The black paint can help to absorb some of the lights from the very Bring 32000 lumen flashlight. If you use a regular cardboard without the black paint then some of the light can be absorbed through by the cardboard and some light can pass through the cardboard. Granted you can use other materials but other materials that are not very very dark or black will still absorb or even reflect the light back. That's why I suggested painting the bat symbol black first so that it can look as crisp as possible. That's my theory at least. Did that answer your question?

You'd see any light that directly struck your eye. You'd also be able to see the ~5% of light that this stuff reflects, but you'd need a bright light source like the video demonstrated to actually be able to perceive shadows properly so you might bump into things or feel slightly dizzy until you got adjusted to it.
You can still see. I painted a room at my client's office floor to ceiling, door and everything with PPG's blackest paint "almost as dark as vantablack" and I could still coordinate it with just a small work light

Comparing vantablack to this purely numerically is wrong. Because getting the difference between this and vantablack is like getting from the speed of sound to the speed of light. It’s a pretty big jump.

In sunlight, more of the light is infrared, which means that there's more energy to be absorbed, despite the lower lumen count. It would result in sunburning within 15 minutes and reach about 43°C on a spring day 30° N of the equator.

Ok but to be fair even Vantablack would have been illuminated visibly by these 32.000 lumens. Vantablack absorbs 99,65% of all light (I hope I remember that correctly). But that means it still reflects 0,35%. 1% of 32000 lumens is 320 lumens and 320x0,35 = 112. So this area of paint - even if it was Vantablack - would reflect 112 lumens which is still a lot.
You could actually blind someone with this thing, do not know if permanently but still, you could get in far more trouble than just using good ol' pepper spray.
I know but the thing is, the "black" in the video is the same shade as anything else black. It's not HDR, it's 8-bit which bottoms out at the same value as everything else that's black. I'm not arguing that IPS and AMOLED make black look good, but they would make anything (0,0,0) black look as good as this. The "blackest paint the world" in a TH-cam video doesn't look any blacker than anything else, they're all equally black through the 8-bit color displaying.

Ok but to be fair even Vantablack would have been illuminated visibly by these 32.000 lumens.
Vantablack absorbs 99,65% of all light (I hope I remember that correctly). But that means it still reflects 0,35%. 1% of 32000 lumens is 320 lumens and 320x0,35 = 112. So this area of paint - even if it was Vantablack - would reflect 112 lumens which is still a lot.
Your calculation is correct but data is wrong. Vantablack absorbs 99.965% light so it would reflect 11.2 lumens

I know but the thing is, the "black" in the video is the same shade as anything else black. It's not HDR, it's 8-bit which bottoms out at the same value as everything else that's black. I'm not arguing that IPS and AMOLED make black look good, but they would make anything (0,0,0) black look as good as this. The "blackest paint the world" in a TH-cam video doesn't look any blacker than anything else, they're all equally black through the 8-bit color displaying.
