Especially Xandria with Dianne van Giersbergen, or Ex Libris, now that she's out of Xandria. Shame about that...the new singer is not as good, to me, as Dianne.
I'm a big grown up man, and sometimes a little cynical and picky about my metal music... but when either of these dutch powerladies open their mouth and start to sing, my knees are getting weak. I mean, wow!
@@VaalAsgaard True, true! I would also like to add another dutch gem, Charlotte Wessels (Delain), to the list. There must be something magical in their drinking water in Netherlands. Would be fun also to see Beth's reaction to Myrkur :)
Simone and Floor are the queens of mix! Not only can they both switch their singing style in a split second, but they can blend them at any given moment in every possible way. This is the top. It does not get any better than this. Just wow!
That's what I love about these two ladies, they are so versatile. Symphonic metal is definitely the right genre for them, and it is just a wonderful experience listening to this music. I couldn't stop smiling at your enthusiastic reaction :)
So, this is my first time hearing Epica. This is a great review because you're the only vocal coach that actually sounds good when you're explaining how they sing. Great job, keep it up!
I know this comment is a year old, but i found Epica through an amv years ago, the first song i heard was the last crusade, it remains next to my favorite song by them (both versions of it) this song is probably my favorite if just for how good it sounds with floor in it.
If you like symphonic metal, you need to check out Within Temptation! The singer Sharon den Adel is not trained but she has a unique and beautiful voice! I recommend songs from their Elements concert: Our Solemn Hour (songs starts at 25:20) The Promise (at 1:01:10)
This is such a honed piece of perfection. Its like a laser intensive streak of perfection through all of the beautiful music that exists. Floor and Simone in their prime. In the future people will envy us for living at the same time. So glad Ibsaw Floor live in 22, whe will be an icon in music forever on.
2 powerful and talented ladies managing to hold your attention even backed by a 50 person orchestra. This is just a stunning performance and really appreciate your dissection.
Beth, you're a metal head at heart :D Floor is my favorite female metal singer since her days with After Forever (you should react to them by the way). Simone Simmons is so good as well. I had such a big crush on her during my 20's xD
I love Epica and this song so I'm happy you covered this one! I know you've had a look at Nightwish already but the live version of the islander from the tampere show is worth a look. It's one of those songs that focuses on Marco and his voice always blows me away.
1:30 Their flexibility between styles is something I've always found super impressive. Floor and Simone are really special for that. Epica uses it in their songs wonderfully. There is no shortage of material in which Simone is "flexing" or showing off this skill haha. Check out Chasing the Dragon, Unleashed, Tides of Time, Kingdom of Heaven, Serenade of Self Destruction, The Essence of Silence, Natural Corruption, In All Conscience, Once Upon a Nightmare, The Holographic Principle, Dedicate Your Heart. That's a list in chronological order of some of my favorites from them that showcase head voice. Most musicians/bands have one or only a few styles of vocals in their music. Epica is so interesting to me because Simone alone has some very contrasting styles, plus we have Mark's growls, and then various combinations of different sections of the choir (full choir, male only, female only, etc). Then when you consider that in their music any combination of these vocals might be coming in an out, sometimes in unison, sometimes call and answer, etc. etc. you see why Epica's music never gets old. There's a lot to digest with this stuff in the aforementioned songs.
I really feel like this is such a refreshing insight on all performers your reviewing. The way you describe techniques, your reactions, your great personality from what we see it’s just awesome I’ll like every video haha. Working my way threw your videos so far. I hope to get on the patreon eventually and get your take on a few songs. I have no doubt this channel will absolutely thrive because no one else is doing this so good! 🍻👍🇨🇦🤘💪
Your constant beautiful smile throughout this song is definitely how I feel when listening to these two beautiful ladies! For more Epica I would suggest "Unchain Utopia official live" And for more Nightwish I would suggest "Song of myself live at Wacken 2013." Also for them both together check out: Epica - Stabat Mater Dolorosa live at Retrospect. 😊
Somebody like dimash switches from classical voice to a pop voice between phrases. One phrase is pop the next phrase is classical. These two ladies were changing within phrases, like in the middle of phrases. That is very impressive.
somewhere around 3 minutes you became a pure fan for a bit and I loved it!! These sounds are incredible even for a pro like yourself. Wonderful reaction thank you.
Couple of great vocalists to check out are Russell Allen from Symphony X (have to listen to the Odyssey) and Roy Khan's kamelot (abandoned live is a great example)
STEPHANOS [greek] was the name of the first martyr after jesus,... it became STEPHANVS or STEFANVS in latin liturgies, and from this form it was adopted by all the new-latin world: STEPHAN in english, STEFANO in italian, ESTEBAN in spanish, and so on... basicly both of you are right about this!
That was awesome and you're the first I've seen react to this incredible band! Thank you so much for the fantastic reaction video and keep up the great work!
The Haunting live would be an obvious followup from here, though I think the Elizabeth trilogy from the same show would probably be the most impressive from a vocal stand point. Either's great, though.
React to Stabat Mater Dolorosa from the same show, you’re gonna get blown away! Another video recommendation it’s: Female Metal Vocalist: Expectation Vs Reality ❤️
@ifyouwantbochin The Stabat Mater Dolorosa Mariela is talking about is a rendition of Pergolesi's Stabat Mater, as sung live by Floor Jansen and Simone Simmons, live with orchestra.
Very nice reaction Beth! Glad to see you appreciate and really get into other styles... One of these times we will get you letting out that strawberry mane and headbanging to some great stuff... Epica kingdom of heaven live just might do the trick!

I really think you might like Chasing the Dragon by Epica from that same show - Retrospect 😉 FYI Floor and Simone have been friends for a very long time 👍
I know everyone talks about Floor and Mark being in After Forever together, but they also collaborated on another project together, ReVamp! It's worth checking out. Floor really showcases her range, from operatic to guttural vocals
During the same concert, they (Floor and Simone) sing Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater", with the orchestra. When you have time, try to listen also Nightwish's "The Greatest Show On Earth", in the live version.
I Love Epica...seen them 4 times live in small venues, up close and personal. Simone is an Awesome singer. Floor Jansen is lead singer of Nightwish and is also Awesome. Seen them several times too. If you ever get a chance to see either one live, go see them! You won't be disappointed. :)
I hear they're really good friends as opposed to "I like your band we should do something together". They have great chemistry together, I'd love to see more of them together.
Well Mark (on guitar, and the screaming guy at end Beth) and Floor were both in the band After Forever. Their first band. Then Mark quit (to say it nicely) and shortly after started Epica (originally Sahara Dust). So yeah, there is a lot of chemistry and camaraderie between them. Also Floor sings on his other project "MaYan" too.
You should do more Epica. I highly suggest that you check out their song "Consign to Oblivion: Live at the Zenith"! The singer of Epica is Simone Simons. Another fun fact: Mark Jansen, the guitarist of Epica, used to be in a band with Floor called AfterForever.
Yes! Thank you for doing this. Great content as always! Epica got their name from the album 'III Ways to Epica' by Kamelot, so it seems fitting if you would do Kamelot soon :) I would suggest doing 'The Haunting Live at Norway (2006)' as I think you would enjoy the theatrical atmosphere and because it features Simone Simons from Epica (who is also married to Kamelot's keyboard player Oliver Palotai). Alternatively I would really enjoy seeing a reaction to the live rendition of 'Elizabeth (I, II & III)' as it is an extremely expressive performance. Thanks again :)
Honestly: I think it's something about rock academy or other music education, the non-rock music education doesn't seem to mind teaching how to switch between styles. Or they have more classical teachers at the rock academy as well. Something like that would be my best guess !

I love that you geeked out when you noticed the orchestra 😂 I did too. I’ve only recently discovered symphonic metal, and so far it has encapsulated every single element of music I enjoy. I didn’t think classical and metal would gel at all, and I’m blissfully happy to report that I was woefully incorrect.
Epica is my number one, a band I’ve seen live 4 times. I see Epica, I click. Simone (Epica) was pregnant and I think a little ill during this show, so she gets extra points for performing up there for 3 hours as well as she did. She’s only gotten better with time. And of course Floor Jansen is always amazing to watch and listen to.
Love your reactions! Always a joy to see how you get excited about good singers :) For Epica I would also recommend a very quite and accustical song, where you can fully enjoy Simones voice: Epica - Feint Acoustic (Lyrics)
these two have absolutely beautiful synergy together. if nightwish or epica god forbid ever split. the remaining band should just scoop up a second vocalist and duo that shit. i'd love to see a whole epica/nightwish collab album with them all working together. the possibilities of the things those two incredible collectives of creative minds could come up with are next to endless.
There are three major bands that are at the top of the Symphonic Metal Genera, you have now reacted to two of them. The third is called: "Within Temptation". The performance you want is live from their 15 year anniversary concert in Antwerp, 2012. The first song, "Iron" starts at 5-40 and would be an excellent choice. That concert also features an orchestra live on stage with the band.
Its been stated in other reviews that Simone Simons (Epica singer) was 4 months pregnant at the time of this show and still did a full set. Now thats some dedication.
Hansi Kursch from Blind Guardian. Something from their live DVD "Imaginations through the looking glass" filmed in Coburg, Germany, in 2003. Songs like and then there was silence, punishment divine, or as people said below, Mirror Mirror
