Hi Paul, search the internet for Scotty's Music in St. Louis, MO. They still have and sell Jerry Byrd's entire instructional course, including all of his personal transcriptions of hundreds of songs. The Jerry Byrd Instructional Method, and the many transcriptions cover MANY different tunings. So you can start there. Enjoy!
I’ve known Chris for over 20 years from working at a guitar shop on Broadway in Nashville. Scruggs knows as much as anyone does about the history of country music and Nashville music and the same about the instruments and people that made it..he’s wise beyond his years and he’s unassuming and pleasant to listen to when he talks about it..and his playing is just as rich and deep. Chris is a gem of a human.
i love the head shake from Russ when Chris starts tellin' how things were played, who played them, what year they did it, who else was in the room and what colour their shirts were and where they played the day b4 and if they were still warin' that shirt!!! lolol!!! ;) M
I never expected him to bring up Kayton Roberts considering how everyone seems to have forgotten the master. You always hear about Byrd, Helms, Remington etc. but barely anyone brings up amazing and innovative players like Kayton Roberts, Jim Murphy and Reece Anderson. I have always considered Chris (and Andy Gibson back in the 2000s) as a follower of Kayton's style - especially considering how his whole setup is exactly the same as Kayton's. Kayton and Jim changed my life and I never hesitate to bring it up. Helms was the first one I ever heard, but hearing Jim play made me a steel player. Never forget about your heroes!
Thank you for this. Chris is a national treasure. There's really no expressing how much I wish I could be a fly on the wall of the Fabulous Superlatives tour bus.
Chris is a font of knowledge and a hell of a nice guy. Had the pleasure of seeing him play with his band a couple times. Great when amazingly talented people are also amazing people
I went to a honkey tonk, couldn’t find much good much, then found the old timers with Chris playing, and it changed my life. He’s truly stunning on his instrument. So much history in his musical mind.
Master class. Been playing pedal steel since the early 1980s. It's really interesting to hear some of this history from the 40s,50s and 60s that got us to where we're at today!
Really enjoyed the interview with Chris. He has been fortunate to be mentored by the cream of the crop of non pedal steel guitar players. I heard him in Springfield, MO on pedal steel. He did a great job. Don Helms and I were friends and Chris is definitely in his class. He has a great future ahead.
I've been out of the loop for quite some time. Serious health issues hit and I had to sell my LeGrande 2, amps, bunch of other guitars and amps. Watching this really makes me miss playin' psg...
The history and knowledge Chis has about Nashville, Country Music, players, instruments, theory, technique, you would think he's a hundred years old and not a 30 something kid. Unbelievable. I could listen to him prattle on for days.
Wow, enjoyed every minute of it. I started playing non pedal steel about 2 years ago, but damn, it's hard. Living in switzerland, you basically have zero teachers and zero influence whatsoever. I really should get back into it, I just love it.
This is a very good video. Chris Scruggs know an awful lot about steel guitars and country music. And Russ Pahl is a good interviewer who let his guest speak, instead of speaking about himself.
I asked Bill Dearmore (Gene Watson Steel Man)to play Farewell party on my Mullen one day at a lesson and he reached up and pulled the 1st string with his finger.Id never seen that before. His Zum prob had that pull on it.
Chris Scruggs should do a lap steel method course. There is very few resources for lap steel beyond 6 string c6.

I started on Hawaiian guitar, but switched to guitar because of lack of educational material.

Chris Scruggs always educates me - wish I could study with him
Thank you Steel Guitar Arts Council, this is great. Please continue documenting this important info for the steel.

I play guitar- not steel, but man, I found this fascinating. So cool to witness some masters diving into the craft. Thank you for this!
Is there any instrument Chris hasn't mastered? His knowledge of the history of the instruments and country in general is incredible.
Wow what a fantastic interview! This is great and so inspiring and informative! Thanks so much to both of you!!!
Wow! Totally amazing information.
Great interview and Chris is one of my favorites.

Man.I wish I had tracked Chris down when I moved to town in 97-99.He and I share a lot of the same personalities.
This is so wonderful. What a wealth of knowledge !
I loved this! Chris is the reason I picked up the steel

This is incredible oh my gosh. Thank yall so much for putting this out for the world to hear.
Love this content, please keep it coming, if possible! Thank You 🙏
Mr. Scruggs seems to be an encyclopedia of steel guitar. Knowledge with chops...wow!
chris is an encyclopedia of knowledge
Great video I love learning I hope to be a good church player ❤
I saw Chirs with Marty's band. He's incredible.
Did he play Wipe Out on the stand-up bass?!
Chris Scruggs is a generational gem
Kayton changed my life. Made me realize how cool country could be.
so awesome
