Always thrilling... but did you know the Legion has other special features than its multi-national composition ? Its flags bear the words "Honneur et fidélité" when other French regiments bear the words "Honneur et patrie" on their flag. When in parade, the Legion is the only unit which plays the music by its own band, and they are the only unit which doesn't split in two when arriving in front of the presidential stand
The slow march is a tribute to the men who patrolled the harsh north african desserts. The Kepi Blanc or white caps signify the bleaching of the hot sun. This is a branch that deserves respect!
Slight correction: The 88 step per minute march rhythm of the Legion has nothing to do with North African deserts, but was inherited from "Ancien Régime" (actually rather "Restauration" era) and napoleonic troops. Your explanation of the white képi is however correct. It was originally kaky brown, but was quickly bleached white by the sun... hence was later made white.

The guys with the axe and apron are pioneers/sappers. The pioneer's beard is a tradition inherited from the sappers of the Great Army (Napoleon's). Legend has it that the latter took an oath to shave only if they returned alive. Since the pioneers attacked first to open breaches in defense work (hence the tools), their life expectancy was very low.
I had a young girl come to me for advice. Her brother and his best friend had decided to join French Foreign Legion. She had just found out they had flown to France - how to tell mum. I explained that if she acted quikly all could work out - you cannot join the Legion from inside France!
I have no idea what you want to say. People who want to join the legion have to travel to mainland France and present themselves in one of the recruiting centers. There is one in the largest cities. Perhaps you are confused. French citizens are officially not allowed to enlist as a soldier in the legion. In older times, French citizens who wanted to join as a soldiers gave a Belgian or Swiss nationality and the legion did its best not to find out but those times have long gone.
@@peterpluim7912 You are misleading people, any French person can enlist in the Foreign Legion and they are highly sought after, because they are the ones who transmit the language and assist the young people enlisted in learning and mastering French outside of the courses given during training. It is very unfortunate that Kings of France from Louis XIV, XV & XVI failed to obey the Command given by Our Lord Jesus Christ thru St. Margaret Mary Aloquet. to Consecrate France to Sacred Heart of Jesus on 17th June, 1689, such disobedience resulting in the fall of the French Monarchy & the French revolution. @johnmorgan4313: So, you're saying that because 3 kings refused to follow the diktat of some random woman on a specific date. Bearing in mind, two of them weren't even born yet, it took a deity 100years to arrange the virtual extermination of a Royal family and the deaths of untold millions of innocent people all over Europe. March of arrogance because they are on of the very, very few that desevre to walk at their own pace because no one can tell them to do otherwise.
This cadence is inherited from Ancien Regime (royal) and Napoleonic troops. Tradition more than arrogance!

Those are the engineers, the buffalo hide apron is for protection against traps, splinters and explosives as they assault fortifications.
