+Luke Did you notice that the band wasnt popular to begin with, ended up not being popular with John's social media campaign, and even in this final scene none of the bar patrons were even paying attention to the band? It was just a group of mentally unstable people whos only outlet was this band. Johns only problem was that he was in it for the fame and the rest of them (maybe unknowingly) were in it as some sort of group therapy.

@@King_Bruno_the_Questionable That's a nice little subtlety. Because it's totally in character for Frank to be distracted or to make an odd, aside of an observation like that. And it's also totally in character for Frank to want to avoid as potentially vulnerable a statement as telling the rest of the former bandmates that he loves them. And it's totally in character for Frank to channel it through an aside like that to say it whilst also avoiding saying it.
Frank's character arc always makes me cry. I know people who are gifted like him and are treated as the other and taken advantage of like him. Such a great character and such a great movie
Exactly. He could do what Jon could not. Whether singing about a tuft or a dive bar, he could make magic singing about his surroundings. Jon, he didn't have the magic. However, I thought the ending to be happy as he finally got his "magic" back and without the mask [though, I rather liked it]. His support group was back.
I don't think I realized how much I loved this movie until this final scene. I couldn't stop thinking about it, and I was singing this last song in my head for like 3 weeks.
This scene makes me cry, when it cuts to franks face and his tears and his awkward voice and everything, Michael fassbender should just go to the Emmys and take them, no one would dispute
Actually the more i watch this film the more i realize he's trying his best to tell his band that he truly feels about them without hiding behind his mask but begins it by talking about the building and how he love the wall until he finally looks at his band mates in their eyes and begins to say i love you all. there is seriously so much meaning to this scene and this song.
The thing about this song and scene is that it's they're both so meaningful and you grab out to interpret the lyrics but this is only because it's the last scene and so much has happened. But what if, the only thing important to interpret is "I love you all" which is simple to understand. And possibly because people constantly aim to interpret his lyrics. So he used that simply to make it stick out.
Fassbender does such an amazing job of playing a person with severe autism. It's believable, and it never feels like he's making fun of neurodivergent people. Absolutely amazing performance. This scene always makes me cry. I've seen this movie 6 or 7 times now, and this scene always gets me.
I don't think it was ever suggested that Frank was autistic. They said mental illness. He is not at all representative of severe autism. Most people with profound autism are completely non-verbal. My 10 year old daughter is a non-verbal child with autism. Frank functions on a MUCH higher level, in nearly every respect, than she & her peers. Autistic people also aren't placed in mental hospitals these days as Frank was. It was a brilliant movie & portrayal, just not of autism.
@@laurab1105 in an early draft of the script his father outright states he has an anxiety disorder. but i can absolutely see how someone with autism would relate to the character. I like that they left it vague in the movie, because it really doesn’t matter at the end of the day.
Also, where's Fassbender's Best Actor Oscar nomination? He was great in this movie. If you didn't know he was in this movie, you wouldn't even think it was him until the end.
MrBill0327 I hate this. I always see great movies like this but it would "seem weird" to have them Oscar nominated. :\ The academy needs to expand their movie tasteticles.
I think it's a gray area with a film like this. Fassbender is definitely the conceptual focus, but we explore his character through the peripheral viewpoint of Gleeson's character. So the protagonist is technically Gleeson, but the story is about Frank, but both characters go through their own arcs of equal importance. I think both actors probably could have submitted for Best Actor, as neither were really Featured or Supporting. Either way yeah Fassbender deserved accolades for his performance, especially considering how strong it was for not being able to see his face for the majority of the film.
That was exactly what it was like for me. Someone said I should watch Frank, and I did without looking anything about it up. The movie worked really well that way for me, kind of like a guessing game of what I thought Frank was going to look like without the mask, and I was really surprised that it was Fassbender.
I really connected with this movie. Having played in uncountable unsuccessful bands that meant the world to me over the years. The power of friends creating a shared experience that no one else cares about. This scene captures that feeling in a powerful way.
An incredibly touching final scene - the movie turned from comedy to tragedy so smoothly you hardly notice it happening, but to end it with this hopeful touch was beautiful. Fassbender is amazing.
as a musician, this scene hits super close to home. there's just something about playing music with your best friends. it doesn't matter if anyone else cares. it's just about being with people who love and support you.

I'm going to say this is one of Fassbender's top 3 acting performances. Watching his character first struggle for some sense of normalcy and eventually become empowered with each verse was amazing.
Such an incredible closing scene. This movie just does so much and I believe can help so many different people. It’s absolutely my favorite, to the point that I even have a Frank tattoo on my arm. Every once in a while someone in public will recognize it, and it makes me so happy every single time. 💜 Frank
This was the best way to end such a beautiful film. Frank's vocals and improvised lyrics bring so much feeling. Nana and Baraque finding the groove gives me chills and then the way Maggie started playing the absolute fuck outta that synth gives my chills, chills.

Perfect ending for a perfect movie. Not only is the song significant for the movie, but also as Frank coming back to his friends and rekindling his fire for music. So amazing
One of the most emotional endings to a movie I have ever seen and that is saying a LOT. I had the same reaction to this movie that film critics a generation before me had to like The 400 Blows and such. I love this movie.
Fassbender forever. A beautiful performance, what are we concerned about? I saw this in the cinema at the time, and left with tears in my eyes. The cast still requires some appreciation - give it some.
This scene made me cry the first time I saw it, and I tear up every time after. I hadn't really seen much of Fassbender's work except for X-Men and seeing this, I see he has some real acting chops! I was seriously impressed.
Perfect final scene, except for that last shot. They should have just cut to black after showing the empty bar stool. Still though, what an amazing film and an amazing song. The music... i don't know what about it, but it's amazing to me. His voice is bad, they're disjointed, etc, but it sounds amazing to me. Something so raw and emotional about the lyrics and the performance. Fassbender absolutely killed this role.
I thought maybe the reason why they cut to Jon walking away was that it showed he didn't belong in the band and he wasn't gonna be like Frank but Jon also wasn't going to let that fact destroy him like it did to the band manager. He's just walking away rather than sitting and watching what could have been.
Fader33 Yeah I agree that's what they're going for. But I think that message would have been stronger if they didn't show him at all -- they just show the bar stool he used to occupy, completely empty. He's gone, without a trace, and life moves on without him. He cuts all ties, and the screen goes black.
I think that the fact that he left on his own is actually a great ending - he accepted both his and their fate never to be famous but to be happy and with a peaceful minds. Also it is curious how much his role corresponds with the role audience has in production of any movie - we all want to live and be great, we put money to them to be part of it and get closer to the experience and then we just walk away and nobody knows what we will do next with what we've been through. Besides the ending may also correspond with Jon Ronson's experience of letting go of Frank Sidebottom, who died before Jon managed to help him.
Alice Berkes I think it's a great ending too, I'm just commenting on the final shot. I think the image of the empty bar stool would have been a more interesting and powerful way to show the fact that he left on his own, and that he doesn't belong.
I don't know about anyone else but the moment that really starts off my goosebumps is when Clara starts goes to her instrument. Her need to get to it to express her love for Frank (and the band) is so overwhelming she almost knocks over the mic stand. It's almost like she's drunk. She literally turns her back on him and yet the love is so palpable. It's in her performance as much as the music. Fuck, Maggie Gyllenhaal is one of my favourite actors.
You don't even realize of how this scene touched you until years later, one idle night just before going to sleep, your mind recall the melody of the chorus, so you look for the song in youtube and voilá!...you start crying .......so many things have happened in 6 years (maybe living in our own "paper maché head").....this song is pure catarsis.....sorry for my english and I wish to all of you nothing but the best in this weird times... (I love you all!)...
Truly an underrated gem of a movie. Never knew that Fassbender himself was a musician and massive music nerd, explains why he took to this role like a natural.
Such an amazing scene. I have watched it over and over again. The scene works on many levels. It’s a perfect ending. Anybody who has ever been in a band will love this scene. I really respect Jon for reuniting the group with it’s singer and realizing he is no longer a part of it and that the core of the group was those four members creating music together. And I can’t get that dang song out of my head!!
i love when people say things out loud and clearly. even when he cant look at them he still kept singing and found the courage and he really sang the song very clear and honest. i love this
Wow!!! what a long time without comments. I've played music for the last 30 years every kind of venue you can think and came close to some regional notoriety. This movie moved me on so many levels, starting in garages, and spare bedrooms to being able to rent studios for various bands the point is when you find a few fellow musicians and you are all on the same page it becomes spiritual and transcends the boundaries of ordinary even if it's only thru your eyes, and ears and those friends that are on that journey with you, nothing compares! I love this movie and the ending always makes me cry which I love it makes me feel alive!!!!
Michael Fassbender is a brilliant actor, also a good singer. I love this movie and it's now one of my favourite movies ever. There are so many emotions you get while watching this movie. You laugh, you cry and you're simply confused. It's fascinating to see how Jon's egoistical desire for the band to be famous, and therefore himself, is tearing the group members apart. For me, the movie is about doing whatever it is you're doing for yourself. Find joy in it, put in passion and don't care what other people think or better said only those people that are important to you.
Frank is like the Idiot in a Dostoyevsky sense. He is a savant, but not merely a savant. He's a "Beautiful Man" - delicate in a way stained glass is delicate, more permanent than the brutal bricks and their mere utility. Frank is a man "set apart" , or "sacer" in Latin, the etymology of the term "sacred". Set apart, he is a sacred man, a type of Christ. And what is this scene if not a Resurrection of what the band had before their "Fall" with meeting Jon? Jon recognized what he did and corrected it by removing himself. It's honestly a very happy finale.
This movie was a superb treat and a wonderful surprise. Definitely a grower, not a shower. The more time passes since seeing it, the more I'm enraptured with it.
I've got a new found love for Michael Fassbender. Amazing. Ian Curtis type vocals on this tune and sounds like Jim Morrison on other! Amazing talent. This tunes been stuck in my head for weeks now.
i love your wall. if you are not moved by this scene you are not worth a dime. (you do have to watch the movie to understand the context of its impact.) this may be the most enjoyable climactic ending to a movie ive ever watched. I cant stop watching the ending. I am so happy for this fictional band. I believe m.g. and m.f. should win awards for this. i love you all.
Just watched this for the 1st time two nights ago. Then again last night. Halfway through again today. I'm in my late 40s and it's impossible to articulate how close this is to how I see/feel music. One of the most brilliant movies on bands, the musical process, and the realistic paradox of mental illness and genius. I almost never make an online statement but this movie was so incredible I can't shut up about. GET OUT OF THE PATH OF THE KING!
I don't know how but this song makes me both haoppy and sad at the same time. The sadness is obvious but the happiness is noteworthy, Maggi's keyboard blows my mind every single time. The whole film's about family and Outsiders. Some people form families through unconventional means and through everthing that happens in this film these people support each other in a way that could never be verbalised, John realises here that he's holding this disfunctional little family back and it's one of the most beautiful moments in cinema. What a film.
I love how they reunited, all sad emotions and shit, and in the end they're all playing together and Frank starts dancing and even scream, while the scene cuts to Jon to tell us that his absence makes the band back to what it was, plays their hearts out with their bizarre songs.
Nearly a year ago as I watched this film - at this very scene - I received a call that my mother had just died. This song outlines the memories I have of my mother's last day on earth.
Why did I wait so long to watch this!!!!!???? What a fucking awesome movie!!!! so original and creative, even had me tearing up with the final scene!!! fucking beautiful, and made me realize I need music, not to make life better but to make life what it is... Thanks Frank!!
I've just watched this movie (thought it was about Frank Sidebottom, the original). This was a really, really good film and I loved the music. This track when it originates at the end and the version with the titles.....Fassbinder has some skills.
what an amazing movie and song. Both brilliant on so many levels. The movie is like a cycle. Ending as it begun except 2 differences. Frank realizes that the head was hindering him and he realized he was still great without it and he loved the band not the "wall" of his head. Second difference is that Jon, who as Deri C greatly pointed out, realizes he doesn't belong, is no longer writing songs in his head. Wonderful movie...think I'm going to go watch it again.
One of the best closing scenes ive ever seen

Could not agree more.
Alice Berkes
I think it's a great ending too, I'm just commenting on the final shot.
I SO felt her in this scene...she's a goddess.
Maggie Gyllenhall is incredible in Secretary too
Mr. Fassbender.... Awesome actor!!
This is one of the best ending scenes I've seen in the last years. Simply stunning.
I'm a jaded, worthless old man. Hardened. But, man...I teared up a bit...
A bit?
No one is worthless, your comment brings context and purpose to many im certain of it because it has for me.
Apologizing and showing love the best way he knows how to, with music. Beautiful ending.
(I love you all!)...
the guitarist's facial expressions towards Frank are priceless. Excitedly shocked to see Frank back in action. Great movie. Great music.
Fassbender is such a fine actor...I've gotta see Slow West, that's supposed to be great!
It was great!
Oh you have to! It's amazing!
Just watched this for the first time.. what a treat that was.
This is the most likable song ever
My second best ending to a movie about musicians; whiplash number one.
omfg.. when Clara finally decides to turn that MS-10 on.. 02:42
he"l yea
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 going in wasn't she
She's jammin her ass off on that thing
I so wished there would have been more of that MS-10!
The last 8 bars are god
Michael Fassbender is goals. Amazing movie.
Truly an underrated gem of a movie. Never knew that Fassbender himself was a musician and massive music nerd, explains why he took to this role like a natural.
The first time I saw this movie I felt like I was apart of it it moved me in such a cool way
Such an amazing scene.
It's just so sweet. Almost cried. What an actor Michael fassbender is.
something so fascinating about this movie
I want this exact version of the song played at my funeral
Just seen this movie today and fell in love with it
i love when people say things out loud and clearly. even when he cant look at them he still kept singing and found the courage and he really sang the song very clear and honest. i love this
fassbender is amazing even his body language facial expressions everything about this is so raw i love it
Wow!!! what a long time without comments. I've played music for the last 30 years every kind of venue you can think and came close to some regional notoriety.
This movie moved me on so many levels, starting in garages, and spare bedrooms to being able to rent studios for various bands the point is when you find a few
fellow musicians and you are all on the same page it becomes spiritual and transcends the boundaries of ordinary even if it's only thru your eyes, and ears and those
friends that are on that journey with you, nothing compares! I love this movie and the ending always makes me cry which I love it makes me feel alive!!!!
This scene made the whole movie.
And the whole movie is pretty damn amazing but this scene...next f**king level.
michael fassbender can do anything really
What a magnificent voice Micheal has.. could easily have been a singer.
This movie was a superb treat and a wonderful surprise. Definitely a grower, not a shower. The more time passes since seeing it, the more I'm enraptured with it.
showed my wife this the other night. still love it!
I've got a new found love for Michael Fassbender. Amazing. Ian Curtis type vocals on this tune and sounds like Jim Morrison on other! Amazing talent. This tunes been stuck in my head for weeks now.
Best song that doesn’t actually exist in our realm.
i love your wall. if you are not moved by this scene you are not worth a dime. (you do have to watch the movie to understand the context of its impact.) this may be the most enjoyable climactic ending to a movie ive ever watched. I cant stop watching the ending. I am so happy for this fictional band. I believe m.g. and m.f. should win awards for this. i love you all.
What a beautiful song ❤
this still gets me. beautiful scene.
Such a perfect ending as John walks away to leave the band as he found them, to continue in their undiscovered brilliance.
I love this movie 🍿
Brings me to tears every time.
man i love you all, the people who made this piece and the actors, love you
I don't know how but this song makes me both haoppy and sad at the same time. What a film.
one of the best movie i've ever seen. underrated movie and song
i love the actual movie version of this song so much better than the cleaned up version on yt. thanks for posting it.
I teared up but as usual couldn't cry.
I love how they reunited, all sad emotions and shit, and in the end they're all playing together and Frank starts dancing and even scream, while the scene cuts to Jon to tell us that his absence makes the band back to what it was, plays their hearts out with their bizarre songs.
I love the cutaway to the drummer at about the 39 second mark, right after Frank says put your arms around me.
Best love song ever
One of my favorite movies and favorite scenes!
Nearly a year ago as I watched this film - at this very scene - I received a call that my mother had just died. This song outlines the memories I have of my mother's last day on earth.
Damn... sorry.. for your miss
If you have been in a band or just have a heart, you know how beautiful this is x
Just saw this for the first time tonight. I think this song is going to be stuck in my head for the rest of the year. Beautiful movie.
So brilliant how he naturally transforms a regular conversation into song lyrics. I love your wall...
Why did I wait so long to watch this!!!!!????
What a fucking awesome movie!!!! so original and creative, even had me tearing up with the final scene!!! fucking beautiful, and made me realize I need music, not to make life better but to make life what it is... Thanks Frank!!
thanks for the upload. such a powerful ending.
I've just watched this movie (thought it was about Frank Sidebottom, the
original). This was a really, really good film and I loved the music.
This track when it originates at the end and the version with the
titles.....Fassbinder has some skills.
The marks on his face from where he was wearing the head is a nice detail
I cried at the end of this movie. This scene and when Jon meets him at his house.
An amazing film, super performances all round
This movie is so unappreciated
what an amazing movie and song.
I love your wall. I love you all. Beautiful
this scene had be bawling.
