suites, and lots of browsers opened.
I have docking capability: I have three monitors, one is always for work (Windows), the other two I bounce between Mac and Windows. So if I was to keep the MBA, it is feasible to continue as if nothing changed. If both the MBA and Mac Mini had the same memory and storage, it would be a no brainer, I would trade in my Mac Mini. What would you do?

Well said, the iPad just seems easier to use, less cluttered almost and I find the portability just top notch, I can virtually study on my bed for example whereas the MacBook would kind of be awkward to hold too.

The deal breaker with the Air is the screen and refresh rate. I simply cannot go back to 60hz with grey blacks now that I’m used to high refresh rate with inky blacks.

I just find it so much easier to be quick and efficient in macOS. With iPadOS, as beautiful as it is, it feels much clunkier (when using it in desktop mode, mouse+keyboard).
I use Safari the majority of time and it's just not optimized as well on macOS for desktop use. Plus many websites will still push you their app version which is just a blown up phone app, so it feels bad on larger iPads. 11 inch screen is too small for desktop mode, 12.9 is a good size but the apps and OS hinder it from matching it's macOS counterpart.

If you just need to edit videos, create content and consume content then get the iPad, other than that just get the MacBook, I already had both at the same time and the iPad ended up being a second monitor for my MacBook, making the effort of trying to get the iPad Pro to be your main computer is not worth it.

  • @TheThaiLife

There’s just no comparing the two devices. The iPad has been long forgotten, and they are doing just enough to not make people actively angry. For a productivity machine, anything beats it hands-down, no contest thousand percent. My iPad is just a second monitor basically for my M2 max MacBook, I still love it. I want it to be great. But, by the time it is, there will be five more out beyond the M2 12.9 I have.

I bought a 12.9 inch iPad Pro in 2021 and tried to use it as my main everything - computer (w Magic Keyboard) , tablet, notebook (w Apple Pencil) , it was really useful for a while...but then became useless because I realized I absolutely needed MacOS and couldn't take the limitations of iPadOS. I ended up getting a MacBook Air 15 inch recently, and it's night and day. I'm thinking of selling my iPad Pro and just getting a base iPad 9th or 10th gen (or maybe I'll just keep my iPad Pro for 10 years so at least the value proposition won't be terrible)... but anyways, the iPad Pro is useless I realized...9 times out of 10 I would recommend just get a MacBook Air 13 or 15.

Its because its a do it all for people who dont need a mac. As a student the only time id be screwed without my mac is for a software I had to use thay was not in the app store
At its best the ipad with the magic keyboard is the all in one, could be an even more portable, versatile, touchscreen, 120hz version of the mac that is also so good for students and artists at the same time.
What I actually dislike about the ipad pro is (1) the battery isnt near what it is on the mac, especially on the magic keyboard and (2) excel, word, docs, etc just feels like garbage on the ipad

    • @kaischmidt730
