If I had a car, I would make all my grocery shoppings at Makro. But I never had a car in Thailand. Waiting for your “used car prices in Chiang Mai” video :)
I popped into Rimping in town this morning. It looks like the one you filmed yesterday. I hadn't realised there were several locally and usually use the one in Kad Farang. But good to know of an alternative. Great tip. Cheers!
Great video and very interesting to watch. When we, my Thai partner visit her family in Thailand, Kanchanaburi province we love to go to Makro in the city to stock up on food and other supplies. Thanks for this video showing various products and prices. I can hardly wait now for our next visit with family including driving out to Makro for those fun shops. Keep up the great work on your channel Jon and yes please do more of these types of videos. Cheers from a Farung from Vancouver, Canada 👍.
We moving up there soon, mainly to reducing our living costs that’s why we choose CM but as where we r living now we paying the same price cuz we all go to Makro now. How about some local market to support the farmers? Would be very interesting.🙏🏽
I was thinking the same thing. I enjoyed strolling through the local markets, never bought much because I only had a microwave to cook with....but next time, I'll be cooking more.
I took 2x 200g packets of cinnamon back to the U.K. from the Makro.. baguette in the back pocket on the bike too 👌. Half the price for fresh baguettes than any bakery I could find in the city.
I'm thinking the only things I'd buy in the supermarket are things that aren't available in the wet markets that I might need or want. A lot of savings that way it seems.
I appreciate these kinds of videos. It's good info. One item I'm curious about that never seems to get mentioned is chicken broth. It seems to be extremely uncommon there. I'm not so concerned with price as availability. It's a pretty significant staple in my cooking. A lot of things I make I can sub in local options easily, but chicken broth as an ingredient is kind of hard to replace.
I think you can get something like that but nothing I’ve bought before. You can get chicken seasoning and make broth with it but it’s probably not the same :)
Interestingly, I don't think those salami prices are out of line with the prices here in the US, assuming quality is decent. Selection seemed respectable for a non specialist store too. I guess they're no different than here, where the foreign food section has grown significantly over the years and prices have come down. As demand goes up it gets more cost effective to import, lowering prices, which then helps demand increase... The milk price is a bit high, but not crazy. You'll pay at least that here for regular organic milk or lactose free or anything like that. Regular 1/2 gallons of 2% are about $2, so almost 80TBT. I'm not sure when you were last in the west, but let's just say all our prices have been climbing rapidly on groceries, along with everything else.
No jalapenos?! I can't live without jalapenos.. Do they sell flour tortillas or corn tortillas there? Maybe next time you can do your grocery shopping and take us along to see what you buy and how much it cost you at the end of the video. 😊😊😊
Good quality fresh Arabica coffee beans around 500 THB for a kilo. Prices fluctuate depending on the quality. Not really sure about tea prices as I don’t often drink it.
@@AndiGomez-yu2dx you should get into it buddy, there is a correlation between tea drinkers and successful organ transplant patients and if tea can do that imagine the other benefits. thanks for the heads up re coffee, i'll be there in about 2 weeks
So much of the "cheap" pricing depends on where you are moving from. When Jon did Rimping he felt the price of cheese was high. However the cheese he showed was equivalent to HKD50. Here in HK that cheese would be HKD125. The same with wine. People say wine is expensive in Thailand, but we have found it only slightly higher than HK. As Jon always says "Depends on what you are looking for."
Really interesting, nice idea for a video. Keep up the good work.
Thanks mate :)
Cool video. Didn’t know Thailand had grocery stores the size of Costco 👍🏼. Thanks for the share !🎉
Thanks, yeah lot's a choices here!

Expat Auto
Haha yeah, that could be a good video idea :)
I was looking for frozen berries just earlier today. Good to know and good price too. Thanks Jon.

Yeah they have a great selection in Makro and the prices are spot on :)
@@jondcanton I confess that Rimping is still my favourite place to shop.
Loved this video! Want more
Thanks, I'll see what I can do :)
Thank you Jon. This is useful.
Thanks!

Yeah that's a good idea, I'll have a look for a good market to check out the prices :)
Have you tried Mueang Mai Market? I'm sure you have. Good prices there. Maybe a good place to make a video. My apologies if you already have. Cheers.
Yep it's a good market, I'll try make a video from there at some point :)

Wow, Jon, Macro is huge!
Did you ever check out the Royal shop (run by students) over in Chiang Mai University?
Never been there Jeremy, I'll have to check it out :)
Enjoying all you're videos keep it up
Thanks mate, appreciate that!

It's fantastic here. Move!
Yes, Jon is one of the best CM TH-camrs
Thanks, appreciate that :)

Yeah true I’ve not been back to the UK since 2015 so I keep comparing to those prices, I think I’d be in for a shock if I went back 😀
Is Makro mainly a wholesale shop, just the vegetables/fruit/meat etc can be purchased in small quantities?
south east asian version of costco
I'd say so yes, we have Makro in the UK as well. Certain items you'll have to buy a pack as opposed to just one.
The prices are something like in Ukraine. Most of the things but I buy things at the market and the prices are sometimes even cheaper
Ah cool, yeah I'll get to a market at some point and check out the prices there as well :)
Nice one jon what about the beer prices 😂
Ah yes forgot to include those :) About 600 and a bit for a 12 box of 600ml Leo :)
HP sauce is now over 200 baht!
Yep, certain things are not cheap!
Hi is it easy to find organic grown fruits and vegetables there in grocery shops or maybe in speciell shops ? Thank You
Vegetables and fruit are cheaper in non touristy local open markets.
How much for bottled water
Around 6 to 8 baht for a 500ml bottle

coffee and tea please with prices :))

I was extremely disappointed when you walked right past the king of berries, Watermelon!
