    Not divisive at all. 99% of people think it's great.

      I will gladly say it is getting great reviews online. But my thought process spanned from the reaction I saw in the theater and the discussions I saw after the movie ended. It seemed like people left either amazed or disappointed. As it is I saw the movie with 8 people, 3 of which didn't like it. So I felt that despite the great online reviews, that this movie had the potential to really make people think! Appreciate the comment my friend🫡

    i thought the black and white scene looked great. also, i’m pretty sure it wasn’t cgi. there was a behind the scenes thing or something like that i saw and they used a thermal camera for it

      Wow I had no idea! I appreciate the heads up. While that does make me appreciate the details of the scene, I still think I'll hold my opinion on the scene in general. So would you keep the scene black and white, or would you have redone the scene in color? Appreciate the comment my friend 🙂

      @@TheThirdFloorofficial Also note that the black and white visuals are due to the black sun around Giedi Prime. Notice how when they were indoors the 'man made' lighting makes their natural colours come through. I think it's a nice touch. I think the idea is to make Geidi Prime feel more alien in a harsh and unforgiving way. Also as I was watching the movie the crowd in the stadium scene kind of reminds me of N. Korea and the choreographed cheering when Kim arrives.

      @@TheThirdFloorofficial I havent read the novels either. I just love how the Harkonnens are portrayed. Black teeth, no hair, harsh and unforgiving planet the distinct design of their technology IE their artillery cruisers and their harvesters as well as their planet's architecture. It just screams of malice and uncanniness. And dont get me started on the Harkonnen fireworks looking like blots of ink in the sky. They have such a fleshed out and distinct identity and I feel it adds so much into the immersion into the Dune universe.

      Heck yeah, dude. I'm glad you liked it! When it came to the Harkanins' physical appearance, I agree they look great. I really enjoyed the scene in the first movie where Halleck is describing the Harkanins to Paul. And he's clearly afraid of them and says "theyre not human, they're brutal." It really builds them up and makes them even better antagonists.

    The Nuclear Weapons that weren't used is because all of the Landsraad have essentially just one rule and that is to NOT use them AT ALL, like or else if they do its deemed by the Emperor as a grounds to annihilate their planet (death star style). The only exception, and another reason why the houses keep them is in case they ever are to encounter alien life, which their is a significant lack of aliens in Dune so it kind of makes for an interesting plot point or lore feature dissimilar to that you would typically find in sci-fi, like no computers at all or any aliens. Sure they can assassinate people and you know, go to war with eachother but nukes is their one common thing they all can not do, im sure theyd like to but yk (sorry just lore drop x) )

    • @TheThirdFloorofficial
      @TheThirdFloorofficial  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Wow that's super interesting! That is a crazy plot point. That they all have these massive weapons, but the hold onto them just in case of aliens. I think the part that holds the most weight, though, is how you said the nukes are a no go for everyone. Yet Paul atreides just let them loose. It kind of builds into the fact (in my eyes) that he seems a bit unstable at the end of Dune Part 2. You definitely just added a new level of appreciation for the dune universe in my eyes!! Appreciate the comment and lore info my friend 🫡

      @GabrielSilva-mv4fm 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      hey, the nukes were major for the plot.
      Paul could only take arrakis once the treat to nuke the spice production spots were in the table. "you can only control what you could destroy"

    • @astra8325
      @astra8325 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheThirdFloorofficial Definitely that's right, Paul's character is interesting and changes because Dune is mainly about exploring political/theological/philosophical etc etc themes, and pairing those themes with the amazing cast and teams working on sound, visuals, shots and writing is just beautiful, which is why in my opinion the way the two films have been made have just been so amazing. I imagine it's only setup for 3 films, but if they explore the other 3 books at all it'll definitely become a lot more obvious (and a lot weirder too). At the end Paul's character is meant to be questionable for everyone, is he going insane or is there some future he has seen with his foresight he is trying to achieve, or is he just a bad perspn. I know the books aren't for everyone, but I do recommend it if you want to explore the world more

    @XTAKU. 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    The main disappointment stems from long time fans of Dune who were disappointed certain scenes and subplots were cut from the film due to time constraints, would say about 95% of people liked it. There are a few people who disliked the film as it has a "radical" depiction of religion which some people felt uncomfortable with, which is the point of the book and film (bringing to light what is often overlooked in society among other things). I also saw a few people who didn't like the film due to the casting choices but they are few in number and just nitpicking.

    • @TheThirdFloorofficial
      @TheThirdFloorofficial  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I really wanted to dive into the religious tones of this movie as another reason why I personally find it divisive. But that seemed far too politically charged and deviated from my goal of this video, which was just to share a few thoughts I had while talking to people after seeing the movie. Do you think there was anything that they could have added from the books to have made the movie even better for the casual audience?

    • @XTAKU.
      @XTAKU. 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheThirdFloorofficial nope, Denis Villeneuve already went through great lengths to streamline the narrative for casual viewers in both films. If he wanted to do a rigidly ultra faithful adaptation he could have done that but it would have likely not done as well at the box office. The Dune Saga is about big ideas and is generally very philosophical with little to no emphasis on action. The books get more and more strange and cerebral as you continue to read the saga which obviously meant there would be some changes made in a movie adaptation. For example, in Dune Paul’s sister Alia is “Preborn” due to her mother (The Lady Jessica) undergoing the spice trance by consuming the water of life which is a deadly poison created by drowning a sand trout in water (water is toxic to sand worms and sand trout). The spice trance is a sort of test used by the Bene Gesserit to unlock genetic memory (A science fiction concept wherein the memories of all of your genetic ancestors is somehow encoded into your dna). When Jessica successfully converted the deadly poison using Prana Bindu physiology control (A power the Bene Gesserit gained through selective breeding through their eugenics program spanning many thousands of years) she unlocked her genetic memory but also awakened Alia’s genetic memory as well. This was catastrophic for Alia because she never had the chance to develop a sufficient human ego before unlocking genetic memory meaning she had little means of individuality from all of the “past lives” that resided in her mind. Alia is about three years old by the end of the original Dune novel and is essentially a fully grown adult in a child’s body. She is the one who killed Baron Vladimir Harkonnen in the book and in David Lynch’s 1980s adaptation of Dune. She is cut from Dune part 2 mostly but appears in a vision by Paul using his prescient sight (sight of the future) and is played by Anya-Taylor Joy as a fully grown adult. I could go on but my point is, the movie already goes to great lengths to sort of simplify the narrative to be more palatable to the casual viewer, I don’t think Denis could have added anything else to the two films to meet this goal. The only thing I could think of that I thought was a bummer aside from the unfortunate cut of scenes and subplots was that Feyd-Rutha Harkonnen and the Emperor do not appear as much as I and many others felt they should have in the film. We don’t really see Feyd until the latter half of the 2nd film which is weird because Feyd is present throughout the entire first novel on Giedi Prime and Arrakis. I would have expected to at least have Austin Butler’s Feyd-Rautha present throughout the entirety of the 2nd film but it didn’t really happen like that. The Emperor receives even less screen time than Feyd and it really makes it harder to build up tension around the final encounter with the narrative’s natural antagonists because we get so little time with the characters. Aside from that though I think the film had a pretty perfect balance of catering to the casual viewer and keeping with the spirit of the original Dune narrative.

    I'm actually bothered by the fact that the movie is so celebrated. Not the commercial success, but the fact that the story is so celebrated by critics. Because it just doesn't keep up with the books or older SF movies, and the reactions show, from my point of view, how low our expectations have fallen. Dune 2 serves the people who would like to have a proper Star Wars movie but don't get it from Disney.
    The film is so clear and blunt in character drawing, the strong self-empowered Chani, the cartoonish Harkonnen, Paul, who suddenly makes a 180 degree turn after the water of life and is so clearly portrayed as a villain in the end, he could as well have had a swastika tattooed on his forehead.
    There's been a lot of talk about Starship Troopers lately because of Helldivers 2. And the evolution of Rico from Starship Troopers is what I would have liked Paul to have done in Dune 2. The direction of development of the character is similar, but in Starship Troopers it's much more subtle, and you're kind of shocked when you realize: Wait a minute, did I just cross my fingers for a fascist? Dune 2 should have created something like that, because that's also kind of the feeling you get when you read Volume 1 or at the latest at volume 2.
    But yes, the movie looks great. My issues are with the story. It's not the mind food the books are.
    And I think you are right if with fandom you mean the fandom of the dune books. Maybe I would like the movie more if I didn't know that the story in the books is a better one. I liked Dune 1, it was very close to the books and I hoped Dune 2 would go on like that.
    Here a quote from a positive review to the movie: "In Dune: Part Two, Villeneuve is less subtle with his choices, being aggressively vocal about the film’s intent, leaving very little room for ambiguity". And yes, that's my issue

    I think your review is quite superficial, the movie is excellent cinematically, visually stunning and has an amazing soundtrack. It’s the first movie franchise since tenet that I have thoroughly enjoyed, however, I say superficial because you did not touch on the true issues. The difference between the movie and the book, Chanis relationship with Paul and the entire gutting of over-half the time that Paul spent with the fremen, resulting in the relationship net being believable at all.
    That is what is most decisive, how the true fans who read the books with react to the creative liberties taken by the directors.

      @@TheThirdFloorofficial star wars is not sci-fi, star wars is fantasy. Like Harry Potter. Which Dune can’t be compared to. If dune can be compared to any fantasy, it would be game of thrones, purely for the political structure between noble houses and vying for the throne. Harkonnens are like the Lannisters and the Atreides are like the starks. As far as chosen ones, dune does not have a chosen one, where star wars does because fantasy is religious. Dune is an atheist’s critique of messiahs, and our world’s current religions - and is meant to demonstrate the opposite as an attack on messiahs. Which is why Paul goes bad. And that his messiahship is pure orchestrated propaganda that has been sown for centuries so that people would be hoodwinked when the breeding program comes to fruition. The author’s intent was to debunk messiahs, not to have one. So they are polar opposite in that way. And star wars “powers” are magical. Aka religious. Dune doesn’t have “powers”. They are explained through natural selection, breeding, and evolution, etc. No magic or powers in sci-fi.
