*Really, it's all about which one YOU think sounds the best, as you'll be the one hearing it. What's your pick? #1, #2, or #3? Don't forget to check out the new channel **bit.ly/BasicFilmmakerUnscripted*
Thank's for the upload! More factors to consider: The size- how easy is it to hide? The durability- is it going to fail when I need it to work? (They all break eventually) How much noise does it make with clothing and touching the cord etc. The tone doesn't mean much it your mic breaks, or the clothing noise is wrecking the track. I have been using Rode Lav and Smartlav+ more often than not (if I have to use a lav) It has been a good compromise so far.
This is a larger than usual lapel mic. I wouldn't buy it if hiding it is a consideration. It's a metal casing and looks more durable than all the others. As with all mics, noise with clothing and touching the cord is a problem, some more than others, and you would have to take measures to mount it on the talent properly, as you would any lapel. I would buy this if you don't mind it being shown on the screen, as it's not small.
Hello, unfortunately my English is not that good and that is probably why I am a bit confused: Your first link in the video description contains the term "EM172". A ClippyEM172 is also offered in the shop, but your link refers to the ClippyEM272. Which one is the right one?
The lack of noise makes the Micbooster instantly recogniseable Kevin. Not only that, but it has more ‘oomph’ in its sound. A bit more sparkly. Thanks for the shoutout. I’m really chuffed and surprised that a guy like you even sees my videos.
Thanks Ian. And, well, I do go check out what my subscribers are working on or doing, as they are the people I'm most interested in helping out, or in some cases, getting helped. Hopefully some audio lapel mic people will smack me in the face with something that I can finally settle on and use. I also hope Mr. MicBooster gets his products more widely avalable. :)
I’ve kind of resigned myself to the fact that most lavs sound like ‘lavs’ with depth mostly curtailed and high levels of self noise. (As you demonstrated beautifully on the video) The EM172 gives just a bit more adjustment with levels, which means that you can also get it away a little bit without raising the noise floor too much, and very often a more natural sound as well. Plus the EM172 has a pretty robust sound anyway. Actually, you sound good on it too.
Thank you Kevin, loved the video, loved the MixPre3 and how you showed it on camera, nice organic real feel for the demo and have you kept the name till the very end. Unfortunately they are out of stock on the Clippy Micbooster but will get one once they are back in stock, really liked the sound.
I really liked #1. There's more sparkle to the sound of your voice and it's clear. The Rode is good too, but if you can get those results (#1) with something that costs less than a Rode, do it!
Nice to hear these 3 side by side. My cheap option was always the Giant Squid for about $50, but I did suffer with some RF on the Rode Newshooter. My more expensive option is the Countryman B3, it's tiny.
I've been looking at getting the Countryman, but I wanted to at least get SOMETHING I could use and satisfied with so I have something to compare, which means I'll probably get the Countryman soon.
Great video. Can we all just agree that lavaliers suck? And most of the time, the biggest difference is in mic technique and pickup patterns, not frequency response of dynamic range. This video demonstrates that perfectly. I've used plenty of expensive lapels, but I've only bought cheap ones.
Kevin, great demo and information. I was wondering if you have ever evaluated the PowerDeWise lavalier mics? I have four of these mics and have been extremely impressed by their sensitivity and quality. I use them on my Lumix G85, my iPhone, and have just tested them with the Rode WirelessGo system. These mics on Amazon are about $21. I would be curious as to a professional's opinion and thoughts. Thank you for you insights. Always appreciate them.
Nice review. Agreed with the conclusion on which sounds best (through TH-cam and my iPhone speaker albeit). Unfortunately no Way to know (because of poor product documentation ) if my camera ( Hero2)has the needed onboard power feed through the mic cable or not, but for $40 I’ll risk it and just order and try.
Thanks Edin. A lot has changed since Rode made this lapel mic (I am also a Rode fan), but what surprises me is that they a.) haven't come out with something better (that I know of) and b.) haven't reduced the price. I'm also not running heir company so I don't know if this business model works for them. Gessh, that almost sounded laywer-ish. Eeek!
Kevin - The Basic Filmmaker Found this for canon eos 7d - seems it should work: support.usa.canon.com/kb/index?page=content&id=ART167760&cat=DSLR&actp=LIST
Kevin - The Basic Filmmaker - hi Kevin - it seems the Canon Eos 7D might have some hissing noise even with the gain turned down. Wondering if you could recommend a lav mic with external power which I’d think would eliminate that hum.
Frankly, I would quit trying to record sound into the camera. Check out something like the Deity HD-TX and record the audio separately so you get a good clean sound.
After listening for a while on my monitor speakers, I'd say the Rode is more similar to the shotgun IMO. I'm listening on basic JBL monitor speakers with no EQ (flat as possible). Can't wait for the Etymotic ER4SR to arrive though... Quite disagree with your opinion on sound, I think it's Rode > Deity > the cheap one. I am comparing this to your original shotgun mic sound. The cheap one sounds a little harsher than the Deity, Rode, and the shotgun. The Deity lacks the "pleasantness" of the Rode but has that low-end that the cheap one is missing. The Rode has it all for a lav mic (at least I think so). I will be getting the Rode SmartLav+ (which is the same sound as the Rode Lavalier other than the Micron connection according to Rode) to plug into a Zoom F2 :) (32-bit float is super convenient). I haven't been disappointed in Rode one bit. I own a Rode VideoMic Pro+ (sounds AMAZINGGG, but have yet to use in my video) and a Rode NT1 (best mic I've owned, beating out AT2020 which is also very good). Considering a lavalier/lapel for the sake of convenience while still getting good sound quality. In general, I came to my conclusion because I think the cheap one lacks the low-end of the shotgun, Deity, and Rode . The Deity lacks in the mids-to high compared to the Rode and the shotgun. The Rode has everything. This is personal opinion. I'd say if you're not an audio freak though, that cheap mic is literally the BEST under $90.
I’m getting married soon. I plan on singing as I walk down the aisle. Is there a lapel mic that my voice to be amplified in the room and not just for filming?. I don’t want to have to wear a mic for the video and carry a mic with my bouquet
You’ll need a mic that transmits, that has a receiver that can be plugged into the sound source. At the lo end, check out the Røde Go. Even have it in white.
Thanks for the video Kevin, super helpful. I read through the comments and you mentioned a while back you may get a countryman, and also you mentioned a Deity lapel mic that last year hadn't been released yet. From this review I'll probably buy the EM272, but I wonder if you got that countryman and what Deity mic that was and how they compare? Cheers :)
@@BasicFilmmaker Wonderful, thanks Kevin, I had been looking at the Deity Pro lav. Do you think it's significantly better than the EM272, or hard to tell from memory? More importantly, do you feel satisfied with the sound quality you get compared to one of your shotguns!?
The one the reviewer likes the best sounds "crisper" because it has (quite noticeably) much higher harmonic distortion. It's not a clean mic by comparison to the others. He's being fooled by a "crisp" sound that will be more fatiguing to listen to and just generally sounds worse, especially if you start adding processing/effects.
I can't believe Rode asks $250 for that crap, it sounds sooo meh, really kinda muffled. Honestly, cheapest mic sounded best to my ear, with second being Deity. Good comparison, thank you!
I’ve got 3 Rode mics. All together they cost less than $250. I like the build quality, especially on the lav microphone - much better than my really cheap audio-technica lav mics. One off tests like this are “interesting” at best, but not really valid. If you buy any of these mics and it’s not satisfactory, send it back. B&H has a very good return policy.
Basic Filmmaker I don’t like using lavs, but sometimes it is the practical solution. Even in my office, I sometimes choose the lavalier as a “quick and dirty” choice when I’m just lazy.
Art Johnson Dunno, seems like comparisons like this are really really valid, because if your microphone sounds mediocre at best while costing 250 damn dollars no build quality can save your audio quality, which is kinda the point of a mic. It’s like modern Mac laptops: if you computer has great build quality but freaking keyboard breaks because of a dust particle, screen breaks because you open/close your laptop, and it thermo throttles under load, well, lets put it bluntly, it’s a shitty computer than cannot do basic computer stuff. But it has a really solid build, true.

Yep. I’ve got plenty of “Pro” tips. Plug the thing in. Speak words out of your mouth. Make sure you got clothes on. 😂😂😂
The MicBooster Clippy is actually a really common mic in field recording, and is often used in pairs for stereo recording.

Glad it was helpful! Yes, they are a small shop and the mic is popular.
How long did it take for your EM272's to arrive from England? I can't wait to use them !
It was about 2 weeks. Still like these alot.
2 years later do you would still recommend the micbooster mic from the UK?
Who had experiences with it, since then?
