Clear-eyed and persuasive arguments, Mrs. Applebaum. Thank you for your support of Ukraine!
if only the west supported ukraine instead of weapons manufacturers 😂
@@robertduluth8994 As Zeleneskyy himself said, ‘give us weapons’. Talk of support & solidarity is cheap to a man in the middle of a war.
@@robertduluth8994 You could not get more tone deaf if you tried.
Anders Puck Nielsen just posted an excellent video about what a russian victory looks like in Ukraine. He argues that it is not merely about territory but about influence and controlling Ukraine. Western leaders, he argues, just do not understand this. The "peace plans" they float in essence hand victory to russia. Both he and Ms. Applebaum are correct. This interview, along with Anders latest video, need to be shown in every European parliament.
I saw Prof. Pucks video this afternoon and as usual his insights provide a clarity that's severely lacking in most Western media.
Yes , I hope people are listening to people like him
What exactly is stopping von Clownstick from unfreezing the funds, giving them back to Moscovia and integrating them back to Swift payment systems? If that happens, everyone AGAIN will be "surprised"
I saw that video, but I think I have to disagree with his conclusions. Yes, Russia would be happy with a Ukraine dominated by Russia, but Putin has been fairly clear that he wants Ukraine to cease to exist.
Absolutly agree with Mrs. Applebaum.
So why AlJulani hasn't taken the Russian bases in Syria? Why Is rail taking land in Syria? Why Julani had Millikn dollar fbi reward on his head?

@@Perno007 YOU don't know why, so that "nobody" is totally misplaced. the fact you're dumb, or misinformed, it's your problem
Anne Applebaum's eloquence and insight are a joy to hear, she's always right on target.
Yes. Seems to me there should be more explicit emphasis that US/EU support for Ukraine is a national security issue, not a “foreign aid” issue.
100%
Hybridarmy is right... we've been framing it the Russian way because RU brainwashed us too... the truth is everything we put in-place since WWII is in jeopardy due to the fact that RU wove itself into our fabrics... Anne's husband made the strongest case yet at latest OSCE calling for Russian expulsion... the world needs to stop squirming and suspend all seats held by RU (OSCE, UNGA, UNSC, UNFCCC, IOC, etc.) or conflicts will continue for decades. The world cannot be held hostage by RU. From Ontario, Canada, Slava Ukraïni, Slava Free World.
Russia is evil and wants to conquer Paris, and Ukraine is a good guy; this can now be seen in the Western media.
If people like Ambassador Jack Matlock had listened in 1994, we would have lived in a more reasonable world, trying to circumvent the politics of the blocs.
The architect of the Soviet deterrence, George Kennan, did the same in 1997. In the article, the NYT bluntly stated that further expansion to the east would seriously provoke Russia and would be a serious mistake.
At last, someone is questioning the media hype about negotiations. She is absolutely right, the Russians do not want to stop this.
Russia would like to pause it so that they can rebuild their military and come back again later
But they will never agree to anything that comes with Ukraine joining NATO
Because that would prevent them from coming back and attacking again when they think that they are strong enough to win
@@HuskyOwner-bl1jfthey muat know however that the west can industrialize must faster without Ukraine joining nato so that by the time the war restarts the Russian will be again outmatched

You have to remember we didn't support them until they pushed back the initial invasion on their own. Because we believed that Russia would just roll them in no time flat
@@HuskyOwner-bl1jf Not quite. It’s called sovereignty & the will to fight. If Ukrainians weren’t willing to fight for their govt, country & future, then why should other countries get involved? @@HuskyOwner-bl1jf its not an assumption. we have seen them already support Ukraine after seeing its potential to generate profits for weapons companies. i hope you have stock in raytheon. the second time around, why wouldn’t the west want to collect profit whilst weakening russia further still?

A very similar conclusion was reached in Anders Puck Nielsen's most recent. Another eye-opening commentator who's looking ahead and thinking -- as she does here.
IKR? It’s not even 3D chess - only need to think 2 steps beyond tomorrow.
Anne is on top of her game. One tactic Putin may employ to placate Trump and avoid retributive action is to enter talks, but to do so under a time consuming cloud of procedural disputes and without any ultimate intention of conceding anything. Putin may have committed the greatest geopolitical blunder of the century, but he can still run rings around Trump in the diplomatic sphere.
She is so right. Here we are, all talking about a deal, yet Russia is not interested in making a deal.
Totally agree with Anne ! Trump will think about his own image first in all of this - there is no altruism or empathy in him. Already Trump has said long range strikes into Russia is a bad idea. Putin's foreign ministry press secretary says: " Only the implementation of Putin's proposals, taking into account the realities on the ground, can put an end to the conflict." This doesn't sound any different than "complete capitulation" to me. The best outcome for all of us in the free world is that Ukraine WINS. 💙💛
Very commanding commentary from Ms. Applebaum, much appreciated
I love Anne Applebaum. A reasoned voice of sanity!!! Support Ukraine!!!
Great guest as always, she knows her stuff !!!
@ How do you predict what the enemy is going to hit lol if people could do that they would be able to shoot down everything, she was talking about that type of thing anyway, please give us the location of the attack, before you go back to school 🤡
Good (although depressing) to hear clear-eyed and clear-headed observations on the so-called Trump peace plan.
The key difference is accept vs. crushed completely with Putin and his inner circle out of power completely. This still leaves Russia as a people in extremum. The deal is: Original boundaries of Ukraine and NATO guarantee of those boundaries or crushed. Therefore, is it possible to crush Russia militarily. Yes, and it is easy. What is needed is the will to do that. His threats are empty.
Excellent points by Anne Applebaum. There’s a reason why NATO SecGen recently said that NATO countries need to move to a wartime footing.
Anne I agree. For Trump it's all about his ego. How he will look.
Short attention span, entirely based on his self esteem and image.
Brilliant thank you Anne Applebaum ..............
Thanks, Times Radio.

Anne Applebaum absolutely right!
Anne Applebaum is just superb.
Having no plan as a plan is Trumps MO. Have general concepts in mind and from there improvise.
‘Future faking’ is one of the hallmarks of someone with Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Trump does it all the time - makes promises to get support, and then does nothing.
Pretty rich coming from nepo baby 🇷🇺🐖Don Jr who has not held a real job for over decade. Living high off the trough of politics has proven very lucrative for these grifting traitors.
It is beyond comprehension that journalists STILL speak as though Trump understands ANY foreign policy - let alone the issues in Ukraine. Why would anyone hope, think, expect that Trump has any plan at all - if the conflict in Ukraine ceases under his so-called 'administratuion', it will be entirely by accident, and NOT becuase of anything that Trump has either thought of or done. Fact. Good to hear Anne Applebaum speaking realistically, not euphemistically like the journos.
Why Americans have chosen Trump as their President again is an absolute mystery to me. 😮
Essentially, because a group of old white people see the country changing in ways they don't like, and have convinced themselves that an ignorant convicted felon will return them to an imagined past.
As a Canadian I think I can answer that... only intellectuals (a minority) can see and comprehend a world beyond the state they live in. It was no different prior to Pearl Harbor.
Stupidity: a large segment of our electorate doesn't understand what happened under Trump 1.0, what happened under Biden, and/or what's going to happen under Trump 2.0: they think he's going to reprise something that never happened, and that it will be better than what's jappening now.

Realist Brit here. An excellent commentary, although repeating what most sensible commentators (Like Lt Gen Hodges, Jake Broe et al) and 'people on the street' have been saying for the last 3 years, especially women in power, like Ms Kallas. And now; more waiting (12.55) 'Let's wait and see whose advice he decides to take." That, I think, is the critical mistake of Europe; waiting to see what an unknown quantity is going to do on the advice of another unknown quantity. Now that Putin is down (but definitely NOT OUT, by a long chalk) there is a window of opportunity; I believe European political and military leaders should look at a serious scenario of 'going it alone'. Total air superiority would be the first priority. Doesn't a coalition European countries have enough F16s, Mirages and Gripen? Can't they fly out of, say Romania and Poland as well as Ukraine. Once this air superiority is achieved, military installations and supply lines eliminated it's game over. Call Putin's nuclear bluff. We saw how quickly it ended in Syria with a concerted effort. And we saw that with Napoleon because he was not dealt with properly! ...he kept coming back time and again.
Trump & team, have no idea how to deal with issues like this......

I don't understand why it is debated how the seized money should be handled. It seems like a no brainer to me ru should never get it back anyway as the damage they have caused is more than the 300 billion so that money should have been put to good use 2 years ago already. The only precedent that arises from this is that it's not a good idea to invade other countries if you want to keep your money.
Where did the money originate? Was it from the Russian state or private individuals who happen to be Russian? In the latter case it might be considered unjust to keep the money unless it could be shown that the people whom it originally belonged to support or at least sypathise with Putin's regime and its war against Ukraine.
@@bobohare4825 We are talking about seized government assets, the 300 billion isn't some private bank accounts of oligarchs although those could also be confiscated as pretty much anyone that has been able to become rich in ru has been aligned with Putin.
@@cyberfunk3793 An oligarch's allegedly being aligned with Putin seems a fairly weak justification for confiscaging his assets. But if the monies are government assets then the matter does seem pretty staightforward.
@@bobohare4825 Well that is what I believe the 300 billion is: foreign reserves etc. directly linked to the ru government/state. Just confiscate all ru related assets first (personal ones also) and the 0.1% that might not be involved propping up Putin can go through a court process to request their money back. Ru isn't respecting any common sense either when it fines Google for example so time for the gloves to come off on our side as well if we actually want to win this war.

Will ANY analysis ever mention the Budapest Memorandum?
The Russian economy is roughly the size of Italy's, it simply cannot sustain a sphere of influence like the US and China - and we're witnessing that in real-time.
she sure is smart.
In a strategic sense, the fall of Assad has caused both Iran and Russia immeasurable loss. For a start, while Hezbolla has been totally decapitated, Iran's air-defence is now non-existent, as is its land-bridge to the Mediterranean. Likewise, Russia is now without a warm-water port for it's navy, having had to depart in haste and without sufficient fuelling or supplies to get it back to the Baltic Sea. And as it won't be able to move into the Black Sea it is now stuck, with a long journey ahead without support.
Meanwhile, its forces in Africa are now having to make their way across borders to seek asylum in neutral countries, as those dictators Russia supported have now lost confidence in Putin's ability to support them.
In short, Assad's fall is nothing short of a disaster for both Russia and Iran.
100%
Fully agree. If the West think it’s costly now to support Ukraine, should Ukraine lose this war, the cost will not only be astronomical financially, but human suffering will greatly increase and overall security will again be at risk.

"The Russians need to understand they have lost the war."
This is the one main point I would disagree with Anne Applebaum, and others, on: the Russians do NOT think they have lost the war, especially since they are still gaining ground in Ukraine. And forget about pointing out how many men they are losing every day in Ukraine. The last war where body counts were used as an indicator of who was "winning" (Vietnam) showed just how bogus that metric is. Far more important is the will to fight -- and so far, in spite of every negative indicator that has been latched on to by Western media and commentators -- Russia shows no sign of lacking the will to fight on. THEY believe they are winning -- and that is incentive enough for them to continue, especially if they believe they are defeating not just Ukraine, but NATO, and the "decadent" West.
