The shorter, sound-focused format is nice (no 30 minute rambling and hand-waving video), but talking about build quality and fit/comfort is still important. Since you script your videos and read from notes, something even just 1-2 minutes long talking about materials and any great things or notable problems in this area is still really appreciated. As always, a great review without any excessive hype - even if it is eerily like someone else's review BUY THIS IT'S GOOD...two in a row, if it becomes three I'll be worried :)
I know you aren’t exactly like Tyll but I am encouraged that Audeze sent you these and is already quoting you from this review on their page for these cans, I think they recognize you are one of the best objective reviewers particularly when it comes to dissecting the sonic aspects of a headphone. I’m pretty sure yours is the ONLY review right now available - in fact, I looked for reviews on TH-cam just about an hour ago and didn’t find this, I only found it after someone linked you on the HF thread for these - about 10 minutes after I had bought them. 😂
metal571 I trust it was mission accomplished, I read you musing out loud on reddit that you had become hype machine man lately and wondered if you had been too positive about these then listened to them again and decided your assessment had been accurate. While it’s funny you have had two very recent reviews now that are highly positive, I remember some of the headphones you’ve absolutely slammed, lol, cuz some were ones I have and like (*cough* Nighthawk *cough*) so I have no doubt that if it failed to impress you would have said so. 👍🏽
Zoltán Katona doubt it, I’ve watched many of his reviews - and he makes money as a software developer, he doesn’t need to shill for an audio company to pay his bills 😂
@@Sineseol you should read what I wrote as a reply on your other spammed comment about this being a paid review to understand my process better. I don't want or need the money for this.
Bought these on your recommendation. After my ears broke in over a week, everything you say here is correct. Felt like I could trust you after the M50X review since you heard it so exactly to myself. To anyone buying this, especially from consumer-centric cans: give it a little time for your ears to break in. The hard edges wear down and they don’t shy away from any part of the frequency response. They’re a brilliant option for those who want to listen off their phone without the means for an amp, or who want a first-taste of reference class sound. I don’t consider the Sundara/660s in the price class because they require more power...they also aren’t nearly as portable. These pack away with minimal footprint.
It's not perfect as there's still that 2k dip and some slight shout at near 3k, with some estat-like slight downshelf in the low bass, but it's really quite close to neutral as a studio tool, and using the new Reveal+ preset with it fixes all of that. Sundara isn't easy to drive at all like these are, indeed. It's a bit of a weird product but it accomplishes what it has set out to do very well.
@@metal571 Yeah I agree on what feels like a slight 3k shout. It's very similar to the PXC550 and makes compressed popular music a little intense. That being said, it edged off as my ears adapted to the signature and I find it barely an issue now. I prefer the detail it brings out over that area being smoothed off, which would probably make them boring. It's a peak "with a purpose" lol. I found the intensity to be less due to the high mids/treble measuring any louder, but more due to the remarkable detail and speed it has in that area. I just wasn't used to hearing high-frequency sounds that fast and clean. The LCD-1 also has the presence area pushed and it can sound forward as a result. I wanted a HP to "grow into" and this is very much that. I see people coming from $1000+ cans and being very "Meh", like sound quality at desktop with an amp is the only legitimate measure of a headphones' value. I can't tell you how convenient it is to just grab this and my phone and go sit in any quiet room. Excuse the spiel and thanks a ton for the review :)
Holyy... I have been searching for a new pair of headphones to just chill at home to keep my X2's at the desk for multimedia. And was just looking for a deal on hd650/660s and also considering the iSine 10, but nowwww i think i just found the perfect contender. And they dont need that much amping.. well done audeze, giving a great sound for this price. That was already needed, instead of just launching 1000€+ headphones.
@@nhatlam96 Ah haven't used my hd 650s for a while now 😂. These completely replaced them for the past month and a half. I'll have to listen to them back to back again for about a day and I'll give you my thoughts
I can confirm metal's point. The soundstage isn't any wider than that of the 650s . So you would find it just as claustrophobic . However I really liked them for orchestra music as the imaging was so precise.
No idea if you will see this, but just got my LCD-1's very recently and your EQ has helped massively in the mid range so I really appreciate it. Good review too!
Great review as always. How do these compare to the Argon Mk 3s with protein pads? I mainly listen to rock/metal but practically listen to every genre except country lmao
This looks to be a fantastic value proposition! I like the sound of some of the big LCD headphones but find them to be too big and heavy for comfort and they are very expensive. These are very well priced and seem to be much more compact and light. One thing I would request is a bit more on the build and construction, I always value your opinion on the overall design and build too.
How do they compare with the LCD 2 classic in detail ? Also if they are very easy to drive did you had to lower the gain on 789 in order for them to sound right ?
No the LCD1 treble is more detailed than the Senns, but the midrange is not. These are separate things. LCD2 mids are more withdrawn but also more liquid and detailed. Detail is of course not FR at all. More bass resolution on LCD2 with more slam and extension also yes
For anyone interested: the fuzziness that you can hear in the vocals is probably caused by the frequency response of this particular headphone. I used EQs from other youtubers (metal571, Chrono from The Headphone Show), but the fuzziness was still present. To be completely honest I use LCD-1 directly from my phone (OnePlus 6 without any dac/amp, so nothing special) and I use USB Audio Player PRO with the additional plug-in Morphit. I use the plug-in to make my LCD-1 sound like "Generic Studio target curve" with additional boost in the bass region (analog bell 30 Hz +2.0 dB 1.00, low shelf 100 Hz +3.0 dB 1.00). I also decrease some sharpness in the treble region (analog bell 10 kHz -2.0 dB 3.00). I also subtracted 1dB in 3.5 kHz region to make the vocals be more smooth (analog bell 3.5 kHz -1.0 dB 1.4). Output level is -8.0 dB. Using Morphit (even without additional EQ) makes the vocals MUCH more transparent. It's now much better headphone (especially with the additional EQ). More bass (and punch to some extent), more details, more transparency in the vocals, even bigger soundstage. Maybe it's not that smooth as it was out of the box, but definitely worth checking it out. Hope this helped some LCD-1 users.
Yeah actually I had the same experience. Some time after this video, Audeze released a Reveal+ profile similar to the original one I created by ear and the upper mid "grain" was really just a peak around 3k. I maintain despite the crazy backlash around this video that this is still quite a good headphone if you need such a lightweight and easy to drive planar. Otherwise I'd choose Sundara
@@metal571 Hifiman QC issues stopped me from buying Sundara. I also wanted something really easy to drive just from my phone. The quality of the treble was also important for me (personal preference). Thank you for your review - it helped me a lot (alognside with Oluv's videos). Hope to see you back here someday!
Slightly better extension on the 2C and 2F, but other than that, the same quantity. Better microdynamics, aka "slam" on the LCD2 also, so better quality too.
@@NK9-i3l Bloom has started carrying Hifiman so I'm going to be doing a bunch of those, Arya included. I just heard Sundara, Arya, and Susvara back to back last week. For me, Arya was too bright around the usual 7k spot for Hifimans but detail was decently competitive. Sundara was the flattest headphone I've heard in recent memory actually, even moreso than LCD1 in the mids, which was a big surprise. But it can't compete with Arya in detail or stage. LCD-X vs Arya is a tough one. For me I'd probably go with a used 2018+ LCD3F so that you get the suspension headband around the $1200 price point. X is very good as well but if you don't need the efficiency, the 3 is probably the pick to go with... if you can deal with the weight.
metal571 Oww, 7k, 8k, or any of the uppers that produce sibilance would be hard on my ears. But EQing them down should help, I think. That’s what I did with some of the Fostex cans I owned. I do prefer ‘slightly’ boosted mids as they make things lively for me. But detail, soundstage, and imaging are something I definitely look at too. Bass is something I can’t live without, on the other hand. So LCD X, LCD 3F, or Arya now. You recommend the 3F; I hope I can find that on a good price (used) with recent warranty. Can’t wait for you to compete in your review. Given that, I’ll buy one of them over the deals week that’s coming up!
@@NK9-i3l For the 3F look for a suspension headband model to show up used somewhere around the $1200 price point, then buy with confidence since you'll also have the remainder of the warranty handed to you automatically.
Hi Metal, what do you think about Oluv's sound demo/ comparison with elex? Do these sound as boxy(ish) as it seems? I am looking to buy these to drive from my phone/tablet for plain music and movies, eq is too much hassle when it comes to mobile devices. Also is the sound stage too bad compared to 598s? I love the layed back sound on those. Any othe suggestions will be helpful as well. Thanks.
They don't sound like his sound demo to me. For some reason his demo makes them sound piercing and that's not the case at all as the upper register is quite relaxed but very detailed in classic Audeze fashion. I don't actually have a 598 on hand but the upshot is these best a 650 in imaging but not width.
A few months into these and still in love. I feel like I know what they’re going for now: they sort of contain the music (not in a bad way) to a bite-size packet that’s easily digestible but with all of the beautiful detail, timbre and imaging intact. Absolutely not for people who dislike intimacy, but they are far from “playing inside your head”. The way some sounds shoot off into the distance shows they have some great staging, but 60% of the music is pretty close to the head. There’s great presence. After trying a few more cans it’s become clear to me how awesome the FR is. Nothing feels disconnected and all frequencies are treated with equal aplomb. Being able to run these so easily is a major plus and Audeze really nailed it with comfort. I’d like to get the HD600 eventually, but interested in your thoughts on the differences? I know the 600 will be harder to drive and with a different timbre, but has anything toppled the Senns for you yet?
@@metal571 Main thing that kept me away from the Sundaras was the build. I've had cans fall apart before and it's always before you're "done" with them. US/German/Romanian-made is just so much more enticing to me than risking a bad build, especially for how notorious HifiMan is. I'm being very "un-audiophile" by avoiding amp requirements as much as possible lol. They get far too obstructive to my use case. Makes me wonder what out of 560s/660s/600/650 would run better unamped.
660S would just barely scrape by without an amp, it runs just ok from my phone but not super loud. 600 and 650 are definitely unusable, quite hard to drive. Haven't heard the 560S
@@metal571 Thanks on the super quick response man! I'll look further into it then. Looking to go open-back for my work (from home) 'phones to shake it up a little. Would use LCDs but they're my critical/musicmaking cans ha. I guess something like the ATH-A990z might fit too, since the 900x got such a nice review. Absolutely heartbroken that the K371s don't seal/fit on my head at all!
@@loganpreshaw4430 900X/990Z is a bit of a weird fit but worth a shot, really unique kind of sound and just oh so smooth upper mids. I still have my 900X, it's a special one
Great review. Any chance you could provide info on earpad size/measurements (depth and height)? Really interested in picking one of these up but I'worried about the size of those earpads which seem to really affect long-term comfort for me.
WOW!!! I was JUST about to press the "buy" button on Thomann for the HD-600. But NOW...hmmm...this is almost annoying :-) I need good headphones for mixing while on the move...hope they show up fast here in Europe and the price is comparable to the HD-600! Thank you very much for the review!!! So my question to you, metal571 would be: Which of the two would you recommend for neutral sound and mixing duties?
Having had the LCD-1 for maybe 4 months now, I can say that I'm still fairly happy with it, especially for the money. The treble is a bit eye opening when you compare to some of the Sennheiser cans (in a good way, it's really detailed and crisp, but doesn't really fatigue me which is really nice). Soundstage is similar to my HD6XX (meh), but with better imaging. Bass is pretty good, extended, but not really dynamic / impactful. Fit isn't perfect for me. I think the pads are a little thin and the opening is probably smaller than I'd prefer. They can be a little squeaky on the head. Interestingly, I think due to liking the timbre on these, I'm probably not looking at the larger LCDs for my next headphone as they're a bit... off. Probably ZMF. . Psst. Metal... when are you getting your hands on the Verite Open / Closed? Would be interested to see what you think about the mids and whether they might be a little too forward, especially compared to the Auteur / Aelous. I think we have similar mid-range preferences (I also listen to metal for at least 70-80% of my music).
Very much the same thoughts as me there. Glad they are holding up so far - don't forget to try the Reveal+ EQ preset to correct the FR the rest of the way. This channel is now permanently retired, but I'm still trying to get ahold of the two Verite models so Resolve and I can both talk about what we find in VO vs VC over at the headphone show channel or something like that
To clarify the beginning right up front: Audeze sends me headphones for review purposes only. I have never and will never take one of their review units and keep it for free. After the review is done, the review unit is returned to the manufacturer. If I want to keep the headphone around for comparison in the future or (rarely) personal use, I'll buy it myself with my own money. Some people got a bit confused about another point I made in the review at the end so I'd just like to reiterate: this isn't going to make me sell my 650. The timbre of that headphone is still unmatched. These offer a number of advantages over the 650 (better bass extension with less midbass hump, more detail specifically in the treble but not the midrange), but I'll let the community at large decide whether it's been dethroned. I'm not so sure personally. But I'd definitely buy an LCD1 over a 660S if you need an efficient open back. Thanks for watching, and remember to enjoy the music.
metal571 thanks I will just get this head phone & not the hd600 at all. Unless I get the hd600 in the future as 2nd reference headphones but that probably won’t be necessary since lcd1 is so good
Thanks man for your sympathy and your accurate comment. I am more and more convinced to take these headphones !! The only thing I ask you and I hope you have tried them can you compare them to the Ollo s4x my final battle and between these two
Hey metal, big fan of yours. Im familiar with the sound of the HD 650. I like the tone of it but i feel like the bass rolls off too much too soon and the treble is too dark. Do you think the LCD-1 is a good choice for someone whos looking for something similar to the HD 650 but with more bass extension and better air in the treble? Follow up question: I saw Oluv's impressions video and i'm nervous i might find these too bright; he described the treble as sharp, "razor-blade" like. I dont want this to slaughter my ears like the DT770, but i dont want it to be as dull as the PM-3. Let me know what you think. Thanks!
Would be interesting to see how the LCD-1 stacks up against the Mobius. They're both $399, have the same form factor, and are designed to be portable and more consumer based.
Sorry, belated comments from me in Australia. Thanks for this and all your reviews. I bought these hp’s (preorder) and like them. I like their low weight, comfort, form factor, versatility and the sound for the asking price. I got a 10% discount...better than nothing. They work very well with my PrimaLuna Dialogue HP integrated tube amp (stock tubes) in triode mode. I use them on portable devices also (versatility) with a dongle dac/amp and Radsone BT dac/amp, but they are much better with the PrimaLuna and Marantz CDP. I don’t really feel the need to EQ them. They compliment my Martin Logan EM ESL speakers. I’ve had pass me down Audio Technica electret and Stax Lambda HP’s. ‘Any whooo’, I just find the LCD-1’s (esp with the PrimaLuna) to be a very nice and balanced listen without having to put up with dinner plate sized and weighted monstrosities hanging on my noggin. 🙏
Yeah their weight is a massive plus. Sometimes I have to take breaks from my LCD2F to this day. I would still give the Reveal+ free plugin a try. Doesn't hurt to experiment
metal571 Thanks so much for your reply. I’m not sure about the reveal +, as it lifts the lower bass, but I like the EQ’s that you suggested in your review. I’m a bit old fashioned as I use CD’s...AMAZING 😉. I stream with my iPad (esp TH-cam). So, how would I use the reveal + please? I’d love to see you back doing reviews, but understand if you don’t want to. Thanks 🙏
@@dizzylizzy2851 EqualizerAPO. My newest settings in the description here are heavily based on Reveal+ now. You can just leave out the bass settings if you don't want it
Interesting review. I do not fully understand how impedance works. I would like to use the headphones with a digital piano, the impedance output of which seems to be around 47 Ohms. The Audeze LCD-1 seem to have a very low impedance (16 ohms). Would I be able to use the Audeze LCD-1 with profit, or should I go for something else, taking impedance into account? I read in places that the output impedance should be 1/8th of the headphones impedance. On the other hand, those who made the piano recommend their own headphones, which have the same impedance than the piano. This makes no sense to me, at the 1/8th rule does not seem to be applied here. If you could clarify this, that would be great. Thanks.
I'd be surprised if any digital piano specified the output impedance of its headphone jack. Most of the time it's not that spec at all but a "this can drive 47 ohm headphones" "spec" which means nothing because it does not specify sensitivity along with that impedance. Chances are good LCD1 will run just fine
@@metal571 I have been listening to more reviews and they have thrown some doubts over my selection. I am not so sure now. I was wondering whether you could give me a hand in selecting a pair of (preferably) open-back headphones under $600 (£500) to use with my digital piano. My piano is the Kawai ca58 which, according to the manufacturer, performs extremely well with headphones. The sound of the Kawai is very expressive, lively and rich. I would like to find these qualities when listening to the piano through the headphones. The impedance is about 47 ohms. I am still trying to find out from the factory what the output voltage of the headphone amplifier section is. I could let you know what it is if and when I get this info. I imagine that I will need a low impedance type of headphones, something easy to drive. The recommendations online is in the range of 35 to 65 ohms (the piano is supposed to have a switch to accommodate “high impedance” headphones, that is above 100 ohms. However, I am not sure what to think about this feature, whether one can rely on it or should rather ignore it). To help me select suitable headphones, I have been listening to many reviews, including yours, but I remain confused and unsure about what to go for, knowing also that the reviews are not targeted at users like me. So, if you could come up with one or two recommendations, that would be really, really helpful. Thanks :-)
@@gvan4730 one of the problems with this review was that I hadn't heard the Sundara yet lol. It requires a lot of power though, almost like an HD 650. Don't let the 32 ohm impedance fool you.
Nice review. How would you compare the treble to the dt 880 250ohm? I have fatigue after listening to those so i will upgrade. I listen through DF cobalt. Would theese be better then 660s for jazz, classical, gospel? Thks.
Sorta. Mobius and Sine and LCD1 all have a more similar tuning to each other while the LCD2 type of sound is a bit different and less neutral IMO. There are distinct advantages in bass quality, stage, and in the higher end big LCDs, detail, over these for sure.
Hey metal, love the detailed explanations in your vids. I'm torn between this, and the HD600 for mixing purposes on classic sounding techno/house, and would love your opinion on the matter. From what I've gathered these both seem quite neutral, but with better bass response and a great value on these LCD-1's. Most old school electronic music doesn't have much "modern" hi-end due to the equipment of the time, so the strength of the LCD-1 may not apply in that area. I like the idea of smooth high end on the HD600 as I'm quite sensitive to brightness, but I'm not sure if that is worth the loss of being able to hear the interplay between the kick&bass while mixing (LCD-1 major strength) due to the harmonic distortion on the HD600's (I believe you mentioned that it's still quite tight, but I'm curious if that's enough to mix such a heavy-leaning low end in electronic music). Just curious as to what you think the better choice would be :D Thanks!
I can say with some confidence as an LCD2F owner and prior LCD2C owner that your money is better spent on the LCD1, if and only if accurate natural FR is more important. Staging and dynamics are a mile ahead on the LCD2, but it also weighs far more and costs way more. I don't usually recommend buying LCD2 new at all. Get a used one if you want to try that at 650 bucks or less, which is what I did.
Why not work this thought into your review? Comparing lower, and higher cost models is the whole point of legitimate comparison, how else would anyone know what you are talking about? Silly audio terminology should be discarded, just say how it compares to KNOWN products.
@@valgehiir I did compare to known products. I figure a lot of people are not looking at the $1000 range if they're looking at this. They're looking at Sundara and 660S instead. I can't compare to every single known headphone there is, although the audience seems to have some kind of dream that I'll compare every headphone to every other headphone ever made. Not gonna happen. That's why I answer questions like these normally in the Q/As. You're welcome for the review you paid no money for.
I mean this is always a kind of dumb question to answer, but do you think it's "worth" paying three times as much for these as the currently on sale HE4XX? I'm kinda torn right now. Either I'm willing to spend 400$/€ on a headphone and go either for these or the HD 660S, or I just get the HE4XX for ~140€ and be happy with them. For reference my current daily driver is a Fidelio X2 which just feels to bass heavy to me and not enough detail and I also have a DT880 which I don't really like because it's just to bright and I definitely prefer a warmer sounding headphone. I've heard the 4XX described as bright, but also warm at the same time, so I'm not really sure what to make of it.
Value is quite subjective, but the advancements in grain and bass quality are totally worth it stepping from the 4xx to the LCD1 for me at least. The 660S is basically obsolete because of the Audeze. The X2 has always been a very grainy headphone, but apparently almost nobody else is able to hear that for some reason. The 4xx and DT880 are both brighter so it definitely sounds like the LCD1 is the right choice here. Could also go with a 6XX if you want to save cash but... for me the planar is worth it
how do you feel about these now ??, i have ordered these, but am on the fence to cancel the order because i am looking more likely in the direction at LCD2-C-ish in light weight model or maybe even the LCD-2C i really like the sound of the LCD-2 classic.
Thanks for the great review! What is the piece you mention at 8:10 that you use a lot for soundstage? Always on the lookout for good pieces to test headphones with.

How do these compare to the koss esp95x in overall resolution? I bought the koss esp95x, but I find the lack of treble resolution to be off putting. I'm looking for a reference can with overall good resolution. Transient response and soundstage. I already have the oppo pm3 and I love them, I don't even know why im buying another headphone, I think I just wanted a open back refence headphone. So what should I do, send the esp95x back and order these?
Wish I could tell you but my 95X is actually at Flux's right now. From memory these should best it in the treble resolution independent of EQ, but both benefit improve with EQ with the LCD1 being a little closer to my preference out of the box
@@metal571 I've spent some time with my esp95x, the headphones have dramatically improved in the treble from frequent use and burn in. These are definitely headphones that require burn in. Out of the box they sounded quite awful. But now I think I can safely say I'm satisfied with the sound of these headphones. The overall resolution is now up there with the best, the midrange is nice and flat, but the bass of course is still quite lacking. I'm hopeful that the custom leather pads from darin fong audio will clear up that problem. These are definitely headphones worth 1,000$ sound quality wise. Build quality wise...Not really. But i'm sure they will hold together for the times to come. If anyone buys these and isn't satisfied with the treble response, just let them burn in for awhile, the headphones will open right up.
@@metal571 I've heard the HE1 at NY soho, definitely a better headphone in overall fineness. But the difference isn't huge, the HE 1 signature wise are warm and sparkly, with a fast, punchy bass. Definitely a headphone for pleasure listening. These in comparison are flat, dry and a bit anemic in the lower bass. They are a bit slower too. But the way the sound presents itself is pretty much the same. Especially the soundstage. They both share that stat planar wave, the way the sound comes off as more natural and unrestrained. Unlike a dynamic headphone that sounds as if something is holding back the sound from fully expressing itself naturally. Or even a planar magnetic which sounds just a bit mechanical in nature. So I think I'm pretty much done with headphones. If I had the money, I might pick up an AKG k812 for it's sublime and well textured sound signature. I really don't want to sink any further into the whole e stat thing, buying overpriced amps and what not. The next audio purchase I plan on making is maybe a new set of studio monitors. Maybe some pioneer rm05s to replace my jbl lsr305s. As these headphones have shown me even more just how awful my speakers sound. They don't have nearly the resolution that these do.
Do you think this would be okay for an office environment? I listen fairly low-volume when concentrating , however I work in an open office environment (no cubicles just desks everywhere). I'm an IEM guy, my only cans presently are meze 99 noirs.
@@ChrisKeyman watch my review on them, price has nothing to do with sound quality anyway in terms of frequency response tuning as Dr. Olive has already proven
Hi there. I own Audio-Technica ATH-R70x and I like their sound signature . One thing is that the soundstage is quite narrow. Would you consider Audeze LCD -1 as an upgrade?
I also owned the r70x and despite their timbre/resolving quality being worse than a hd600/650 they sounded better than a stock hd650/6xx for me, cause' theyre not bassy sounding (prppably better acoustics with the cup design).
The strange thing when i put on this headphones everything sounds like listen to a analog vinyl stack is like magic,is like everything is so natural and warm with a kind of good presence of every thing and the heights is so good :)
A was expecting these to be an inevitable failure. But of course I want them now. I've been looking for a portable, openback planar that's not ridiculously power hungry (Sine) nor ridiculously expensive. Great honest review as always
Probably a daft question but seems a similar price point. How do these differ from my M100s? Been looking for a new set that beats them but for a good price. Can't see how anything can based on my sound perception, but I don't have too much experience
@John Cooke Excited in that case as I'm more a fan of bass extension rather than the amount of it. I realise these are open but the M100s I find to be quite on point clarity wise so I'll def have to give these a go. The Sennheiser Momentums I felt to be more forward and I did prefer them for the vocals but less so for the bass response so... So I may have contradicted my first statement lol
Will you be getting the monoprice m570 in for review? I just got them in the mail and they sound exactly like my Blon B20's. I'm glad I got to see you wear the k371. It explains why I have comfort issues and you don't. I have to have mine on almost the smallest setting and when I do the cups hit the inside of the hinge preventing them from going straight making more pressure on the top of the cups.
Apparently the M570 is just an Aiva underneath so I'm not surprised that it sounds pretty decent. Not sure if that's going to be on my radar as Max Settings already handled that review
@@metal571 I didn't happen to see one from him but I am still going to hope you get to them. I always appreciate hearing your take on headphones and thanks for another great review with this vid.
Hey Metal, can you recommend headphones in the $100-$400 range that are great for sub bass? I was looking at the AKG K712 PROs but I can't decide because there are so many headphones out there.
Wow this is huge. Should I sell the LCD2 Classics for these? I want to have a planar in my collection, but currently have Atticus and HD650 as well, maybe this would be a better complement FR wise? The LCD2C is not too different FR wise from the 650 and Atticus. Thoughts?
It depends. The FR might be better on this than the LCD2 but you will miss out on the bass impact and extension and the much larger stage the LCD2 has, which are things you can't correct with EQ
I dont know, what you have done for the last year, but i have sold my big heavy LCD2 Classics, and order a LCD1 yesterday, the LCD2C was very good in bass and soundstage but for me it was to heavy,i also have the DT770Pro and the HD600 so i hope that the LCD1 will be my portable in between headphone or a complement of them all :)
Muna same. I wish there was a vid discussing the two-they are very similar price wise, in design, both planars, and reputable companies I’m interested in
I ended up with a bad copy of the HE4xx and need to return. However, I realized the headphone is too small and clamping excessive for my big head. I am wondering if these are larger band and more comfortable. The Drop price on the HiFiman was great but not worth it to me if sound has issues or if they aren’t comfortable. I was thinking of the Sennheiser HD6xx but now this Audeze LCD 1 seems like it may be more worth the extra $. If someone could tell me if they think they be more comfortable for large melon headed people let me know.
Size of the head is probably not as much of an issue as ear size, as larger ears might be squished just a bit as this is an over ear headphone, but the pads are a little small for being over ear
@@MonroeYohey do not pad swap this headphone. Pad swapping is very common because of certain communities and channels I will not name, but it shouldn't be. If you want the intended sound from the manufacturer, leave the pads alone.
metal571 maybe I do, maybe I don’t. However they swap back easy enough. Sometimes the sound is better, sometimes it is worse but mainly it just ends up being different. Comfort matters though when listening to extended sessions. I couldn’t wear the hifiman 4xx it felt like my head was in a vise grip! Your point is taken though that on design and measurement that the stock pads are what see the intended result. However, it is like equalizing you are changing it to personal preference and sometimes it requires experimentation or reverting back to original.
Commenting to ask if anyone who ordered an LCD-1 got theirs shipped and delivered yet. I received mine just before noon today, and I'm honestly astounded how good they are for $399. Will be doing some extensive listening and I definitely want to share my impressions on the headphones subreddit.
Wow this was unexpected! Nice review! I was thinking about getting a LCD 2C, but this seems to be a good alternative. I wonder if the ear cups will be too small for large ears? They look a lot smaller than the big LCDs.
They're fine for me, seem to be around the same size as Mobius. This does not replace the big LCDs because they are still better in the bass and especially soundstage although their FR is more colored
Now that I own my own Mobius, I can say the mids are a little more neutral on it than LCD-1, so less 3.5k and better lead-up to ear resonance at 2k. But Mobius actually has a sizeable bass shelf that LCD-1 doesn't, and of course a smaller stage being a closed back and all.
Ive never really noticed the difference in sound between my 2 headphones(hd6xx,lcd2c) when wearing glasses. Mine are slightly thicker than yours. Are the pads glued ?
@@metal571 If the pads are glued, I guess that means they aren't removable right? I mean, genuine leather pads probably won't deteriorate for a few years at least, so maybe not a big deal.
@@divinecurrent9053 no they're replaceable. Most Audezes use glued pads, but they aren't impossible to remove by any means. Source: replaced a pair on an EL8 closed back once

Great review and thanks for what you do! Wow - this is surprising! Now I'm not sure what to recommend to people looking for the best open-back under $500, this or the HD 650/6XX. I might have to buy a pair of these simply to determine which is better (I already have the 6XX). I can just hear my wife now: "ANOTHER pair of headphones!!??" :D
Jen Soon Ng Seems that way, though metal said he still likes the sound of the dynamic drivers on the 650. I already have the 650 (6XX), so do I need this as well? Decisions, decisions.
Meh, not really. The timbre and instrument realism is still better on the 6x0 stuff. This is a great efficient headphone with *some* advantages over the Senn, but I still don't think it's a replacement for it. I think I'd buy this over the 660S though if you need something efficient, however.
I asked Audeze directly for that matter and this is what they responded : "from some quick caliper measurements I get the following for the LCD-1 earpads: inner dimensions: 65mm x 38.5mm outer dimensions: 94mm x 76.5mm pad height: 23mm " You're welcome

@@lrmcatspaw1 I would recommend that for anything you buy, if possible. See my LCD2 vs LCD2C review for thoughts on the FR. I review with the same target FR in mind for every review so that all of the reviews are comparable to one another
Hey metal can you review the skull candy crushers for it's bass performance. I mean i have these headphones but I want you to compare it's bass response with these high end headphones.
Sure that's easy. There's no comparison. Amount of bass in the skullcandy headphones is far too high. Bass *quality* is what audiophiles look for, not quantity, and that's where higher end reference headphones win out - especially planar magnetic open backs like these
@@metal571 so what headphones should I go for? If I want planar magnetic with good bass response. I want to buy some good pair of open back headphone with nice bass.
@@metal571 also I saw a review of yours on fostex tr-xoo ebony one. But they are sold out at present. So is the mahogany and the purpleheart one the same as the ebony one?
@@metal571 I have the LCD-2C and I was considering their LCD-2 closed back.... I know this isn't closed back. But would you suggest this over a differing variant? I mean I am honestly wanting a good closed back planar within this or a slightly higher price range. And I am a little unsure on what to go for... Any thoughts?
I can't think of a good closed back planar except Mobius, but it's not really the same thing, being BT and gaming-focused at the same time and not being able to operate in passive mode. That's why everyone is asking for LCD-1C.
It was overly positive. I'll have to redo the 1990 since it was hot off the heels of the awful 1770 and Amiron so it was a bit too biased in favor of Beyer, and has to be redone.
@@metal571 I already own 770, 990 and 1990 and I love 1990 but I would prefer a bit more sound stage like 990 got maybe even more. What would you suggest for up to $700 and how LCD-1 compare to 1990?
@@pajda102 pretty much everybody is asking me about the 1990, and I don't get it. It's a way overpriced headphone with annoying, sibilant treble that's less detailed than the 880. If you genuinely like the way the 990 sounds, and I say this with all seriousness, I probably can't help you because I can't stand that FR. The only thing I can say is to try the 880 600 ohm. The LCD1 is a completely, insanely different tuning that sounds much darker than any of the Beyers
I'm working on that. So far I think the Sundara has better mids in terms of tuning, a little more bass extension, more bass slam, a wider soundstage, but less detailed treble. It's a really interesting option and might just be the ticket for $50 cheaper if you already have an amp and don't need to travel with it.
Very agreed.
30 minute rambling and hand-waving, i know exactly what you mean.

I love the vibe dude, your reviews are top notch
I know you aren’t exactly like Tyll but I am encouraged that Audeze sent you these and is already quoting you from this review on their page for these cans, I think they recognize you are one of the best objective reviewers particularly when it comes to dissecting the sonic aspects of a headphone.
I’m pretty sure yours is the ONLY review right now available - in fact, I looked for reviews on TH-cam just about an hour ago and didn’t find this, I only found it after someone linked you on the HF thread for these - about 10 minutes after I had bought them. 😂
That was my goal, be the first person to give accurate info on it on yt
metal571 I trust it was mission accomplished, I read you musing out loud on reddit that you had become hype machine man lately and wondered if you had been too positive about these then listened to them again and decided your assessment had been accurate.
While it’s funny you have had two very recent reviews now that are highly positive, I remember some of the headphones you’ve absolutely slammed, lol, cuz some were ones I have and like (*cough* Nighthawk *cough*) so I have no doubt that if it failed to impress you would have said so. 👍🏽
Probably paid review.
Zoltán Katona doubt it, I’ve watched many of his reviews - and he makes money as a software developer, he doesn’t need to shill for an audio company to pay his bills 😂

Good review, though, of course.
I really didn't see it coming either
Speaking of Audeze, you guys should review the Audeze LCD - I3 IEM's. I'd love to hear you take on it.
They're getting closer and closer to what I waiting for from them... a noise-cancelling travel LCD.
@@bigshel99 That will be quite challenging for them to put their planar magnetic DNA into the nosie cancelling tech.
I'm not sure if anybody has actually attempted an ANC planar tbh
@@loganpreshaw4430 very much how I feel too. The air above 10k is just so well presented without fatigue. Enjoy

And they dont need that much amping.. well done audeze, giving a great sound for this price. That was already needed, instead of just launching 1000€+ headphones.

A little bit of EQ goes a long way, have fun
@@metal571 thank you kindly!
I like how you dressed up for your LCD-1 scoop review.
Thanks, I like my headphone shirt too
That smile on your face, says it all.
Wow, this is fast. I just read an article about Audeze-1's launch.
Also if they are very easy to drive did you had to lower the gain on 789 in order for them to sound right ?
they'll probably appear more detailed as they have more mid to upper mid range. but less bass resolution vs lcd2 probably.
How do you compare the bass of this to that of LCD 2 Classic in terms of quantity and quality?
Slightly better extension on the 2C and 2F, but other than that, the same quantity. Better microdynamics, aka "slam" on the LCD2 also, so better quality too.
metal571 I see. Now, I’m interested in getting the X or the Arya. Just thinking of keeping one high end (
@@NK9-i3l Bloom has started carrying Hifiman so I'm going to be doing a bunch of those, Arya included.
A lot harder to drive, LCD1 is very efficient. Sundara is what I'd pick over the Senns
Would use LCDs but they're my critical/musicmaking cans ha.

thx you very much for this hint. I plan to find a worthy more comfortable alternative for my hifiman he-6.

Hope you enjoy them as much as I do
I know this is a sound review, but you should put them on for 5 seconds to show the viewers how they look while wearing them.
This channel is now permanently retired, but I'm still trying to get ahold of the two Verite models so Resolve and I can both talk about what we find in VO vs VC over at the headphone show channel or something like that
Are you going to review the closed back LCD-2's by chance? would love to steal your EQ profile for them once you do.
Yep that's coming this upcoming week
Thanks for watching, and remember to enjoy the music.
metal571 maybe this headphone can help me perfect the bass in my mixes or maybe this is overall better then the hd600 as flat reference headphones?
Definitely in the bass since it doesn't have the HD 600 issue of a midbass hump
metal571 thanks I will just get this head phone & not the hd600 at all. Unless I get the hd600 in the future as 2nd reference headphones but that probably won’t be necessary since lcd1 is so good
If you listen just for music, gaming and for long hours (no mixing and monitoring at all), which one is better? LCD1 or 660S?
sbw94 probably the lcd1 because i read bad reviews about using the hd600 or HD650 for gaming.
If I have a fidelio x2hr, will this lcd-1 be an upgrade? Mainly use for immersive gaming and movies.
Thanks man for your sympathy and your accurate comment. I am more and more convinced to take these headphones !! The only thing I ask you and I hope you have tried them can you compare them to the Ollo s4x my final battle and between these two
"I've been playing with this headphone for about a week now."
Audiophile MKBHD?
Lol was wondering when someone was gonna notice that
Great review as always, I'd totally get these in the future.
Thanks!
LCD1 is right between the DT770 and PM3. It's detailed and not too bright so if that's what you're looking for without a bass boost, then that's LCD-1
@@metal571 thanks!
Would be interesting to see how the LCD-1 stacks up against the Mobius. They're both $399, have the same form factor, and are designed to be portable and more consumer based.
LCD1 better primarily in detail because open back, but it's also passive. Sound in terms of FR is pretty similar to what I remember from Mobius
I sold the Mobius because I could not get used to the clamping force, waaay too much for me.
@@metal571 Thanks so much for your reply. I follow your videos with interest :-)
Thks.
Good move Audeze. Will this become the gateway drug to the BIG LCD's?
maols43 I think so.
Sorta. Mobius and Sine and LCD1 all have a more similar tuning to each other while the LCD2 type of sound is a bit different and less neutral IMO. There are distinct advantages in bass quality, stage, and in the higher end big LCDs, detail, over these for sure.
Thks for the review...SQ wise, better than the Sendy and Sundara?
Just curious as to what you think the better choice would be :D
Thanks!
i would take this over the 600, as long as you integrate the audeze reveal plugin with your daw. that is very close to a perfect FR in my opinion
Are the difference(s) between the LCD2 Classic and these worth $200-$400 dollars?
That should have been the only point of this review.
Could also go with a 6XX if you want to save cash but... for me the planar is worth it
Thank you for the recommendation. I received these yesterday and am quite satisfied. These are a great buy.
how do you feel about these now ??, i have ordered these, but am on the fence to cancel the order because i am looking more likely in the direction at LCD2-C-ish in light weight model or maybe even the LCD-2C i really like the sound of the LCD-2 classic.

Now you just need a SR007 lol. Craziest stat I've heard aside from Shang-ri La. Haven't heard HE60, HE90, or HE1 yet unfortunately

So I may have contradicted my first statement lol

metal571 thank you so much
I ended up with a bad copy of the HE4xx and need to return.
Size of the head is probably not as much of an issue as ear size, as larger ears might be squished just a bit as this is an over ear headphone, but the pads are a little small for being over ear
metal571 I prefer over the ear but I can deal with on ear if the sound is great! Have you tried any pad swaps and determined change in sound?

Very similar to Mobius on default EQ, but better stage and detail
Now that I own my own Mobius, I can say the mids are a little more neutral on it than LCD-1, so less 3.5k and better lead-up to ear resonance at 2k. But Mobius actually has a sizeable bass shelf that LCD-1 doesn't, and of course a smaller stage being a closed back and all.

The LCD1 is a completely, insanely different tuning that sounds much darker than any of the Beyers
kinda looks like an open back wired mobius headphone thoughts?
It is loosely based on it so yes
Do you have a measurement using your Eq APO preset by chance?
Thank you for confirming that I need to buy these cans.
Lemme know what you think
this or sundara?
I really liked the Sundaras but these are going to be way easier to drive
I'm working on that. So far I think the Sundara has better mids in terms of tuning, a little more bass extension, more bass slam, a wider soundstage, but less detailed treble. It's a really interesting option and might just be the ticket for $50 cheaper if you already have an amp and don't need to travel with it.
How do these handle EQ? Do these have the low harmonic distortion levels of something like the lcd2?
Very well and yes
