Notice how the blue umbrellas never caught fire somehow right next to the building. Or the 2 blue cars that are almost completely intact in the center of traffic, the paint still intact. why every car around it is a dusty white. The buildings are completely destroyed, only ashes are left.

I have lived in Lahaina since the 1990s. I’m still on west Maui this to this day. This is the first drone footage I’ve seen that actually shows the up close details of the streets I’ve walked along for decades. Yes, I cried. Everything I knew is gone, including a few close friends. We are still struggling this Christmas. Lady Lahaina was so caring and loving. She is not gone as her spirit is still felt. I am only 3 miles away from this but watching this seems like I’m miles away. My heart aches so badly. You can’t help but think that there is something way bigger at play here.
I will one day be blessed to walk these street again one she is reborn. Im anxiously awaiting for her to awaken. I love her so.

Fire makes no distinctions and when it attacks, especially in such a catastrophe, it sets fire to everything in its path and we all agree on this.

Many condolences.. Before rebuilding, Maui homeowners could learn from the 1993 Laguna Beach fire where only one home in Mystic Hill was the only left untouched by it--was spared due to its construction and landscape design. The house featured double-pained glass which helps keep heat from igniting the draperies inside the house, a tile roof sealed with concrete on the ends to keep sparks out, and stuccoed eves to hide any exposed wood. Landscaping zones of fire resistant plants also helped. Read as much as you can about fire retardant materials to prevent a recurrence. Do not sell your land. If you work as a community and get a trusted single developer who can help rebuilt at a great discount, I believe it will work. Erect a memorial as a reminder of this incident if you can.

Such a devastating loss of life! It looks like any structure that had a large-enough parking lot around it stood a better chance of being spared by the fire although they still got singed. It's almost like having a moat of asphalt serving as a firebreak. Hopefully people sought refuge in such locations.

Did the Parrot’s make it out? They were in a cage at a restaurant. I feel so worried about them, they were so sweet! How many of the trees will recover, or will they? 😢 I hope there are artists that can help duplicate the historic buildings so children know the history. 😢 My prayers are with the burn victims and other’s who lost their homes. May they find strength to recover. 😢

My wife and I are from Ohio. We have been to Maui a few times. Lahaina is my wife's favorite place in the world to be. We would always take at least one day where I would go snorkeling somewhere and my wife would go to Lahaina to shop and hang out at some of the coffee shops. We would always eat at Cool Cat restaurant right beside the Banyan tree. I feel so bad for these people. There was a lot of homeless people in that area. How are those people identified? I pray for Maui and there people.
