Apologies for the late reply! Maybe you worked it our by now...but for me it was about making the drink more accessible to a home audience. If you use simple at home - go for it. it will save a load of time. Also though, I really like the sharp Herbert flavour you get from using caster sugar.
What's the difference between a Tom/John Collins and a Gin Fizz? I know there are many versions of Gin Fizz that have egg white or something else, but if you just make a simple Gin Fizz with gin, lemon, syrup/sugar and soda, is there really a difference between the two?
A Tom Collins is served on ice, whereas a gin fizz is shaken and then served up. A gin fizz with egg white is called a silver fizz, and once you have that you can also add cointreau to make a white lady.
Fizzes were also known to be served in shorter glasses and traditionally served with no ice. But like so many other cocktail-isms that's been forgotten along the way too!
@UCHv-bCxBP_RJmK2Vm0Scs0g We believe that the drink name comes from an old game that bartenders used to play on their guests in New York. The Tom Collins game. Check it out. Great vid from the educated barfly: th-cam.com/video/eHXwbGV0ZnQ/w-d-xo.html
There is an "old" saying in the branding world that goes a bit like "why should you call something by its generic name when you can insert your brand name there instead".
They are VERY similar, but there are some key differences too! A Tom Collins is served with ice in a Tom Collins glass, while a gin fizz is served without ice, in a smaller glass. There are also more variations on the gin fizz, such as the Ramos Gin Fizz: th-cam.com/video/Y8mwi0Wjdek/w-d-xo.html
That's a fantastic drink! And it's fine with Bombay Saphire, but in Menorca we make a version of it that we call "Pomada". It's basically exactly the same drink but we use our proud local gin called "Gin Xoriguer" instead of Bombay, and its aromatics give the drink a wonderful flavour that combines with the citrus perfectly. It's probably the island's most popular choice of drink, and rightfully so. If you ever visit Menorca don't forget to order a Pomada anywhere you go for a drink. Or if you ever get your hands on a bottle of Gin Xoriguer (beautiful bottle, by the way) this is the drink you have to make with it. You'll enjoy it very much.
Which is why the video description says "This is a paid ad by Bombay Sapphire". However, i actually like the John Collins with Bombay more than with Old Toms. Just add a dash of angostura on top and you are good to go.
Summer cocktail recipe on October 21st. Just in time :)
It's always summer in our hearts 🌞
Jamie Oliver's Drinks Tube haha Im all for that!!
Just in time for Australians.

WAHOOOOO!
Tom Collins is like a mojito without the trouble. :)
Hahaha - that's a good way of putting it!
It's late October - the cocktails should be ~spooky~
Don't worry Harry - we've got you covered, check it out! th-cam.com/video/GvaomXK4Ah0/w-d-xo.html
Harry Sargent add 🍊 and a spider
Why do you use caster sugar instead of simple syryp? Wouldn't it give a more clean result? Just curious :)

I was thinking the same thing. caster sugar is widely available in the UK but one rarely finds it on store shelves in the USA
Winter in the northern emisphere is summer in the southern one.
Best drink ever

10/10 Magic Vibrations!

If you use normal Gin its called John Collins, for a Tom Collins you use Old Tom Gin!
You are correct, it's even on the backside of the bottle, they call this the "Bombay Collins".

Jamie Oliver's Drinks Tube Thank you for your answer and awesome videos !!!
Thank YOU for being awesome Evgeny!
Love the drink ... just need to use our jigger that has both metric and the US system with ounces.
Gotta ask for a question, the soda water with or w/ suger? or just normally soda water
Just standard soda water will do!
Jamie Oliver's Drinks Tube Ok!
Dude, all the references to summer but it's now the end of october. Did someone forget to press the upload button earlier in the year ( -, -) ?
That's what I said!
Drinks tube is the best :) Kinda weird to see a tom collins so late in the show but still good

Mmmm - sounds delish Miquel!
You're alive!!
He's alive and kicking and shaking!
Egg white?
I love a fresh Tom Collins, but it would've been nice to explain what a Collins glass actually is. :) Is it a particular size or form or...?
A Collins glass is basically just a regular glass tumbler that can hold around 300 to 410 millilitres.
Tall and thin too!
I love this channel!
Thanks dude! Big love straight back to you x
Next time please give Imperial measurement equivalents in addition to your metrics ….we do not use ml measurements in the USA. Thanks.
But.... but.... its october...
True... all the more reason to cling onto summer!
Its summer in one half of the earth
We did film this in March... Summer was still to come! ;-)
He looks like Lane Pryce
?
too bad its winter now
But it's summer in the southern hemisphere!
it isn't a tom collins without old tom gin. it's a john collins.
That's just a marketing scam. Use any Gin you want.
cuz bombay sapphire is definitely a whiskey right
rich are you rich??
I mean this looks great and all but let's all admit it, no one's going to do it this time of the year.
Sevi Kazantzidi I'll do it 😉
Our friends in the southern hemisphere might!
"I'm using bombay sapphire, because its owned by bacardi..."
like all the other drinks tube products ;)
but thats none of my business
