    I learned a lot from this video. The most important thing was take the wheels to the dealer after removing them. THAT is where the bulk of the backbreaking labor is at. As far as learning anything from doing all of the work myself? I've been there so many times that I've learned that sometimes the cost is worth the hassle.

    • @EpicCowlick
      @EpicCowlick  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely a challenge the first time around. But like most things, it gets easier each time. My buddy brought his over and we did his bike in less than 3 hours. I know, not a record pace but a good time nonetheless.

    Nice work and your son was a great help. Really enjoyed the grand finale where you and your posse were cruising down the highway. Enjoyed a full-watch. I'm going to replace my front wheel for a larger wheel, which will be my first time so wish me luck in the attempt. I think I've watched at least 20 or more TH-cam videos on front wheel replacement. Thanks for the video; safe riding! I gave a big ole thumbs-up. 👍🏽🤠 6/23/23

    Great timing- I have two new tires and a harbor freight wheel balancer along with assorted tire irons, I'll be doing the same thing soon. Good tip about the hose and putting it over the iron. I plan to use some cut up detergent bottles for rim protectors, that or maybe chop up an old water hose.

    • @EpicCowlick
      @EpicCowlick  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Turns out the rim protectors really aren't necessary with the vinyl hose trick. Next time around I'll just put the hose on every tire iron. Keeping everything slippery is a BIG help.

  • @duroxkilo
    @duroxkilo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    that's a NICE looking bike! it's also great to see people respect bolt/nut torquing values :} great rim protection!
    @5:20 for whoever is watching this lovely video, this time-frame shows why the tire required so much force to go on. right where the right foot is, the tire's edge (tire bead) should be seated in the center of the rim. the center of the rim has a smaller circumference than the shoulder of the rim thus allowing the tire to take an oval shape making it easier to slide over the edge of the rim. in a sense you're trying to make the circumference of the rim smaller, it that makes sense... @4:40 the first bead of the tire goes on quite nicely, observe how the bead is positioned in the center of the rim, it's not on the shoulder. same situation on the rear tire @11:26... so either press down with your knees on the tire wall to keep it where it needs to be, use zip-ties or even the C-clam may work..
    1. stick an iron tire in the last segment to be worked on prior to getting to that point. that way it's not difficult to slide the tool in..
    2. a quick check on the wheel bearings before taking the wheels off.. there should be no play, clicking sounds, grinding sounds, etc
    3. also SUPER important, watch your fingers when popping the beads.
    be safe, have fun

    • @EpicCowlick
      @EpicCowlick  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Excellent comment and forensic analysis! Using the center of the rim is the trick. This was my first try by hand. It was fun to document the effort.

  • @MrJohnnebgood

    Very nicely done! And love that your son wanted to help out! I'm no professional by far but I did notice a few things you could have mention. Maybe you did and I didn't notice. Like the rotation of the tire mark,PSI in tire and maybe recommending changing bearings on your wheels? Again I'm no pro at this. I just finished changing wheels,brake pads ( front and back ) and had help with the bearing change on my 05 Road King. Yes I make mistakes, I'm still in the process of learning that's why I look for good videos like yours to continue learning. When I was a teenager my older brother and I use to change our car tires like that from old bald to a little better used tires because we couldn't afford new ones.
    Lastly you got on your bike lift and rolled it right off! I just got my lift but don't think I have enough room to put my feet down on the side! I would be afraid of tipping over to the side. What's the trick? Your lift looks the same as mine. Harbor Freight.
    Again great Video! Thank you for sharing and I'll be looking forward to more of them! Johnny San Jose, Ca

    • @EpicCowlick
      @EpicCowlick  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. The table is from Harbor Freight and gets a lot of use. Mostly for dirt bikes. I understand fear of rolling off the stand but it's very doable as you saw. My feet are actually on the edges of the table on the lip. Once you try it you'll find it's plenty stable assuming legs are long enough, lol.

    Great video! I was considering changing the tires on my '15 Sportster myself and I've looked at a lot of DIY tire-changing sites and videos. Your video inspired me to give it a shot. QUESTIONS: What kind of pipe did you use for the on-the-fly rim protectors. What size C-clamp? How tall are the jackstands? Thanks, Joel Zink

    • @EpicCowlick
      @EpicCowlick  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The vinyl hose is 1 inch outer diameter and fit perfectly over the tire iron. If you want to get it right just take your iron to Home Depot and test fit it in the hoses. Then you can be sure you'll get the right size. Turns out that is the most important tool for the job along with liberal soapy water on the tire and rim. With the vinyl host over the tire iron, you really don't need the 3/4 inch red Plex pipe that I used. The C clamp is large, I think it's 10 or 12 inch. Can't remember for sure. It just needs to be big enough to fit over the largest section of the rear tire. Jackstands? What jackstands?

How it has performed, what you have liked, what you have disliked, how the engine has been, any issues you have ran into, how your mods have held up, anything you wish you'd changed or added different from what you already did mod wise or spec wise on the current SD.
      It would be interesting to hear your insight after all the time you have owned it and used it and all the miles you have put on it how your experiences have been with it and your thoughts on the good and bad with it ( how could there be anything bad though, it's a SuperDuty...lol

    oh it pains me to see you remove the sprocket and rotors. get yourself an old empty 15 gallon drum. Its roughly the same diameter as a 5 gallon bucket but around waist high. cover the opening of the drum with a thick towel to protect your rim while the rotor is inside the drum opening. when you remove the old tire with your spoons it will fall to the ground with the drum inside it. this make changing tires at home much easier.

      If the wheels went in unscratched

      Turning any property over to others may or may not elevate risk of damage
      I get it
      They’re represented as professionals
      And novices can screw up finishes as well
      But without coming off as a complete ass with a tire shop -
      How would anyone have your perfect wheels confirmed with a service writer BEFORE the tires are switched out and balanced?
      Honestly, unless you can gain access to observe the entire tire process ... and balancing -
      Which routinely is not allowed-
