#40Cal #DoubleTap #Hardcast
After pouring over the numbers, I found that the Alpha Wolf Barrel had an average of 990 Fps for the 200Gr hardcast loads compared to an average of 981 Fps for the Stock Glock barrel. That's an average of 9 Fps more out of the Alpha Wolf Barrel compared to the Stock Glock. And for the Blazer 180Gr FMJ loads; an average of 1011 Fps with the Alpha Wolf Barrel, and an average of 991 Fps with the stock Glock barrel. That's a difference of 20 Fps more out of the Alpha wolf Barrel.
Thought I'd share!
Is that good or nominal? A few fps
This is why I switched from 10mm to .40 S&W.
Lighter smaller frames (Glock 22) in my case.
The.40 performance is nearly identical to the 10mm in my testing with my hand loads.
What I noticed is my 200grn 10mm loads @1300fps hit so hard they actually deform even the hardest of Hardcast just enough on impact that it mushrooms just a bit more slowing penetration.
My .40 200grn loads clock 1150fps and penetrate nearly as deep as the 10mm everytime
That's interesting, thank you for sharing! The .40 is not to be looked over, it's a great round
Why a Glock 35 is my primary woods carry. Double tap may be what I swap to. Depends how G9 does.
Why did you only try one Blazer round? Keep doing what you are doing. Nice video with good info.
I think if you hang a curtain of four layers of bath towels behind your final board, you may be able to recover more of your pass throughs.
I have 3 40sw sidearms. A mp m2.0 with a 5” barrel that I wouldn’t hesitate to carry in bear country. That long barrel gets that extra performance out of those rounds. I also have a Springfield xdm 4.5 and a g23. All are great sidearms ! Nice video.
I agree!
That wide frontal area of the bullet looks prone to jamming up the gun. I think I would rather have a traditionally shaped FMJ or hardcast for reliability
Love 40 cal, I'd definitely trust it for black bear or big cats but from testing I've done I'll stick with 10mm, 44, or my 454 for grizz. 40 would probably work definitely better than alot of other rounds. I use my hand loads in 10mm so i know im getting real 10mm power.
Excellent ---- you've done a great review
Thank you!
You are a good man who demonstrates integrity by recognizng your mistakes in your video reviews and taking corrective action. That is something that truly establishes credibility on your part. Now I'm a subscriber. I'll go through your entire playlist and look forward to more to come. Keep up the good work.
Just purchased some double tap hard cast 180 gr. 357sig rounds
Great test, doubletap makes a new 50 round box of 180 grain bonded defense. They are different than the 20 round which are brass case w/ xtreme x-def bullet. The 50 round box come nickle cased with gold dot bullet. Would love to see you test them. I'm very curious if doubletap is exaggerating their fps. I carry a gen 4 glock 23
I use Underwood 180 FMJ for my Glock 24 woods gun. I can’t say I have killed a black bear with it, butfrom your test, I am now even more confident that I will have enough backup fire power. Underwood claimes 1100 fps, but with the Glock 6.02 inch barrel, I am getting closer to 1200 fps. These flat nose FMJ will compress a little, but not much at all. $48 for 50 rounds.
Great video. Thanks... I'm a 180gr .40"S&W fan boy, particularly out of a Glock gen2/gen3 pistol (mostly Mods 23 and 27 for EDC and lately Mod 35 for fun...). It's been very consistent and accurate since 1990. It's been my one shop stop gun/ammo for anything and everything, and just can't see a reason to change anything.
One advantage of the hardcast bullet over the FMJ is the wide flat meplat on the front of the Hardcast will tend to do more damage than a FMJ. It was hard to be sure but it looked like the Hardcast cut a cleaner hole in the plywood than the FMJ
That's a good point, thank you for bringing that out. It was close but I do think the Hardcast did slightly better overall.
@@JepsOutdoorAdventures also, the hard cast is harder and with deform less then FMJ, FMJ has a soft lead core
Yes, the cast bullet will generally have a wider meplat than the FMJ. May not penetrate quite as far, but will open a larger wound channel given similar velocity.
Big! 40s&w Glock fanboy here. I am loading a 180 fmj with a 5.85in. barrel and a custom four port brake to 1375 fps. with my gen3 Glock 22.
I will never use a Alfa Wolf barrel for 10,40 & 45 with hardcast bullets. I have read & talked to people that have loaded hardcast to Doubletap, Underwood pressures and have ruptured their barrels and some have destroyed there guns.
KKM barrels for all my zesty loads.
Boy howdy, that's squarely into 10mm territory! If I calculated correctly that's hitting with 755 ft/lbs. That's a hot load for sure. I haven't had a problem with the barrel but that's good to know, thank you.
@CharlyRomeo2009: it wasn't that hard of recoil. Custom DPM recoil system and brake work great!!!
My brass was ejecting about 1-1 1/2 ft.
@@JepsOutdoorAdventures : I have only pushed my 10mm longslide to 1550ish. with a 180fmj.
I had been using Alfa Wolf barrels in my 22,10mm & 45acp longslides.
I had a friend blow up his gen3 21 loading hardcast to Doubletap specs... Check out Glock Talk.
I sent my 10,40&45 back to Lone Wolf for a refund.
I kept my 9mm AW barrel figured it had plenty of material under those STUPID flutes.
CharlyRomeo2009 don't call a grown man "babe". It doesn't make you look to good. Besides, he can do whatever he wants. I wouldn't want to push my 40 into that power range, but it clearly works for him. I have shot a subcompact 10mm with hot loads before and it was just fine. I see no reason a full size 40 would be any different.
There's also conversion kits for 460 Rowland that takes a 45ACP and amps it up past 1,300 fps and hits with over 900ft/lbs compared to maybe 400 ft/lbs from hot 45 ammo. I know guys who have them and they work great. Even out of Glocks. So although It's taking a risk, If done properly it can work.
I'm late to the party but..great video and testing; Just wondering who is the company that makes the bullets..they sims to have a very wide and sharp meplat..it would be great can find a mould too
Thanks! And yeah, I'd like to know too. They look great. I wonder if DoubleTap makes them in-house.
Hello Jeff did you try the same load with 10 mm? You plan on it in the future? I know you did the Buffalo board Underwood hardcast loads for 10 mm . Thank you for all your time and effort you put into these videos.
I'll look into it! It will have to wait until next year though to rest them because of the weather 👍
And thank you, I really appreciate that
Well done thank you, Sir
No problem, thank you!
Will this not lead up a glock barrell ?
I've shot a ton of lead and hard cast bullets in my Glock 22. The
Big issue is velocity. Barrel
Cleaning is a must if you are
Going to switch back and forth
Between copper and lead bullets.
great video, right on time !! 😈
Thanks. Good representation
That is 20 plus alloy lead, needs a gascheck, good performer those heavy ones,I think in this same test with the Fort Scott 125 it would penetrate as deep but the jugs would be dancing.Good job
Isn't the fort Scott that tumble upon impact stuff? 🤔 wouldn't want to shoot a bear with that.
Most of the time Jep powder is slower in cold weather. How much depends on the powder type. Ball powders in rifle are usually more temperature sensitive than extruded(stick powder). Factory powders aren't usually as temperature sensitive as reloading powders we buy. Because factories have their own mix usually that we haven't access to. I'm running Underwood 147 +p hardcast in 9 and 255 gr +p in 45acp. Haven't chronographed either yet, but the 255 hardcast 45 acp is very very accurate out of a G30 gen4. Possibly one of if not the most accurate rounds I've shot in 45acp. If you get a chance to test these I'd be interested.
Great job on the video!
Keep'em coming!
The terminal ballistics won't be the same though. You're going to want that extra 20gr of bullet weight if for no other reason than the extra energy dump
Everything else being equal the lighter bullets will goo faster.
Actually the double tap is a weak loading for a hardcast round!
It worked quite well to me. I do prefer the Underwood 200gr hardcasts I just tested, but both are fine in my opinion. But anyway, that's just my two cents! Thanks for watching
@@JepsOutdoorAdventures Did you test the velocity of the Grizzly round.
Sorry-no way a FMJ is the same as DT’s hard cast
FMJ will work IF you don't have HARDCAST and you can't get your hands on any .
M O
Most of the hard cast bullets I see are shaped exactly the same as FMJ. If their shape the same they should perform the same
