    I saw this video some months ago, I finally bought the seeds some days ago and I'm glad to comment that this method is amazing, all of my seeds germinated and I'm now waiting for them to fully sprout in the little containers I put them into, so thanks for inspiring me to give this plants an opportunity to grow and spreading this great method around

      Hi! I received some wisteria seeds and I put them in a glass jar for 3 days then I removed the access of water and now waiting for them to sprout is that the way you did it?
      Also I did another method that I found on TH-cam I took 10 seeds put them in a jars for 3 days then I removed the outer brown shell and I see it sprouting and place them in a plastic container with paper towel on the bottom and placed the bottom and on top of the seeds and poured water so the paper towel is soaked.
      When you put your seeds in water did you put the seeds in direct sunlight? I’m new to this and I would appreciate your feedback?
      Thank you

      I would have loved to be able to give the seedlings away to anyone wanting one but shipping them internationally wasn't a viable option so I was limited to offer them locally. Luckily the seeds are really easy to germinate so I'm sure you will soon have enough wisteria plants for your garden and some to spare.👍

    • @OddBonsai
      @OddBonsai  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's true that if you just plant the seed and sit back expecting it to flower without providing it with the proper care it could take this long. If it is planted in the ground in good soil, in a favorable location and you prune it correctly every year to promote blooming it will bloom much faster. Hope this helps!
      There are a lot of articles on the internet which just tell you that Wisteria grown from seed will take up to 15-30 years to bloom but don't tell you more than that. And this is because many of them are written by authors without first hand experience with growing Wisteria so they just put together bits of information from multiple sources.

    • @OddBonsai
      @OddBonsai  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's normal for the seed to soak in water when it rehydrates. The swelling of the seed is a good sign that it is still viable. It will swell up a bit even if it's a non-viable seed but not so much and it will soon start to rot if it's a bad seed.

    • @OddBonsai
      @OddBonsai  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What do you mean when you say it dies in winter? Loosing its leaves during winter is normal for wisteria. If you have more serious dieback you may be living in a place where winters are more harsh? Dieback could a cause for your wisteria not flowering. If it has a vigorous growing season it should flower the next especially after 15 year.

    I know it's early days, but may I ask when and how you would go about any pruning/wiring in future given that they are vines, and shoot up? Curious because I have a vine seedling as well.

    • @OddBonsai
      @OddBonsai  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      When it comes to Wisteria I only have experience based on the full size one that I'm growing in my garden. But judging from its growth pattern I will probably let the seedlings grow undisturbed (no pruning) for one or two years until they gain some vigor as they seem to start off as slow growers. Once the plant gains some vigor it grows like crazy and it will need constant pruning through the growing season to keep it in shape.
      So in short: I will let them grow freely until next summer. Around the end of the summer next year I will probably cut them back hard to start the development of the trunk. And we'll see what comes next...
      When the plant is still in its skinny seedling state you usually want to let it thicken up before starting the actual shaping process with pruning and wiring.
      Hope this helps!
      Cheers,
      Stefan

For best results it is said that it's best to stratifu them at a temperature below 5 deg. C for about a month. So if you collect them in autumn you could keep them in the fridge for a month to simulate winter dormancy. But if you're not in a hurry I suggest that you let them hibernate naturally and collect them in late winter or early spring.

      I care for it like I do for other plants. Water it whenever it needs water (usually when the top layer of soil starts to dry up), fertilize it and that's about it for now. When it gains vigor I'll also trim it to keep it in shape.

    Oh my goodness… I have no clue what I got in the mail…
    My seeds were SOOOO much smaller than these…. Almost like popcorn kernels. Only Two have now sprouted, (both are growing in the same tiny planter, together- now at about 2”.) I literally have no clue what I’m caring for! I need help… I really do. I mean, I still have a ziploc baggie over the little planter… no clue on when to take it off! Help! Someone! Anyone! 😪😭🥺
    Adding - I’ve had it about a month! It has been placed by a window with “Indirect Sunlight…” so the sun never shines directly on it…I wish I could leave a pic!

    This just reminded me that I was given wisteria seed pods last year and need to plant them now. What direction does the seed pod get planted in after at sprouts? It looks like they were put in with the sprout portion facing down. Is the sprout the root or the plant? If it’s the plant I would think it needs to be facing upward when planted.

    • @OddBonsai
      @OddBonsai  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The sprout is the root so it will want to grow downwards. The leaves of the plant will grow after that from inside the seed.

      Since I just germinated my wisteria seedlings this year I can not estimate how long it would take for them to mature and bloom.
      The closest thing to what you are asking about is the experience that I had with my garden wisteria which was propagated from a rooted cutting about 1m high. It took maybe 2 years for the first flower to appear, and maybe after 2 or 3 more years it was already producing a lot of flowers in spring.

    do the wisteria have a strong smell I'm doing the paper towel method and I'm not sure if there moldy or just naturally smell strong, and do you know how long they take to germinate I put mine in the baggy a week ago and haven't seen any growth?

    • @OddBonsai
      @OddBonsai  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't remember the smell of the soaked seeds being particularly strong. I would say it was similar to other large seeds that I've germinated, like an acorn, if you ever tried germinating one of those. If the seeds are viable you should first see them swelling up and then you should see the embryo cracking open the outer shell of the seed. As you can see in the video some of my seeds sprouted in a bout a week while others took a little bit longer. Do you open the bag occasionally to let in fresh air? This is important to avoid molding.

    • @OddBonsai

      Did the seeds swell up at least a bit? Was there any change in appearance? Viable seeds will swell up during soaking as the embryo gets hydrated. Unfortunately, many online sellers have old seeds that are not viable anymore. If this is the case with your seeds, they will most likely start to rot.

    • @OddBonsai
      @OddBonsai  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I cannot say for sure without actually seeing what you have but I think it's most likely sings of fungus or rot. Did you open the lid of the container regularly to let in fresh air?
      I recommend that you take out the seeds and rinse off the whit stuff and examine the seeds. You can plant the ones that have started to germinate. If there are any seeds that are getting soft, mushy and smell bad, those were probably not viable and have started to rot. So I would discard those and keep the healthy ones. Keeping them all together will also make the healthy ones rot. Good luck!

    So I tried this method but my seeds keep getting rotten or molding... What am I doing wrong?

    • @OddBonsai
      @OddBonsai  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the seeds are viable (i.e., not very old) then too much humidity could be the reason. However, in most cases the seeds themselves are the problem. If they are too old, they're virtually dead so like any dead vegetable tissue it will tend to mold once put in a humid environment. Unfortunately, many online sellers sell seeds that are too old. Not mentioning information like the seed collection date or at least the packaging date should be a first red flag about seed sellers.

      I collected the seeds in the video myself since we have plenty of wisterias growing in the area where I live so, unfortunately, I can't point to an online store where I know for sure they have good viable wisteria seeds. One online seed store that I trust to generally offer fresh seeds and which also seems to have wisteria seeds on stock is this one: www.rarepalmseeds.com/wisteria-sinensis?search=wisteria. The downside is tat they are oriented more toward wholesale so they don't have such good prices for small quantities and they also have a minimum order policy.

    • @OddBonsai
      @OddBonsai  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Too much moisture and too little fresh air usually encourages mold. In my case, letting the jar "breathe" every day or so helped in keeping mold away. If germinating in a jar like I did in the video did not work for you, you could try using the wet tissue approach. If that doesn't work either then I suspect the wisteria seeds could be too old and have lost their ability to germinate .

Was the temperature the same like it was the first time you tried it? Keeping the seeds in a wet environment at a temperatures that is too low or too high for germination could also lead to them rotting. Hi.
    When would you recommend removing the pods from the tree

      I would remove them in winter until early spring. Once weather starts to get warm the pods pop open so you might not find any seeds in them.

      There are many sellers online. Just search for "wisteria sinsensis seeds".

    Clump those seedlings together and let them grow wild so the trunks would thicken and fuse together into a nejikan

    Where can i get seeds like these? I just have a fear of buying from a seller that might not be reputable.
