  • For much of its history though, this village supported a mainly agricultural community. From the late 17th century until the early 20th century many residents were employed in the local mining industry Today, whilst still having a rural agricultural feel, the village supports many trades as well as housing for people who work in Leeds and York.
For a time the Manor was in the ownership of the Gascoigne family. That’s a familiar name around here. You may recall them from the Parlington and Lotherton episodes. That’s why part of the village bears the Gascoigne name. If we’re talking major historical figures, you also can’t leave out William of Orange
Some scholars believe that the capital of the kingdom of Elmet was at or close to here. There are some bits of evidence which suggest this might well have been the case. Hall Tower Earthworks are made up of a huge mound and a circular ditch which originally comprised part of a large Iron Age fort centred on Wendel Hill. The site was later a Norman motte-and-bailey castle.
The Gascoigne Arms claim the maypole here is the tallest in Europe. Every three years, the maypole is lowered, inspected, maintained and re-erected for the maypole festival celebrations. During the raising ceremony, it is tradition for a local villager to climb all the way to the top of the pole, to spin weather vane, in the shape of a fox - a custom thought to bring good luck to the village
And all of that is only within one part of the parish. You have to then factor in its near neighbour with it’s World Peace Flame…because this is BARWICK IN ELMET AND SCHOLES.

Thanks for this lovely film. I moved to Barwick aged three weeks old in 1962 and my Dad still lives there now. It is a constant in my life, even having moved to London. Still, I learned a few things from your diligently researched piece. One thing that strikes me coming back once a month, as it does you, is how eerily quiet it is! Wasn't like that back in the 1970s when me and me tearaway 11 year old mates were charging about the place. As for the village hall, it put on weekly discos in which we busted our moves to the Jackson Five, T-Rex, etc, on the parquet floors.

Great video. I know the place well. Born in Garforth many moons ago. Worked for 4 years on Throstlenest Farm, halfway between Garforth and Barwick, opposite the Golf Course. Now I reside in New Zealand. Enjoyed your videos of the surrounding villages. Well done, keep up the good work.

I used to drive through Barwick regularly and never knew about the earthworks. Thanks for showing us round this interesting area.

There used to be giant mushrooms at the maypole bus stop. Gone now.
