    What's really funny about Fight Club is that Edward Norton's character has no real name in the credits. It just says "Narrator"

    In my headcanon, the "Tyler" on the airport moving sidewalk was a real guy not related to the story, his appearance just stuck with the narrator to create Tyler Durden. He's going the other way along the concourse and yet ends up on the same plane?

    • @ashakydd1
      @ashakydd1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +216

      That would actually make a lot of sense, kind of like how your brain builds locations in dreams for real places you've been. 'Jack' probably looked at him for a moment, mentally commented on him, and then forgot about him entirely; not even realizing what he'd set in motion for himself.

    Actually he shot himself in the face to take control of his own life, not to run from pain but to embrace it as part of being alive. When Tyler burned his hand he tried to close his eyes, meditate his way out of the pain wich makes Tyler mad because he was "wasting the best moment of his life", that's why right before he shoots himself he says to Tyler "My eyes are open"

      I was expecting to really hate this but i agree 100% with all their minor criticisms of the movie. It's kind of a rorshach test in that you could take almost anything away from it. In the end the narrator realizes that Tyler Durden isn't who he wants to be. You could give weight to that or not.

  • @Razovllay
    @Razovllay 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3261

    The purpose of the movie wasn't to criticise capitalism. It was predominately a commentary on masculinity in the late 20th century. The men in the film felt trapped within monotonous, unfulfilling lives, and so decided to take their frustrations out against the system. Personally, I don't interpret it as a film that advocates anarchism, instead I see it as a portrayal of men who are desperately seeking a sense of purpose in life, a higher mission.

    • @scaper8
      @scaper8 8 ปีที่แล้ว +278

      Exactly, a very big part of the point was that Tyler was wrong and hypocritical.
      But just like a good cult leader, there's just enough truth in what he says that you find yourself listening. That's a big part of the reason people still find the movie and it's message interesting; even now, when the world is very different, there are truths to be found in Tyler's message.
      I'd almost say that the central theme is "Don't put too much stock in what anyone says, listen to everyone and pick your own ideas."

    • @Razovllay
      @Razovllay 8 ปีที่แล้ว +170

      scaper8 Tyler's hypocrisy certainly comes from the Narrator's conflicting ideas over what he deems to be the perfect man. He wants to be completely opposed to the norms of society. Free of from rules, capitalism, consumerism, work, etc. While simultaneously wishing to reflect societies ideals in terms of physical appearance, an attractive face, a good hairstyle, trendy clothing, and a muscular physique. He has numerous avenues of income that are generated via work and capitalist ventures. And importantly, his organisation is heavily based around strict rules.
      This is clearly deliberate. At no point does Tyler suggest that he has fully realized his philosophy. He always makes it clear that he's trying to hit bottom, achieving it is an ongoing process. He's on a journey, and he wishes to take everyone else on that journey with him.

    • @allendrake6960
      @allendrake6960 8 ปีที่แล้ว +93

      I agree with you, and might add that it's also making a commentary criticizing self-righteous anarchistic ideals that obviously lead to the same results of mindless, monotonous lives via following some leader who spits out anti-establishment garbage made to sound clever and "deep". People who attack the movie for in their eyes putting forth some kind of "romanticism of anarchy that is hypocritical" seem to not take the next step in recognizing that the director, screenwriters, actors, etc. are THOROUGHLY AWARE of the hypocrisy, and that the point of the movie is to showcase that hypocrisy.

      The actual point of the book is : don't let you control by consumerism, but be careful, because the path to liberty could bring you to an over dystopia if you chose to follow new leaders, true emancipation is thinking by yourself.
      Tyler is a anarchist leader, do you see the scam ?
      He got credits because he is fighting against a rotten system, but it never answer if his ideals are good or not, it just says his methods and motivations are bad for sure, that's the reason of the open end.
      Tyler being a horrible person is not the point of the book, it's just an archetype planted to make a point.

    for the billionth time: the reason shooting himself made Tyler go away is that the narrator genuinely thought he would kill himself by doing that, and his real mental willingness to die to get rid of Tyler proved he didn't need Tyler anymore. so when he proved that to himself mentally it made the physical manifestation of Tyler go away too.

    Alright guys, i'm just letting you know that fight club isn't actually a movie that's about anti-capitalism. It's about people who aimlessly follow someone in order to have a better life. Tyler used their need of becoming a hero instead of being random guys in the system to forge his chaotic sense of order. With Tyler's charm they were so eagerly following him and becoming his personal slaves without even questioning what the hell are they're doing. Basic human nature actually.
    It's not an irony of the movie folks, it's what the movie is about. And it's still one of the best movies i've ever watched.

      Yeah and besides, the movie doesn't show anarchy or relentless anti-capitalism is actually a cure for modern people's crisis. It actually tells that no matter how you live, if you don't have any sense of measure, you'll become some sort of mindless little minion of an ideology. It can be capitalism, religion, anarchy or whatsoever.

    The message of a movie isn't important. You think a movie is going to change your life but the next day you already forgot about it. What's important is that you enjoyed experiencing the movie. Stop looking for a message and start enjoying yourself.

    fight club is my favorite movie of all time(so far), and im wondering what I have in common with people who feel the same way about this movie
    do you feel most people lead meaningless lives? perhaps including your selves?
    do you hate the monetary system?
    is depression something in the past or present you've fought with?
    do you struggle to think of brands that your loyal to?
    just curious
