New Life for an Old Wisteria

  • Each season has its own distinctive flowers, and in Japan early May sees the wisteria blossom. Many people travel at that time to see fine examples of wisteria, a spreading vine that can be arranged over a trellis to create magnificent cascades. We visit Japan’s most famous wisteria, a giant old tree transplanted 20 years ago from its previous site to allow continued growth. It was thought too big and old to transplant until one tree surgeon discovered how to safely move the huge trunk. Following her as she works to rescue trees, we’ll get a glimpse of Japanese traditions of respect for the natural world.

As a teen with recently diagnosed ADHD, I really wish I had gotten into plants sooner. They really do help more than people would expect. I'm much calmer when I've been around the garden and although it doesn't cure my condition, it gives me the energy to push through. Helping youth learn about plants is wonderfully noble

Look for vines with air roots, or vine growing along the ground that have sent down roots. Replant them, and they will grow amazingly fast and will flower the second year. I started with one plant and now have four more, started from vines from the original plant.

@@kevinescobar8102 I should've said I have three 7-8 foot tall huge "bushes"/"trees" that are 3-4 feet around, plus a 2 year old that's about 5 feet tall. (They all bloom heavily in the Spring.) A "plant" makes them sound little and they're not. They grow fast and big and full. And just today I found a new vine growing up the fence in a corner of the house - it's at least 10 feet from one of the other ones, so it grew that long against the foundation of the house, unseen, until it reached the fence and is now about 4.5 feet tall and getting new tiny branches!
