Thank you so much - that’s incredibly kind, and encourages me to keep going with this format! I don’t have the time or patience to try and do much more than just talking to the camera 🤪. Glad you’re enjoying!
Like your style young Paul. First time watching on this format. I've seen your reels and enjoyed them. I like your attitude and I like the odd hand grenade 😂. I couldn't agree with you more about spreading positivity and having fun. Good luck with the training block. Valencia is the course for p.b.s . Lovely weather plus a better beer 🍺 after. Keep up the great work. Until next time. Cheers 🍻
Thanks so much - I will 100% be framing the “young paul” statement! My mates at the gym joke that I’m an old man so they’ll love this! Really pleased you’ve found the channel - are you training for anything at the moment?
@pksruns Hey Paul. Your younger than me so you must be young. I'm entered into the Winchester 10k in February. My goal is for under 38!!! Let's wait and see. Cheers young man😁
All the very best 🎉 I ran Brighton last year in 2:45:35 and I've got into London via GFA aswell, I'll maybe see you there, I've made sure to follow you to track your progress 🔥
@ started running in August. This year I’ve signed up for two half marathons, one trail marathon and a 50k ultra trail marathon to finish in Oct. and a 10k with my wife.
Ok I’ll try to keep up. Will check your schedule and compare. I have similar goal of 2:42 which is the USA and NZ record for a 60-65 yo. Berlin was 2:49 so work to do! Good luck.
I watched the previous video about aiming for Sub2.40 at London, but I cannot recommend enough to just try and Enjoy London the first time rather than focusing on a time there (go by effort/HR on the day, let whatever time happen) I describe London as having never felt so lonely surrounded by so many people, and I've never had so many people cheering "around" me - just nobody shouting "for" me. Love the 2.45 Unicorn out of nowhere. Just catching up on the channel. Check out the Physiology of Endurance Podcast with Dan Nash 🙂 Good for the long runs. PS. See you in Valencia
Thanks much - so pleased you enjoyed! You’re definitely describing my inner monologue of “just go and enjoy, take a ton of footage, soak it all in” vs “go and race and make it the PB!”. Ironically I NEVER wanted to run London but got fed up of people asking “have you run London” and then being disappointed that I hadn’t! Just followed on Strava and I can see you’ve ticked off one of my other goals of 100 miles - SUPER impressed! Will check that podcast out - definitely wanting to tackle all bases!!!
Thanks so much mate - you’ve been here since the beginning so should have some sort of members hat! This will be a great running year for both of us 💪🏼
Top video Paul - big fan of this format. I'm currently training for MCR marathon. This will be my 5th (including 2 MCR attempts) and my second sub 3 attempt. The closest I've come is getting to mile 20 at sub-3 pace.... then blowing up. I've pinpointed strength training (or the lack thereof) as a contributing factor and it would be great to see a video on your gym/strength routine if possible. Good Luck at London and keep up the good work!
MCR brings back very fond memories for me as it was my first Sub-3 - I blew up at about mile 18 mentally and then physically at 22 but had built a buffer so squeezed over the line just under 3. I didn't do any strength work then, and joined the gym in summer 2023 to see if it would make a difference and honestly the difference has been huge - I'll do some content on this particular part of my training as I'm pretty sure it's the missing element for a lot of runners
From one Paul to another all the very best for your training! 🎉😊. Training for my 10th Marathon - the Muscat Marathon in Oman! A lot slower than you, attempting 3h 45m!
Subscribed and watched this video first, found it very intuitive and very useful being a marathon runner myself. Keep up the great work with the videos and the training.
@ Valencia 2025, need a longer break from maras after doing 2 last year. Training for a 10k in march and will look to better the shorter distances and by end of year tackle HM, 10 mile race and then end the year with my A race. Great choice of choice NB Rebel 4, I currently rotate them with Hoka Mach 6 as both incredibly light and non-carbon and allow pick up of paces too
I've never tried a Hoka - are they relatively wide? As soon as I put the Rebels on I LOVED how they fitted! Took a little while to get used to a slightly lower drop, but now really love them!
@@pksruns I thought that about the Rebel’s taking a little to get used to but had to go 1/2 up in mine and come up small. But last two progressive 10 mile runs in them been effortless. Hoka Mach can be a tad narrow if wide foot (mine is slightly) so got the E width but true to size. The Machs compliment the Rebels very well as a rotation. To confuse it a little more, I have saucony speed 4 when I need a bit more push on my run a day after intervals / efforts.
@@pksruns also London! I tried to sub-2:40 in 2023 but fell short by 1 second! Since then, my running has taken a lot of set backs. I'll be lucky to break 2:50 this year in all honesty as the motivation has dwindled and the speed in the legs is not quite there anymore. I'm 46.
I’ve just found your channel and have subscribed. I’m interested in your journey as I also am trying to go sub 2:40 at London (current PB 2:44:31 at Berlin in 2022). It’s going to be trickier for me as I’ll be 56 on race day. I think running 80 miles plus a week off 6 days per week and three gym sessions is very challenging. I guess you must be doing quite a few double days?
Thanks so much - I would LOVE to do Berlin so am insanely jealous! You’re still young at 56! With my routine the mileage kind of works out - my 2 miles to the gym first thing is very much recovery run, then 45 mins hard in the gym (heavy weights) but full body, then I try and top that up to 10 miles for the day in the morning. In December I was running 7 days which made it easier so there will have to be double days once the mileage gets higher. Next week I start on 55 miles though which will feel like a holiday after last month 🤣
Great video, Paul! Did London 2024 and it is great course, should you get proper weather, PB conditions are there! I am also registered for Valencia 2025! I am not that fast though (yet 😁), I just went under 3h in December. One piece of advice, or call it reflection, thought, whatever. From all my previous experiences and also research, it ia difficult to go really too easy for the easy. It is on the other side easy to go too quick. Think about that 7min mile target you are thinking. I looked at your current run while you filmed this and you were spot on Z2 with your HR. Perhaps you should rather target HR zone than pace zone for the easy ones. Remember these runs are not meant to make you better, but to keep you fit while recovering for the next hard session and going too fast won’t help. Just a thought. Wish you good luck with preparation and I will follow your progress with interest 🤞
Yeah that’s spot on - tbh I have always run by “feel” which feels very intuitive! I take my camera on every run and although 98% of the footage doesn’t see the light of day it helps to moderate the pace. Interestingly I ran my 2:59 in Manchester off REALLY slow runs and did hardly any speed work - just plenty of volume. What’s your plan for Valencia looking like?
@ listening to you, I believe those easy runs were a decisive part of your progress, don’t underestimate it and keep on doing it. Sometimes we focus too much on improving stuff without too much reflection on what we did well and need to keep on doing. As for myself at Valencia, not sure yet, still long way until that. I worked a lot specifically the last three years to get Boston Marathon tickets 🎫 and I hope this time with 7+min contingency on the new standards, I’ll be there next year in April. I want to run “free” of big plans for this year, keep out of injuries, focus on aerobic volume, do some races here and there up to half marathons maybe focus on speed improving, some trail running which I love and had to stay apart of while training for road marathons… During summer I will see where I am with my fitness and my desire of another strong training block for Valencia, or I will just enjoy the race which I heard is lovely. To be followed :))
It's a good question - I say it's cardio, but it's still mostly weights related so more like a HIIT circuit! Lighter than my strength sessions though (think pushups, broad jumps, plyometrics - all the stuff that I hate) - to be honest it's more about keeping a routine (better for my mental health) and it's all coached, so it's also my social life !!!
You're the most verbally articulate running TH-camr, and a delight to listen to.
Thank you so much - that’s incredibly kind, and encourages me to keep going with this format! I don’t have the time or patience to try and do much more than just talking to the camera 🤪. Glad you’re enjoying!

London. Will follow your progress also 💪🏼
Just subbed. Good luck with the PB this year and I look forward to following along!
Thanks so much - hopefully this will be the year of PB's. Are you training for anything ?

Subscribed! I’m running London 2025 too. Using the Hansons Beginner Marathon Plan, and trying for sub 4! Look forward to picking up some useful tips.
That’s awesome - how are you finding the training so far? Hopefully you’re loving it? 😊
@ great so far, early days though. I’ll let you know it if I feel the same once the mileage ramps up. 😀
haha yes - marathon training is not all rainbows and unicorns - there will definitely be some tough days, but it's those days that maketh the runner!
Ok I’ll try to keep up. Will check your schedule and compare. I have similar goal of 2:42 which is the USA and NZ record for a 60-65 yo. Berlin was 2:49 so work to do! Good luck.
Oh wow - I look forward to hearing how you get on. That will be an incredible performance. Which race are you targeting?

Thank you so much Paul - that sounds like an incredible marathon. When is that, and how hot will it be? 3:45 is still a very respectable time 😊
Thank you! Will be about 20°c, I actually live in Abu Dhabi, UAE (UK expat), so am used to the heat! @@pksruns
Oh wow! That's actually not a bad temperature - I love running in the heat, though I imagine that it's next level in the UAE!

Really looking forward to following you on the road to London. I will be at Manchester hoping for my first sub 3 good luck💪💪💪💪💪
Thanks so much - my first marathon was Manchester back in 2023 - you will love it - such a friendly atmosphere! How’s the training going?
Yep seen your video on Manchester that sort of made it for me training going well just need to stay calm and don't go mad👍👍
Good luck!

If you have done all that base building and you will presumably be doing an 80-20 split in training, do you need 2 cardio sessions at the gym?
