So, fun fact about gaming: It took us a while to come up with "first person shooter". Before the proper terminology was crafted, "Doom Clone" was the genre. In essence, "Souls like" is effectively the new memetic iteration of "Doom Clone".
Yeah that's true, and I'm sure that we will see the term "souls-like" evolve over the next couple of years. Damn us humans for wanting to categorize everything lol
I feel like unlike FPS games it's harder to generalize what Souls-likes are supposed to be enough. I mean when you pin it down the only common characteristic is having a second and only chance to collect currency on the place you died after death. But even something like Remnant of the Ashes or Sekiro goes away with that. And for many people the style of combat, atmosphere and storytelling is just as important. In contract with FPS games the categorization is really obvious. It's a first-person game where you shoot, that's it. Terms like Metroidvania and Rogue-likes haven't gotten away and I don't feel like this one is gonna.
The reason i love soulsborne is Dark fantasy set in european style setting Berserk Pandora hearts Vanitas no carte Black butler Claymore Ragna crimson Attack on titan Fullmetal alchemist Goblin slayer Hellsing DrCl midnight children
I've heard of this anime back when AMVs were still a very common thing on TH-cam 😂 i'm legitimately annoyed that i never got around to watching this series because it sounds like its completely up my alley
This anime is awesome. Very unique, imagine a world populated mostly by sentient machines and now due to certain events, the concept of inevitable death and timely degradation is now a reality. The world's setting and art is as Dark Souls as it gets.
Never thought to connect the titles. But Casshern Sins was always among my favorite anime and Fromsoft's works have been among my favorite games. But when I see the title and image it immediately makes sense for me. Hope some people well check out this underrated masterpiece of animation after your video. Leda is best girl btw. P.S. Don't know how much into reading you are. But if you ever wanted a "Souls-like book" I'd look into Book of the New Sun. It's also a series about a desolate, dying world and it has a puzzle-like narrative which forces you to piece together small pieces of information yourself to get a larger picture of the nature of the world. The setting in fact is a bit of a combination of Casshern and Dark Souls. It's set in the far future where the sun is dying and relics of human's past advanced technologies are everywhere but society is more like that of a medieval fantasy world. In fact even now I see that if you type in "Book of the New Sun Dark Souls" I wasn't the only one to see the similarities between these series.
You may not believe me, but the second you showed the first frame of the anime, you had already convinced me. I watched the first episode of this anime, and hearing it called a souls-like makes complete sense to me.
@@upper_case_T You might have misunderstood me: I had already watched the first episode years ago, and that memory surfaced and made me think, "yeah, I'd buy that it's a Souls-like" after you showed it.
Not even a mention to Angels Egg.... the anime that literally influenced the storytelling music and aesthetic of Dark Souls despite hardly anyone knowing about it?
Angels Egg has already been covered by some on yt, specifically Vaati. So I just didn't really feel like it was necessary to mention here and just focused on the show I mainly wanted to talk about
This show is so underrated btw did u get copyright for using the anime music? Was going to delve into the series myself one day and wanted to know awsome video btw subbed
The soundtrack was fine for the most part, most of my issues came from using the original audio + the visuals. I originally wanted to show more parts of dialogue but I had to cut that. And also try to use clips that are no longer than like 9 seconds!
Keeping your underwear on is the souls-like of pooping

My only issue with it is that it's gonna be like "metroidvania" in that souls like will be a permanent genre name
@@upper_case_TI mean it defines our thinking haha. We perpetually look for patterns and enjoy finding them

@@upper_case_Taoi Hana is a very underrated anime song wish a lot of people would talk about it but they opening is definitely catchy

Love Cass, seen the anime when i was little, Plus him being playable in capcom vs tasunoko was a great fighting game. I may have spelled it wrong.

@@upper_case_T damn noted I gotcha thanks for the tip
I so highly appreciate your take on soulslikes, the term has become so highly deluded that only a select few games hold that title for me.
Berserk
That hair tho
casshern sins is the worst thing to have the casshern name. this anime is a complete mess of nothing but fake depth
Cope and seethe
Damn this got me genuinely interested in the Anime, guess my watchlist will keep on growing with no hope of ever stopping
We all know the pain... But you aren't going to be bored for the forseeable future at least lol
It should be illegal to describe things as "souls-like." I'm so fucking tired of reading and hearing this buzzword babble EVERYWHERE.
this truly is the souls-like of youtube comments
